I feel like this video reinforces a lot of negative stereotypes about the Montessori method. A classroom isn't "all mixed up", the kids stay in the same class for three years, where the older kids mentor the younger ones, which teaches them a lot of very important social skills. Secondly, very young children have a hard time distinguishing between fantasy and reality, so fantasy is usually introduced after the age of six. There have also been scientific studies that children often feel betrayed and lied to when they find out that so many things they were taught are simply not true. It can also teach your child that lying is okay because you've kinda lied to them for years. Besides that, open ended play is very much encouraged, dolls, stuffed animals, train tracks, building blocks...... It's just that the child always has the option to choose something else as well. Children are born with an innate curiosity and need to learn and teach themselves. They will choose activities with a different learning value at some point, even if it takes more than a day of playing with the same thing over and over again. Especially for kids that have a different intellectual level than the average child (higher or lower) Montessori can be an amazing experience because they can learn everything at their own pace. You said that children can choose their own activities, which is true, but there is a limit. First of all, there's lesson introductions, where you show your child what the intended use of the activity is and go through the motions with them. Then, if you notice that they are not at all interested in said activity, you set out another activity on their shelf that teaches similar principles e.g. a different counting toy, until you find something your child is comfortable with and enjoys doing. My personal reason for not choosing a Waldorf education is the fact that our family has a long history of being bored in school and our natural learning process being inhibited by long lessons about things we had already mastered. I've come to the conclusion that my children would probably be quite bored in a Waldorf classroom, although I do use some Waldorf principles at home with my children as well, because it just ended up working for my family and my children. For example, I don't call playing work, because I've never really understood the reasoning behind that, and we do fictional stories and often use our imagination. Different to the Waldorf principle, I have conversations with my kids afterwards about what was real and what was not. We make a clear distinction between fantasy and reality, in order to not confuse the children. Another important Montessori principle is to always give the child an answer to whatever question they have. They must feel respected, loved, valued and understood in the family/classroom, so whatever question they have will be answered correctly. The Montessori method uses positive discipline, just like the Waldorf method (I think), so the biggest difference is really just fantasy and the classroom settings, where children in a Montessori classroom generally get to choose their own activities and rarely have to sit in a circle while the teacher talks about something. The kids are taught individually or in small groups and activities like being read to that require a grown - up are usually done at home with the parents, although there are definitely exceptions. In my personal opinion, each family has to choose their own mix and match that works for them. Fully Waldorf is probably not ideal for your child's development and neither is 100% Montessori. Sorry for the long comment, I was kinda annoyed at first but then that faded and I probably explained some stuff twice.....
I believe that there can be a peaceful/exciting combination of Waldorf and Montessori, using the Montessori teaching method and using Waldorf materials for lessons. It would be so great!
I visited a public montessori school and i believe, and please correct me if i’m wrong, but a class has 3 grades. What’s interesting is that the older grades who have “mastered” the skills then tutor the ones who need help. It is almost like a little workplace

Yes. You are correct. Each class is called a cycle. And there is generally a three year age gap between the childern. This starts from early education and it allows childern to learn at their own pace with no pressure of being at the standard of the peers. And yes, if a child has mastered the task, they can help those who haven't yet.
@@deeplydeepali I also like that part of it too. The system as a whole has alot of pros and cons. I think the pros out weighs the cons in theory. But unfortunately from my experience that completely comes as a relief worker in a toodler community located within a school, I found in the actual setting the cons are greater in the pros. However. I feel like the building I was working in was poorly designed, that played a huge role in my cons. And the staff all had different levels of strictness when it came to the Montessori rules
@@deeplydeepali Yes, but sadly it doesn't always work out for everyone. My parents took my sister from the Montessori school after she was not able to read and write with the age of 10.
There are no Montessori school in Finland, so the only decision is between the "normal school" and Waldorf. Interesting is that they have become closer to each other since I went to school, many things from Waldorf are common practises now in "normal schools", for example starting to learn foreign language in first grade or all of the students having same subjects (not like wood work for boys and knitting for girls like it was twenty years ago).
Thanks for the video! I have a question; Is it correct that at Waldorf children are not learning how to read and write until the age of 7? And is it also true that from the age of 7 they are not only learning to read and write their native language but also two foreign languages? Thanks again!
