Jean, this is lovely and sooo helpful! And, also, I want to thank you after watching you and your son visiting in a prior video, laughing and having a good time helps me when I am helping my son with ADD. I have to stop worrying so much when I'm with him as it affects him and have fun with him!
Wonderful Vicki! I always say we must focus on what our special boys CAN do...and NOT on what they CAN'T do! Then there are no great expectations on either side and we can enjoy one another! :) All the best! :) Take care:)
Dear Jean I am so happy for you, you make my day brighter and better, your quilt looks great and I learn something new from you always. Thank you for your sharing heart. Big huge hugs from my home to yours thank you for teaching me and giving me the encouragement that I can do better I just need to try. ❤️🇬🇧
Hi Jean, I find it so relaxing watching as you free motion. Once you get into the pattern and rhythm I can see how the brain and hands work together. Love it so far. 👍🏻
I just love your videos! You my dear Jean are the one who inspired me to give free motion quilting a go. I truly thank you for keeping it REAL! I'm not near as great as you but I am improving. Thank you again oh yeah I love hearing u talk, LOVE your accent! Please don't stop teaching. Sending you much love and blessings from Tennessee 💗
Wonderful Pricilla!! THANK YOU so much for sharing that!! I really appreciate that you take time to watch me and have learned something!! :) Thanks again and take care:)
Very good Jean, your quilting is really coming along. I can’t believe you managed to do the quilting without gloves, I tried it once and bombed. I took the liberty of showing off your quilt, my daughter loved your Dresden Plate and your use of polkadots and stripes within your quilt. I’ll be practicing your design, of course of sample pieces. Thanks for sharing with us, never boring . 👍❤️😊
Isn't that interesting? I tried gloves and Bombed!!! :) LOL! Thanks for the confidence in showing off my quilt!! And who doesn't love polka dots and stripes together!?! LOL! Boring I NEVER am:)
Such a great stitch on your flying geese and I especially like the hook stitch in the center of the flying goose... well done as always and the more I see the colored fabric up close they look fabulous.....TFS
Good Afternoon Jean. Wow you’re doing a beautiful job with your free motion quilting, I just love it. Enjoy your time working on your quilt too. It’s so beautiful and colorful. Have a wonderful rest of the day.❤️🧵✂️😃🌻
Hi Jean. I love your little flying geese pattern quilting. All my FG units are pieced and ready and I've just sewn up to block number 14 and am still having fun with my Kaffe Fassett fabrics. I enjoy watching you free motioning. Take care and see you soon xxx
Hi Jean! Lovely, lovely quilting design! As you made the curves, then the "hooks" as you called them, to me it makes the geese above it look like an umbrella :) Such a great way to quilt the geese!
Wonderful Christine ~ you can do it!! Believe me, it took me AGES to get my stitches even...but still I mess up and make a huge one or a teeny tiny one, now and again!! LOL!
Thanks for the tips and demo of your flying geese FM was wondering how you was going to quilt them. I am going to give it a try. I've done some FM and I love your circles. I still have to finish making my blocks. I will be adding the extra borders like you showed us putting the other blocks together. I am so happy with what I have accomplished so far. Thanks again for doing this Block 2021 and taking the time out to show us how to free motion.
Thank you for this video. This is saving me so much time this method is a game changer for me soo much faster than the technique i was using on flying geese. ... Thank you John in Massachusetts
Great to hear!! I too was stumped and the thought of ALL those starts and stops sent me nuts!!! LOL! But this is a good way to do it continuously:) Thanks John:)
It looks fab Jean and you make it look so easy. I'm away on holidays at the moment but will get back to finishing my quilt when I get home. Thank you for sharing this and I might even try it on my dear Jean quilt xx
Jean your quilt is amazing! I’m just now making my blocks to go around the flying geese. Little behind but that’s ok. I will March on 😆. I can’t thank you enough for giving freely on your time and talent .Can’t figure out where to post pictures on my iPad.I love how your free motion quilting your is on your flying geese. Have a great day!
You can do it! Slow and steady! This is no race! You can send me pictures of anything to: Truelovequiltsforyou@gmail.com. I'd love to see your blocks! :)
Somehow I missed this video when you first put it on RUclips, but I’m ready to quilt my Jean’s challenge quilt, this will be my first completed quilt, and you answered all my questions! Thanks Jean! I’ve been practicing but was having such a hard time getting my speed consistent on my old singer 15-91 so I splurged and bought a Juki TL-2010Q, it’s so much better! I’m really down to the wire on the deadline, but with the new machine I think I’ll make it 🥳 can’t wait to send pictures!
I enjoy listening to you, Jean, and some of the funny things you say, "airy fairy." LOL I have the Juki TL-18QVP but I'm not nearly as adept at FMQ with it as you are with yours. That is why I use my Bernina with the BSR (stitch regulator). Thanks for your great videos and chit chats. God Bless!
Wonderful! So when you use your Bernina for free motion quilting, the stitch regulator engages for that task? Thank so taking precious time to watch me:)
Thelma writes: Jean, I have just found this free motion on flying geese quilt. It is lovely and looks simply enough for me. I am not an expert on free motion, far from it LOL 😆 🤣 Still practicing but I think I might have ago on this. I am not trying to make a big quilt, too daunting but thought I might make a small flying geese sewing machine mat and quilt it using your design, see how I go. Thank you for this tutorial, Jean. ❤ ❤
Great job. I'm learning so much. Thank you. I read how to do it but watching you cements how to do it. Demostrations are so much better for me. Many many thanks!
