    Gene,
Thanks for your inspiration and all you have done for the community. This video is a perfect example of your generosity. I found you through Doug, and agree, he is a great resource. For those looking, he has changed his channel name from Doug Outside to Doug Linker.
Doug inspired me to try my hand at carving a year ago while at Boy Scout camp with my son. The factory edge on my Swiss Army knife helped me find my first figure inside a piece of trailside deadfall, and while a bit of a struggle, I was quite pleased with the results. Since then we have picked up a couple of true carving knives, made a strop, and are headed back to camp next week.
Before then though, we've got a few more hours of carving videos to watch!
    ~ Thayer

Hi Gene, Thanks for sharing your talent. I learned how to carve when I was 9 years old (I’m 64 now) from my uncle who got TB early in his life. He moved from Michigan down to Arizona where the weather was much better for his condition. To supplement his income, he used to carve nature scenes on gun stocks for people. He became very popular. He too shared his talent with me. I recently retired, I picked up my knifes and rediscovered my love for wood carving. I’ve also been watching you and other carvers on RUclips. I wish you and your family luck with all your recent struggles. Take care!

I am older - 80+ and did lots of early camping and Civil War re-enacting for 12+ years. I am sure I will continue watching many of your videos and will be trying some of my own carvings during the coming years. I have always carried a knife and whittled a bit but never did any carving.. but love to watch it being done. ..so thanks, and more later.. Thanks, prayers, and I saw and heard all of this one.

Gene, Could you provide a link for where to purchase the basswood blocks that you use?
The ones which I buy locally at hobby shops seem to be of very poor quality in that they splinter easily and seem to have very hard areas.
Also, can you repeat your preference for southern vs northern basswood and why?

Gene: First off...let me just say a few things from the heart. I came across your channel from Doug Outside and he often speaks how he learned from you and your videos were so great. But after watching you and now this video...you are an extraordinary person i know. To put out this video where you encourage other teachers and carvers and expose them to us is a selfless act of kindness, ego-less attitude and the signs of a truly great teacher and mentor to us all. In these times, this is rare and frankly, so refreshing. I know we all notice that about you and love you because of it. Secondly, i have come to the belief that sometimes bad things truly do happen to good people. I am so sorry for the setups you have recently encountered. Please know that there are lots of us out there cheering for you and wishing you better health and luck. I sincerely encourage you to setup some sort of fundme site or patreon or whatever...so that we can help you through these tough times. We know you will get through them and continue to be our guru of carving and in life itself. You truly are a great model. I have just started carving a few months ago...but you continue to inspire us all even while you are going through some obstacles. Let us help you in any way we can...please reach out (even though i know you probably won't feel comfortable doing so). This community, as you say, is growing and the interest is being stoked by you and others whom you mention. Thanks again and wishing you all the best!

Thank you Mark ..The whole purpose of these videos has been to help people learn to enjoy carving ..there should never be any competition against teachers to help people learn ..we should all be on the same page in teaching and I will not deal with carvers who use the teaching format simply to make money with no love for carving ..Yes you can make videos to sell ..but first should be your love for carving and teach people your God Given Talent ..As far as my situation of illness and hard luck ..I have dealt with this my whole life since I was young and lost my first wife to cancer at only 40 years old ..my second to divorce after I raised her two girls for 16 years and then she left ..so I have seen hardship ..But God is still good and he will see me through this ..Thank you for your concern and God Bless you ..Kepp carving and enjoy and stay safe ..Thank you Mark

Doug does some great work. Watching his videos Is how I found you. I commiserate with your plight with the insurance company. Always frustrating and bothersome.
Your welcome to come to western KY and spend some time with us; plenty of room. Lol.
Will keep you in our prayers, be safe. As always, I appreciate you and what you do. Cheers.
