  • Peripheral nerve injury, as a consequence of trauma, surgery, inflammation, or other causes, is a major medical problem. Diagnosis and treatment are still considered as unmet medical needs. This TED talk discusses exciting new paths to treating nerve damage.
Chris McCurdy is Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacology, Research Professor in the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The reality of drug abuse is that people become addicted so quickly that withdrawal becomes intolerable and the addicts are stuck. McCurdy’s work is to rescue people from addiction to drugs like cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine. He does this by working to make withdrawal more endurable and thus more likely to succeed. His work uses kratom, a mixture common in Southeast Asia used to treat more common ailments.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

There us a significant difference between dependency and addiction. By running dependency, abuse and addiction all together, you are doing a disservice to those of us who function with chronic pain with opioids. Society shames us enough without professionals not making clear that dependency is not addiction.

Yes, but it's very easy to slip from dependancy to addiction. I was functional. I made my regular pills last but when I got certain ones, they went quickly. I've told myself for years it's dependancy and not addiction. I've had to face that it wasn't just dependancy.

      That says something about you.
I have a friend that was addicted to alcohol and street drugs. Clean now for years.
*He decided that he was going to stop me from addiction when he saw me with a drink, playing the lottery (caused me to lose $2,500), trying to judge me by his faults. *HE HAS THE ADDICTION PROBLEM LIKE YOU*, I DON'T! *YOU CAN'T PREDICT THAT I OR ANYONE ELSE WILL BECOME ADDICTED.*
      I already explained my situation.

That's not surprising in my opinion. It's because research takes long. There haven't been any completed clinical trials on kratom yet, which is not because the interest isn't there but much more so because of bureaucracy and legal restrictions. I actually think the rise of kratom's popularity has been rather impressive, given that 20 years ago essentially no one in the west had heard about it.

I can’t get my medical records proving all the alternative to opioids . I’m in my 60 s now only get offered surgery & injections that I spent yrs trying but they all failed to give pain relief. Should I just give up & get street drugs to end my suffering? I’m st the end of my life rope!!! My GP knew my opioid treatment for all the yrs but refuses to help me. You give me no hope to function again !! I’ve needed pain help yesterday I need Help now.

Chris is one of the very few and the leading researcher in the medical field who has studied Kratom extensively, and he says the results thus far have been outstanding. He sincerely believes that Kratom has great potential in treating opioid addiction or as a much safer substitute for those using opiates. This man deserves a lot of credit for Kratom remaining legal so far because of the extensive research they he's done and is still doing, and he has been the most credible voice that the important people who have the authority to either ban Kratom or keep it legal have been listening to, and if that day should come that Kratom eventually remains legal and even used in traditional medicine, then we will owe this man a huge debt of gratitude for leading the way.

But Illinois is taking advantage of patients by ungodly high prices. in Denver med patients pay less than 100 a oz fro meds. Here I have to pay 400 for same thing. I live on disability and can't afford what helps. So my question is how has this helped in post amputee pain, or as it's called generically residual limb pain? It's getting bad. I'm having suicidal thoughts. Fighting to live every day. I need help and can't find any.

What you have described sounds like a condition called erythromelalgia. It's a subset of small fiber neuropathy. It comes from a genetic mutation that most often runs in families, NOT from diabetes, alcoholism, HIV, etc. My mother, myself, one of my children, and one of my aunts suffer greatly with this. All you can do is treat the considerable pain of this awful genetic malady. After 30 years of trial and error, I have found Lyrica (pregabalin) to be the most effective. The opiates are generally worthless.
I wish you well and hope you will research the condition. Anne Louise Oaklander of Mass Gen has some excellent RUclips videos that explain it quite well.

Kratom made me thirsty and that was it. Tried every kind available and was thirsty on each and every one. It’s not a miracle cure for all of us.

Not everyone develops tolerance, like me for 20 years on opioid meds for pain I have not developed tolerance and my guess is that is a non- fact and while some do develop tolerance most actually do not. And the doctor hears, blah blah blah blah bluh blabba blabba blah blah. Oxycodone is a miracle drug for me yet I get less than 1/3 of my ideal dose and still in misery they want to run me down to zero. It is maddening.

So if you have fybromyalgia which for me affects every nerve in my body how will this help? There is no way you can cut me open every where and correct it...no. .I'm sorry but I'm a believer in the poppy plant which produces the opioids used for pain. .. Chemists always want to make something from their lab like some mad scientist when instead we have natural herbs and plants that was given to us for the purpose of medicine
I'm so tired of hearing the words addiction and addicts as long as there has been humans on earth and continue to have humans there will always be those that will find a way to get their "high" ..sorry but that's reality. .and governments and officials and dr's know this. ..this is all propaganda
This guy sounds like a commercial trying to sell his get rich product. .oh and by the looks of it he is also an addict. .to food. .and that wasn't meant to be mean. .just saying that you can be an addict to just about anything. .but letting millions of innocent people lay in in cruciating pain or take their lives. ..think about that. .how much agony do you have to be in to take your own life. ..all because there is relief out there but it's not being given to these people. .why. .mostly. .money and greed. ..

I to have fibromyalgia and I’m not an addict I’m probably dependent at this point though. Why is it when I had to take large doses of ibuprofen for a year no one called me an addict but any opioid for more than a week and all of sudden I’m an addict? I also have nerve damage in my neck and back plus ruptured discs between my vertebrae as well as severe carpal tunnel in both wrists and a number of other painful conditions.
So yes I want a painkiller that works and for me that’s an opioid based painkiller, not OxyContin either, just basic Vicodin. I’d say let them walk a mile in my shoes but I can’t walk a mile so let them cry
a hundred feet in my shoes.

Lots of nervines, lots of adaoptogens, lots of anti inflammatories. These things not only cured what my doctors were saying was incurable, it’s done this for people for thousands of years

Actually, Mr. McCurdy in the video isn't after money...as he explains in this video, this is an issue that's very close to his heart. He has helped change ppl's view & treatment of Chronic Pain, Anxiety & Addiction. He is not a vendor, trying to make money from selling Kratom.... Pls educate yourself before making rude comments 🌿💚✌️
