      to this day, i still have my pokemon crystal version in my safe that i had that was washed in the washer machine when i was a kid. it never went into the dryer, but it never seemed to have rested, as far as i can tell. so i never understood what i was supposed to do to recover my cartridge to it's former glory. the sticker looks good too, so i am not sure if i could make it ever work again or anything. i still keep it though as a reminder to never leave anything in the washer when i wish clothes.

    When I got Pokemon Black, I wanted the event Victini, but all I had to do was be in the parking lot close enough to the store to receive the item needed to catch the Victini. I was too embarrassed to go inside the store with my DS cause I was a fully grown adult and figured I'd be the oldest one in there for the event.

    Here in Finland we didn't get most of the Pokemon Promo events with legendaries. But when Mew became available for Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow there were some events where you could trade any Pokemon for Mew by using a special kiosk and if you missed those events you could just send your catridge to Nintendo Club so the official company that imported Nintendo consoles to our country could trade a Mew for you (they just took a common low level monster and traded it for Mew). Similar Nintendo Clubs were also in Sweden and in some other Northern European countries.

It worked a little differently than this one though, it worked as a normal pokemon game except if the system time was set to the distribution window in which case the distribution would take over. I recall him telling me that it only worked with diamond/pearl because platinum hadn’t yet come out at the time of the event. But I did get a darkrai from it so I guess he was telling the truth to some extent

    • @LeftvsReich
      @LeftvsReich 8 месяцев назад +12

      I did just this at PAX West 2023. It's not as easy as just walking around while it distributes, though, as other people have to have their compatible game open to the main menu and be constantly checking for event distributions while it's happening, which would be pointless to try. They can't just check their game at a later time.
      I ended up walking around during a Streetpass panel and offering it to people who had a Gen 4 cart (for shiny trio) on them, and we had to do it all together to make sure it worked and everyone got one of each. Gave away to maybe 5 or so very happy people, which made me happy, too.
      Can't wait to do it again next year.

A couple are unique, in that they give you an item to get to an otherwise inaccessible area (such as a liberty pass in black/white to get Victini). And they are all once per save file, so every time you reset your games to have another playthrough, you can obtain them over and over again.

    Man I remember a few of their events. One of my favorites, partly cause its the only one I got to get. But they gave out some cards for sun/moon x/y or om/as. I got mew and genesects cards during their respective events. Granted I didn't have a lot of friends to pvp with, and no internet, but these two combined with yveltel and I was dominating single player events.

I figured it wouldn't work and took the game out to see how it was. Water poured out of the gameboy and wouldn't turn on, but the emerald still works to this day.

    i always assumed those events would just be run by hardware the stores had, but using a DS with a special cartridge actually makes a lot more sense and is pretty clever by nintendo. that way, they don't need to rely on stores having any particular hardware or the hardware in some stores not working correctly, ruining the event there. and they don't need to figure out how to communicate with the recipient DSs, as the store DS is already equipped for that, which only leaves the development of the cartridge, which would be rather trivial in the grand scheme of things.

    There was a distribution ds made for these kind of things only featuring one screen and no buttons basically a ds made as cheap as possible for distribution events that would have these cartridges screwed into these ds

    I think my personal favorite event mons are the PCNY (Pokemon Center New York) Gen 2 ones. I showed off the screenshots of the Shiny Raikou in a FB group and had to explain that it was as legit as you can get, being a copy of the original save, traded over via emulator. Only thing is some of them can't pass the compatibility checks in newer games (otherwise unlearnable moves and the like) R/S/E seems to work but I haven't tried gen four and beyond

    I had a Pokemon Yellow game that ended up in the washing machine. My mom apologized multiple times.
    I wasn't too broken up about it though, my friend had stolen two of my best Pokemon from my game (I had traded them over to him to help him defeat the Elite Four) and he ended up resetting his game so he wouldn't have to give them back, so I was used to losing Pokemon by that point. Which was a short time actually. I was eight when I had the game, nine when I traded those Pokemon over (I think, because I remember that it was after I got Pokemon Gold), and another friend gave me her Yellow Version when my first one got stolen by a neighborhood kid, which was the one that ended up in the wash about a few months to a year later.
