Don't forget that this is a live performance. No studio help. No special effects. Just 3 guys making great rock music. A lot of sound for a 3 piece band.

Possibly the best live performance ever posted on the You Tube channel! And by a 3 man band all in their late teens and early twenties...just incredible!

Grand Funk Railroad is a great American rock band who achieved their peak in popularity during the 1970's. "I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)" is one of my favorites. But they had a lot of great hits such as "We're An American Band", "The Loco-Motion", "Walk Like A Man", "Shinin' On", "Some Kind Of Wonderful", "Bad Time" etc.

It was a harmonica or also known as a "mouth organ" that he was playing.

This actual performance was only seen live by a few people in a studio audience in Pennsylvania for a local TV show. That's the reason there's only a smattering of applause at the songs end.

I am a product of the "greatest music generation" these guys truly made their music. LIVE, no lip sync, no synthetics. It was a great time to be young! Thanks for reviewing and do more of this for you ! You will not be disappointed

This performance was recorded in Hershey, PA at the Hershey Community Center by WITF-TV channel 33 (PBS station) in 1969 for their show titled "The Show". There were only a few handfuls of people watching it live.

Your reaction validates my first experience seeing Grand Funk
I was 17 yrs old tripping on LSD at Crosley Field Cincinnati Ohio
    1971
The energy of Mark Farner was infectious
I was inside looking out for sure

My all time favorite band from the 1970’s. I was so in love with Mark Farner, the lead singer. My mom bought front row tickets for my best friend and me to see them in person for my 18th birthday. Unfortunately, we didn’t get go because my friend’s grandfather had a heart attack and died. She was suppose to drive us and I couldn’t go by myself. Never got another chance to see them in person.

That's a great find. One of my favorite bands from the '70s. I used listen to this song over and over practicing from the sound on my drum kit.
Wish they would've stayed together longer.
They made some great music together.

This is what we used to call heavy rock, Grand Funk Railroad were amazing musicians all 3 of them, maybe you could play and react to another of their several hits although for some reason this wasn't much of a hit, but it was for me and for many of my growing up friends "Heart Breaker" one of my favorites and the favorite of my dear friend who sadly past away 3 years ago, we were both 16 when that song was out.

On fire is not even close, this was a sun going super nova! Unreal performance, we saw them back in the day, it was like that for 2 hours, all 3 were totally on. Great American Band, they will always be heard, they have a bunch of great songs, try Heartbreaker Live by them, another roof raiser for sure! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎶

A bit of historic trivia. Only 2 bands sold out Shea Stadium. The first was The Beatles, and it took them 5 weeks to sell out. Then Grand Funk Railroad was scheduled there and sold out... in 3 DAYS!! They were truly America's band! The drummer and bass player tricked Mark, lead singer and main songwriter out of his share of the band and are now playing casinos in Michigan. Mark still performs on his own. It's not GFR without Mark Farner!

Dagmar S. listed a bunch of good ones as usual. I got to 2nd all of them but I don't know the 1st one. I vote for Footstompin' music. The band had a 2 year legal fight with their manager who won the copyrights and publisher's royalties to every Grand Funk recording made from March 1969 through March 1972, not to mention a large payoff in cash and oil wells