I do like the continuous stitching, one of my pet hates is the starting and stopping, bringing up the bobbin thread and securing the end thread. I am doing more and more free motion quilting and I find it quite therapeutic (when it goes well). Thanks again Jean. Hope Ian and Maxwell are doing ok.🏴
Thanks for sharing Margaret! I think you nailed the operative "WHEN it goes well"!!!! LOL! And when it DOESN'T, it's time to WALK away and have a drink!!! LOL! Shredded thread, broken needles, eyelashes, sore shoulders, tense neck, puckers....all the bane of our existence IF it doesn't GO WELL!! LOL! But when it DOES....we soar!! :) LOL!!!
Thank you for sharing your quilting with us. I must try free motion. I am doing straight line quilting with added decorative stitches. I like the combination of a scallop paired with the straight lines. Worked nicely on a jelly roll race quilt.
Try a new needle, mine had a burr I could not see but felt and after changing to a different brand have no trouble. Also make sure your bobbin is in correctly and wound correctly. Hope that helps, wish I was there to help you xxx
You also must try out your tension, rethreading, new needle on scrap fabric to make sure all is well, but sometimes the fault is in the actual free motion quilting movements, of either going too slow or too fast around a curve. As I always say MORE practice makes Progress!! All the best:) Keep at it! Once you 'dial things in' and you find your groove, you'll be OFF!! :)
You make it look so, so easy but I know you’ve done a lot of FMQ. Do you reduce your max speed on your Juki to have a consistent speed with the foot feed? Guessing it has the speed regulator on it, a nice feature some of the Juki models have.
Thanks Jo! I pretty much never change the speed ('hare') on my JUKI ~ Speedy Gonzalez here!! LOL! My JUKI doesn't have a stitch or speed regulator when I'm free motion quilting (at least I don't THINK it does! LOL).
I have practice and practice FM and do finish but it is not good and my fabric just does not want to move on the sewing machine bed or the table. It feels like is is dragging! I was trying to do swirls but think I will stick to straight line or the way you are doing yours!! Appreciate you sharing!!
Check your manual to see if you can loosen the pressure on your presser foot mechanism. The fmq foot should just glide on top, not anchor the fabric, making it difficult to move. Also make sure the bed of your machine is nice and shiny and smooth so the fabrics can slip along. Thanks for watching and keep on, Cheryl:)
Jean, this is lovely and sooo helpful! And, also, I want to thank you after watching you and your son visiting in a prior video, laughing and having a good time helps me when I am helping my son with ADD. I have to stop worrying so much when I'm with him as it affects him and have fun with him!

After watching your vid I was able to quilt my flying geese exactly as you demonstrated. Thank you!
That makes me very pleased!! Thanks:)
Dear Jean I am so happy for you, you make my day brighter and better, your quilt looks great and I learn something new from you always. Thank you for your sharing heart. Big huge hugs from my home to yours thank you for teaching me and giving me the encouragement that I can do better I just need to try. ❤️🇬🇧
Thank you so much Lynn! Such nice things you say ~ I really appreciate that! :) Thank YOU for taking time to watch me:)
Hi Jean, I find it so relaxing watching as you free motion. Once you get into the pattern and rhythm I can see how the brain and hands work together. Love it so far. 👍🏻
Wonderful! You nailed it ~ it truly is getting your brain, hands, foot and machine in sync:) Thanks Jill;)
I just love your videos! You my dear Jean are the one who inspired me to give free motion quilting a go. I truly thank you for keeping it REAL! I'm not near as great as you but I am improving. Wonderful Pricilla!! THANK YOU so much for sharing that!! I really appreciate that you take time to watch me and have learned something!! :) Thanks again and take care:)
The FM quilting at the bottom of the geese block looks like wings. Great choice!
Thank you:)
Very good Jean, your quilting is really coming along. I can’t believe you managed to do the quilting without gloves, I tried it once and bombed.

Thanks Annie:) You do awesome free motion quilting also:) I've SEEN your quilts! LOL!! Keep safe:)
Thank you Jean for your encouraging words. 😃 😊
Any time!
Hi Jean! Lovely, lovely quilting design! As you made the curves, then the "hooks" as you called them, to me it makes the geese above it look like an umbrella :) Such a great way to quilt the geese!
Oh thank you! And you are right, Marla, teeny umbrellas keeping my geese dry:)
Jean, your quilt looks glorious, thank you for the quilting demo. It is quite hypnotic watching you quilt.
Oh thank you Marie:)
You do make it look so easy. i try it every now and then, one day I'll get it down.
Aw thanks! It was NOT easy to begin with, however with tons of practice you can Get it:)
Great tut Jean….AND she kept talking all the while free motion quilting! Thanks for sharing this great idea!🎉😌
What I meant was I couldn’t be talking while doing this!
You are so welcome! And yes, I can TALK even while Free motion quilting:) LOL!
Tried it after watching you and to my amazement it looks decent, wow! Am in heaven! ♥️
So glad! You rock Tineke!!! How awesome are you!?!? LOL! Well done:)
Wow Jean those stitch lengths look so even how wonderful I need to practice more!!!
Wonderful Christine ~ you can do it!! Believe me, it took me AGES to get my stitches even...but still I mess up and make a huge one or a teeny tiny one, now and again!! LOL!
