Your welcome Jeff!
The Russian impressionists are bloody awesome....Sergent would die for some of these pictures.
I don't think Sargent had much to learn from most of the Russians. The famous Ukrainian painter Ilya Repin - whose technique was later used for propaganda purposes only - said to Finnish master Järnefelt in the 1890's that Russian art drags Finnish art by 40 years, and Finland's internationally most known artist and Sargent's friend Edelfelt replied - "probably 20 years is enough". A couple of masterpieces here, but many a bit clumsy, compared with the French school, or the Latvian Jew Isaac Levitan - or even the Russian Ivan Shiskin. My opinions, everyone has the right to disagree, if there's a reason for that.
Interesting artwork, thank you
Thanks Mary
Very nice paintings by this artist Phil. You spoke about not using too many values because that only adds to more detail. I was thinking about this too, would it be best to use just 4 values in a painting? And then just use color temperature and broken color to change/modify the various values?
Yes, of course the bigger the painting the more values needed. For a larger painting I will use 3 values in the light and 3 in the shadow. and use temperature contrast and broken color.
Thanks Phil
