@@hamburgler227 Interesting perspective. Most are in awe at Moyer's capacity to communicate in a way that makes Campbell's wisdom accessible to anyone and everyone. Indeed, Campbell's work is largely about universality and I don't think anyone could have facilitated Campbell's depth to all in the way that Moyers does. He's brilliant.

Bill Moyers introduces the subject of women suffering terribly from being identified as the “source” of everything bad, which Campbell briefly acknowledges and then goes right to Schopenhauer. I am telling you, there has never been any culture where men and women have been entirely equal, and instead have been constantly repressed, treated like a man’s goods, refused education, having no part in religion or the politics of living….and look where it’s got us. Men have been absolutely _INSANE_ about their power over women, because *the incredible number of varied gifts of 50% of every population, regardless of culture, have been benignly or brutally suppressed, ignored, denigrated….except of course as often crude sexual objects or breeding stock. So, how do you think that’s worked for us?

Every single time I read or listen to Campbell it makes a new connection to all the things I've learned before. The concept that the Tree of Knowledge was when mankind split everything into good or evil, learned to judge as only the God had judged, was the birth of a duality that has separated mankind from the sacred absolute ever since. My purpose in living is to seek unity with the divine once again. That is my concept of paradise. There are many Paths to that unity if one chooses to take them.
Yes me too. Listening to each lecture barrages the mind into that state of learning /realization of where in our own life the knowledge can assert itself. And you miss a lot then! Rewatching gives even more at different bits. Great series.

Campbell's works are brilliant, an amazing author. Man with a thousand faces, great read. His literature is top shelf as well as this gentleman. Always had high regards for this man. He is missed much on our big blue marble.

Watched when originally presented on PBS decades ago and now able to watch again. This offers me more insight into our times with Campbell’s words and teaching. So grateful for this opportunity. Bill Moyers exemplifies a wonderful listener and one to ask questions to gain clarity and insight.

Watching for perhaps the sixth time since it was first shown on pbs. It feels like the first time.
It also feels as though my consciousness has regressed more than increased - omg!! - but what has increased is a sense of wonder and awe. The seventh decade stage of life makes this sense of wonder and awe over before Earth and we as her creatures, and of the miracle of my own mysterious existence, more available as do-ing gives way to be-ing. My fear of death evaporates in the awareness of the cycles of life from microscopic to cosmic.
Please expose the young people in your lives to the world-views expressed here. It is a healing antidote to what they're usually seeing and hearing.

It goes without saying that Joseph Campbell was a brilliant scholar and teacher. I love Bill Moyers for being so smart and honest in doing his job that he served as a conduit to us that allowed us to learn and absorb some of what Campbell knew without putting in the work and without the fear or intimidation that I for one would have felt if somebody shoved me into a room with him and said "you can ask him anything you want. Don't blow it." (lol) What a gift! Thanks for posting.

This is brilliant and alluring. It is the most eloquent academic manifestation of Luciferian doctrine and theosophy, although it is not presented as such, that I have ever encountered.
There is no doubt in my mind that mythology, symbols, psychology, and sociology are all intertwined and inform one another even when not being obviously connected across cultures via shared artifact. This is well known from an occult magical perspective - with the aggregated focus of individuals holding the ability to modify that which is material. This principle is particularly important to the modern entertainment industry and social media which attempts to create a concentrated focus of many conscious souls. I don’t know if this gentleman was actively involved in illuminated societies but his theory of monomyth and self deification seems in concord with those pursuing knowledge of mystery religions and the power to rule the uninitiated therein.

I saw this whole series on a late night cable channel (remember those?) Came home from late shift at the Contemporary Resort and was blown away by what this dude was putting out there! Opened up my eyes to the Truth was a moving target, so, Keep Your Mind OPEN!!!
I remember coming across this video series in the library. It was about 1993, and this was a series of about 8 videos -- on VHS. I bought them home, slipped them into the VCR in my bedroom, and fell asleep listening to this -- material that is one of the pillars of the current flourishing of extra-normie thought.
I so admire this man and his works and books.

I am a great fan of Joseph Campbell. I have bought 4 books including his autobiography, and The Power of Myth. The book is another way to reinforce our thoughts and when we listen to him inn flesh and brain, we get Nirvana. My humble namaskaram to KINO LORBER and the ones who uploaded this piece of knowledge and wisdom.
I saw this when it aired and was captivated. Like the viewers Bill Moyers mentioned, it changed my life. I guess Bill went back to it in 2012 and redid the opening introductory segments. Joseph Campbell was a true gem and inspired me to study anthropology (as George Lucas had as well). Also was part of the inspiration for me to come to Japan. I was able to watch it again when it aired in the 90s and I was on JET program here in Japan. This was the same time that a George Lucas exhibit showcasing his films was being shown in Tokyo. Great timing.
Speaking of timing, once again Joseph is right on the money talking about 'the machine' and the lack of humanity it brings. With the advent of AI blossoming into our lives as we speak, this temptation to be part of the machine, to worship it as a god even, is going to be too hard to resist for so many out there because it will, indeed bring them what they desire. Let's just hope there's a Luke Skywalker out there as well, to save us from ourselves.

