Day 5 on ICON OF THE SEAS - Skipping St. Thomas to Ride Only ONE Slide...Not What We Planned

- Join us as we embark on @RoyalCaribbean's Icon of the Seas out of the Port of Miami for a 7-night Eastern Caribbean Cruise. This was for Spring Break 2024 and we left on March 23, 2024.
This vlog covers our second port day on the cruise which was St. Thomas. We had visited St. Thomas last year and the all aboard time was 1:30pm, so we decided to skip the port all together and use this time to visit Thrill Island Waterpark and ride the slides with, hopefully, less crowds. This would have been a brilliant plan EXCEPT that most of the slides were closed. This was NOT announced in the app. In fact the app, stated the waterpark was open. They did open Storm Surge, one of the family raft slides at 11:00am and we waited over an hour to ride it. After that, Rider said it wasn't worth it and he wanted to go to the pool, so that is what we did.
We also ate lunch at El Loco Fresh, which was excellant and then had a drink at Swim & Tonic, the swim-up bar, before calling it a day and heading back to our stateroom for a family nap. Not the day we had intended, but we made the most of it.

I'm looking forward to a carnival cruise from Port Canaveral to Nassau Bahamas
Have a great time!
That is such a bummer that the slides weren't open. I wonder what the reasoning is for that? For families that want to stay on ship, they should have that option available.
I think they were doing drills, which is understandable. However, we checked the app and it said the water park was open. So my complaint here is that closures like this should be communicated to guests (at least via the app). They only had 2 of the 6 slides open, so according to Guest Services, it was open. Then we were told one of the raft slides would open at noon, so we walked around and then came back at 11:15am to see that it was now open and the line was long. Had they told us it was opening at 11am, we would have stayed and waited and gotten in line right when it opened. They also opened the 2 drop slides at 11am but those have taller height requirements and were basically walk ons for the first hour. I didn’t understand their reasoning to open 2 slides that had less demand when the 1 family raft slide had a line over an hour long.
This was going to be our plan for the St. Thomas port day too. Is there a good time to ride the slides with less crowds or is it pretty much always packed?
Our cruise was spring break, so there was a lot more kids than an average cruise. A lot of teenagers. The only day I saw it was empty was at St Kitts, but again, I don’t know if the slides were open. Other than that, it was always very busy. Maybe first thing in the morning or end of day. But I wouldn’t rely on the app for times that it is open. I would speak to someone that works there and ask, will the thrill park be open and which slides will be open? That was my issue with the whole thing was the lack of communication and then have 1/3 of the park open and them considering that as open.
