Brandon Sanderson commented that he was inspired by the Mongol Empire when he created Alethkar, because they were a people better suited for fighting than actual empire-building. For some reason I've always pictured Alethkar to be something like the Timurid Empire: A derived state from the Mongol Empire, and a warlike nation with notable sophistication in their art, customs and architecture.
Huh, I hadn't really thought of them like Mongols, for two reasons I suppose: firstly, that they aren't culturally nomadic, and their military focus is on heavy infantry rather than cavalry. But yeah... I can certainly see similarities.
Ironically, the Mongols had better social mobility than the Alethi or any of the Vorin nations. Genuinely, Genghis and all his successors would look at the light eyes-dark eyes divide and be like, "Tengri, hold me back!"
This is a hilarious misread of the Mongols to elevate the Timurids. I view both states as important and brilliant examples of steppe and Persianate governance but to claim the Mongols couldn't empire build when they became the foundation of legitimacy on the steppe for the next five centuries is laughable It's even more ridiculous when you compare this to Mr pyramids of skulls himself Timur whose empire fractured far worse and much more quickly than Temujin's after his death
I think you're a little off on Navani. One of the main reasons she went with Gavilar was because Dalinar scared her with his intensity. Also, Dalinar didn't pursue her because he knew that Gavilar wanted her. Not saying that she wouldn't have still gone with Gavilar, she did have a desire for power, but thing might have been more complicated had Dalinar pursued her.

The Blackthorn name wasn’t due to a single arrow. It was because Dalinar had been hit by many arrows. His armor was covered with them, not all having penetrated, but to those who saw him it looked very menacing.

Dalinar is one of the best examples of a conflicted and complex individual who is a hero to man and a monster to many more. Once you know his backstory and what he'd done, his journey and the challenges he faced while seeking his redemption and becoming a Bondsmith are so much more meaningful. I think I've said it before, but giving the Wizards and Warriors treatment to the Codex Alera books would be pretty awesome!

@@davidblair9877 Oh, I'm aware. The scene and Dalinar's hatred just made it seem more personal and on par with Rome's sacking of Carthage at the end of the Second Punic War. It's one thing to incite terror to coerce your enemies to capitulate. It's another when there's a personal score to be settled between one power and the other. Essentially, this came across to me as Dalinar's personal FU and not just a campaign of terror.
@@aprince1250 fair. I hadn’t made the Carthage connection, but yes, Dalinar took his assassination attempt very personally. Ghengis certainly too Kwarhezm’s execution of envoys very, very personally.
