something ive always found weird in this episode is that the character hedwig is transgender or at least has a complicated gender identity, and in riverdale they equate that to basically being a drag queen

Hedwig is... Complicated. She's kinda meant to be a deconstruction of gender and her male and female self are seen as two separate sides of her that must come together for her to find happiness. Its basically a statement that masculine and feminine are two parts of a person and should not be in conflict. Hedwig has been played by anyone of any gender, including cisgender women, in various adaptations of the stage play. So yeah gender with hedwig is complicated. I have not seen Riverdale but it looks like all that complexity went right out the window.

And the episode was supposed to be about him, but he only sang ONE song by himself, and the rest were all sung by Cheryl and Toni and the main four. Not even the episode about him focused on him.
And they sang the songs in inappropriate contexts. “Sugar Daddy” is not a song that a teenage girl should be singing to her principal, and “I’m All Sewn Up” is about not being happy with one’s gender reassignment surgery, yet Betty and Jug sang it while they argued. This show is honestly so desperate for attention, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next plot twist was this: “Archie is Jughead’s biological father!”