Wonderful, probably more so, than the first time that I saw it many years ago, because I understand more of what they are saying about life and how to get the most out of it. ;)
Metaphysics is taking the good things from all sacred scriptures, from myths, from psychology and philosophy. This is similar to what Mr. Campbell is saying - that truth is in all religions, we just need to get beyond the "temporal inflection" that doesn't hold up to the Truth of "...love thy enemy, open up, don't judge..."
I’m starting to think Jordan Peterson got all of his fundamental ideas from Joseph Campbell and then just mashed them with his studies of psychology and his experiences as a clinician. Seems like he even imitates Campbell’s way with words and his dress. Not that it’s a bad thing, but just goes to show how great of a legacy or meme Campbell became. A modern hero.
And Campbell from Jung
He does. They all do use José Silver, Joseph Campbell what is very good but they are not mentioned their name when they are teaching or speaking for this generation. That is not Okey
Peterson is a deeply read Jungian, so was Campbell. So they seem similar cause they're both thinking in terms derivative from Jung (not to downplay either, but Jung was the pioneer - as Jung himself said in his Preface to Neumann's The Origins and History of Consciousness). Peterson expounds upon Jung through experimental psychology (whereas Jung was more in the realm of theoretical psych.) and Campbell does the same through mythology.

If you take the point of view of the flower, then it becomes clear. If you have too much ego to see yourself as a flower, then the keys will remain apart from you. I know myself as flower and tree, birds and bees. I give my prayer to the darkness and all the darkness cannot extinguish the meaning of a single flower to god. My takeaway - myth is a spiritual pattern to follow, and the way it’s been communicated throughout the history of civilization is through religion. But modernly, so much of religion is secular, material, mechanical, or corrupt. Layered over ancient wisdom is overly-literal interpretation, dichotomous thinking, the harmful legacy of colonialism, racism, cognitive biases, etc. So how is an individual supposed to move forward spiritually, not just individually but also within a COMMUNITY, which is essential for spiritual transformation (service, compassion, forgiveness, etc). How do we continue this human work of transformation when religion has in so many ways failed us? Do we try to transform it from the inside? How do you do that?

The story of the samurai at 29:04, this is from Muslim History.This actually happened to one of the most renowned companion of the Prophet Muhammad named Ali ibn Talib in a battle where the enemy spat on his face and he declined to kill him. When others asked why didn't you kill him? he told them if i had killed him, it would have not been for the sake of GOD but for my own revenge. You can search it up through any official Muslim material. His name was ALI IBN TALIB and he was also named The Lion of ALLAH.
Often many cultures have similar myths, which is fascinating. As thought the stories themselves need to be told, or enacted by different people throughout the world.
Already read these books...yet I only read these books after I had my light knocked out ended up in the hospital and had my dream looking down on earth with what Moyer referenced as the two masks. I discovered these videos on vhs in our junk closet when I was 13 years old. My father must have bought them and never got around to watching them. These have guided my thinking as a Christian my whole life and led me to get a literature degree and have become a professional story teller. I even lived in Asia for 8 years and studied Buddhism under a foreigner program, an extension teaching program of a local master in Taiwan. I haven’t watched these videos in 30 years, but it is exciting to watch them again, and not being so confused or mind blown but instead knowing what he saying and even being able to add to it now. And I am happy that I never went down the same path of his, to conclude that eastern traditions of oneness and lack of judgment is superior. To me Christianity (theological level, not faith) which balances judgment with forgiveness and grace, is superior.

I watched some studied most of these interviews - I loveJoe, he has enriched my life almost as much as music has...At 71 I have moved to stand on his shoulders - the experience of being alive - the rapture of being alive - for me is: within eudaemonia - a word I just learned two years ago. Joe is right that most people don't pursue eudaemonia - most people pursue happiness - which is a tragedy for humanity because - being alive and happiness is nice but it is certainly no eudaemonia....which seems to me to be followed by gratitude.
Joe may have missed this little fact: dopamine - pleasure, serotonin - satisfaction, feelings of mastery and competence, emotional reward, as a result of enacting purpose motivated by core values. Eudaemonia is experienced in my body, not sequestered in my mind.
I had no idea how wise Joseph Campbell was. I wonder if his wisdom originated from his personal experiences. Loving what is. Suffering is wanting things to be different. He is a priest - bringing the divine to earth. 😅
Man i never liked books of any sort or like reading or science or even history i was just watching this to study but now i want to learn more about this.

This is a very good conversation. I still believe, that life can be experienced how we want it. I believe that man's greed breeds suffering, much suffering. I believe that is to blame, and man is still a liar, that refuses to acknowledge his own shortcomings. Man is still pointing the blame, yet this time at God. Does God create the suffering or does Man? The punishment is not unjust.
