Just purchased your middle suggestion in both 14” and 16” and don’t know which to keep. I paid $600 more for the 16 inch which at this point is just for the bigger screen, battery life. , and slightly better speakers. Same CPU, GPU, Ram, storage. Not sure which to keep, as I can return both

I think maybe there is something wrong with your configuration in Premiere - are you sure you have the M1 version of Premiere installed? I have both the M1 Pro and the M1 Max, using them with 10 bit 4:2:2 4K footage from the fx3 and A7siii like you are, and they play flawlessly at full res view. And they play pretty smoothly in multicam when playing 3 cameras simultaneously, graded etc. You really shouldn’t be seeing any stuttering at all. It’s definitely worth paying extra for the M1 Max though if you’re a video editor. 4K 10 bit 4:2:2 is rapidly becoming a kind of base level industry standard, and in the coming 2/3 years video editors need a computer that will handle that graded, multicam, stabilised etc. the M1 Pro can work with it pretty well, but the Max gives the headroom to cut through it effortlessly. I got the 14” M1 Pro as a travel computer, but can really feel the difference when editing on the 16” M1 Max.

I've been hearing this "your config is wrong" about Premiere since 2007 when we bought a super expensive HP turnkey workstation custom made for Premiere... The performance was never great, and it was never great on any Windows or Mac ever since. It's just shitty codebase. After Effects is even worse, but I sort of love to use it even when literally any other similar program is miles ahead in performance.

Having owned the m1 pro 'base' model for a while now I'll say that it is not ideal for After Effects. That's just a small part of what I do and I've made it work when I've needed it. The main tradeoff is render time. To get a MacBook that would equal my windows machine for After Effects would have required getting the top of the line machine.

@@io_inc Yeah I got the M1 Pro and even running natively the default project is running at 20-27fps, and if you reduce the screen percentage you can manage to get 30-40 fps, and with low engine scalability it runs at 50-60 fps, and running a finished game is horrible (10-20 fps). As i've seen many pro's filmmakers from my country doing Proxy media even when they're using amazing machines, like a 15k USD Mac, i think we're a little bit too freak to think that the Mac Pro isn't enough for filmmakers (even the ones who edit 6k Raw footage). Because when we use proxy media, the playback runs smooth. And even with the most expensive processors from many Notebooks, the render time of those machines will be 2x or 3x longer than a Desktop... But it's fine for the sake of mobility and a minimalist setup for running gun professionals. I'm really excited to sell my Desk (Ryzen 5 3600 12 threads, 6 core with 16gb ram and 1660 Super 6gb) To grind for a Macbook Pro 13''. The only con of the mac is the render time, but it's our responsability to know yours equipment and set a nice deadline for any project that we made!

This is one of the best reviews from a video creator perspective that I have ever seen. Nice that you also put in a windows laptop.
I was thinking about the m1 max 16“. Not that the mac studio is out which is specwise the same. But lacking a vattery and an amazing screen is 1000$ cheaper. I am still tempting to get the macbook because of portability. What do you think? Keep it up subscribed :)

    • @JaredJayLemon

I'm going back and forth about this, too... I have monitors and all that, so the Studio would just plug in and give mind-melting performance for an incredible price... but I really like the idea of being able to work wherever, instead of being stuck at my desk. It would be an easy choice if the Studio were more expensive!

So I decided to go with the greatest no brainer configuration 16.5" M1 Pro base model for an extra 200$ over the 14" M1 pro base model. Mainly because you get a bigger XDR display and it has more battery life then the MacBook air! Plus I get two extra CPU cores & two extra GPU cores which is a bonus for me. In addition I also upgraded the SSD to 1TB for future proofing. If you have any spare time and would like to check out my M1 pro unboxing with a beginners perspective since I only shot it with my iPhone 📹😁Thank you in advance and I hope you have a great!

Almost for all features you need a 3rd party app, where it's implemented properly. Not acceptable for such an expensive device. Apart from Mac OS, laptops are beautiful and system icons are nice. But too much clicking, switching windows here and back and jumping from side to side.
