  • During the medieval period, Beverley was famous for being a sanctuary town. Many criminals, usually murderers, were able to seek legitimate refuge from the law by escaping to Beverley Minster and reaching the Frid Stool within. Once they made it here they were safe.
The Frid Stool or 'Sanctuary' stool dates back as far as Saxon times, and this video from 1937, made by Ernest Symmons of the Beverley Picture Playhouse offers a slightly tongue-in-cheek reconstruction of a criminal's efforts from the law and find sanctuary at Beverley Minster in medieval times.
