  • Isaiah’s vivid description of life in rejection of the light of God’s Word paints a similar picture: “And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness,” (Isaiah 8:22, ESV). In fact, he reminds us in Isaiah 8:20 that the gloom is “because they have no dawn!” A frightening image - life without God is an unending night.
In chapter 9, Isaiah points to the only solution to human darkness, the great light of our Savior, the child born to the Virgin Mary, the eternal Son sent by God the Father. The mystery of the incarnation provides the foundation
for a salvation that not only redeems sinners but glorifies God. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” (Isaiah 9:6, ESV).
