had one as 968 CS from 1997 - 2000, what great fun i had with this car, i think, it came at the wrong time, a time, when Porsche company was already in bad condition, the CS (Clubsport) price decrease didn' help increasing sales, Wiedeking came 1992 and decided to discontinue 928 and 968 i.o. to decrease the number of varieties and different parts which made production too expensive. The Boxter (986) had 70% parts of the 911 and made production therefore much cheaper....

The good thing is that these 968’s have held up after decades on the road, incredible build quality! 💯💪 I see the nice ones lasting a lifetime! 🚀🚀 Sebastian thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Love the look of the 968. Love the three litre inline four cylinder with twin balance shafts 240/220 power feels quick / just right in a 3,000 pound car.
As a proud owner of a 1994 968, you hit on every single point perfectly. There is a very unique joy to having a car from such an interesting time in Porche's history, and I enjoy the curiousity it inspires. It's familiar in that it's a Porsche, but it's alien given that it's a model many don't recognize. Great video 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Excellent report. Having owned a 951 for over 30 years I can apprecaite your report. The body changes for the 968 were fantastic. It was a shame we did not get the 968 turbo in the US...if they had I would have bought one right away. Again thank you.
I have a 968 with 180k miles on it. Superb. Will do another 180k.. Perfect for long and fast journeys. Luckily I live in Germany... One thing.. IIRC 5th and 6th ARE overdrive, but the engine has so much torque, it will use all the gears properly.
It will easily do another 180k! Most people don’t know how strong these engines are, I know many 944’s with over 400k! David Morley thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Really interested to see the value of these in the next decade. I just bought one with 223k miles and it drives like it has 50k miles. Thanks for this video. There's definitely a lack of videos of 968s since most people who own these are 70+ in age.
Congrats! 🍾 Yess, they last a very long time! If taken care of… a lifetime! I’m totally going to be one of those 70+ year olds driving a 968, someday 💯💯😎😎 Caiden thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Great review! My 968 Cab was 31 years old this month (May 2024) and puts a smile on my face every time I twist the key and feel the big four rumble to life. The handling balance is phenomenal and, while it's not as fast or as sophisticated as my 997.2, nothing beats a warm Spring day, a curvy country road, and a 968 with the top down!
Diego, the biggest Porsche even in Florida in coming to Miami this month. It gets bigger every year, they even have a track day! If you can’t make it this year, try to come next year! It’s worth it! It’s called DTR, here’s their IG: instagram.com/dasrenntreffen
Just got my 1993 968 coupe. Great to drive, the balance is unreal. I am coming from a BMW 135i which was also very fun to drive, but I prefer the 968 just because it's something very different to anything else on the road. You're right, you just want to keep driving it and detailing it. Only problem with mine is a strong fuel smell in the cabin and I'm not sure what's up with that, hopefully nothing major.
Nice! Congrats! 🍾 You’re going to like it more and more as the miles go by. The fuel smells usually come from the engine bay, could be lines or injectors. If some of the lines are old, they’ll produce strong fumes even if nothing is leaking. I’d get it checked out fast, don’t put it off till later. The good thing is that any experienced tech will pinpoint where the smell is coming in less that 15 minutes. Peakhour thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Another new/recent video on the 968. The car was mis-understood when new (a 6 speed gearbox in 1991, crazy!), overpriced, not quick enough etc, etc. It seems that its taken 20+yrs for people to have finally appreciated the car. I've owned my 1995, metallic polar silver Sport (UK only) based on a CS and recognised by the factory as such since Aug 2003. Compared to the newer models 996, boxster 986/987, 997, cayman - it does feel dated (the design does go back to 1970 and the origin for the 924!) and perhaps down on power (240 bhp) but having driven it in various conditions - slow town driving, back seats down with rubbish in the back to my local tip/dump, touring around europe at different speeds on the autobahns, and in different weather, the 968 is just "quietly competent". Not shouty/loud - but it'll haul against M3 beem's, AMG Merc, TVR etc but perhaps with not the max performance that those cars have. Its handelling is "linear" - steering input, brakes etc, so you always know where you are and how close to limit of tyres, cornering etc. You can probably buy a faster car with quicker acceleration for less £/$ but as an overall package, its tough to find better IMHO, with great build integrity & reliability thrown in. You need to own/drive one for a while 12mths+ to appreciate it. Most road tests/testers borrow a car from a private owner or dealer and have to return it intact, so they don't get to explore its wider/full envelope, so their responses/comments are usually less than the car can actually deliver - but you've got to "rag" them (over 130mph) to get the benefits, then it comes alive. I don't regret owning mine for nearly 20yrs. All the best - whatever motor you own. Its the passion that counts.
This☝️is a fantastic comment! This is exactly how it is! Lots of cars make a good first impression, but how are they to live with? That’s where the 968 comes in, you really grow to love it more and more as you spend time with it. And yess, it’s taken years for people to appreciate the 968…but thats changing fast. As Porsche and Ferrari increase their production numbers, newer exotics have become common online. There are no more 968’s being built, it will always be rare…I love that! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 Darrell Hunt thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
@@HernanSpeed You are so right. About 20 yrs ago I inadvertently pulled up behind a shinny 968 and thought it was a new model. Very subtle yet beautiful. Little did I know that about 20 yrs. yep. when you had a couple of 944's you ask your self what to choose from the shelf. 911? Corvette? MB?.....you end up with only one answer ......968. Why? because it works and drives well and you love the looks!
I love it. My favorite Porsche. The layout and the large displacement 4 cylinder is what I like. To me, it is a blueprint for what modern cars should be but I don't see one. And turbo free.
These share DNA with the 944, 928, and 993. Mostly stylistically, but with the 944 obviously mechanically too. The 944 and 928 being parents and the 993 would become a younger sibling with the “family resemblance” they were creating between the cars. Porsches term, not mine as referenced by the designer Harm Legay. The front they were trying to model similarly with the 993 look and the rear with the 928 (most evident in the bumper design). What other Porsche carries so much cool heritage? Great video…thanks!
Awesome stats and completely true!! Car for that perfect early morning drive. Who needs coffee when you get to enjoy such a jam. IMO 993 and 968 are the best "modern classic" Porsches.
Thanks so much for doing such a wonderfully appreciative and heart-warming review of my favourite car! I bought a 1993 Club Sport in 2013. Admittedly the 968 is not QUITE as reliable as you say but overall build quality is fine and the engine very strong if cared for properly.
I sold most toys these past years, spending most of my free time with the kids while they’re little. I’m down to one 928, will be adding more toys again when the kids get a bigger 🙌🙌
Up against 300zx tt, 3000gt vr4, zr-1, rx-7, supra, nsx... it was a tough competition. Lap times told a different story, 968 was 10s faster at VIR. 6 gear was same ratio as the 5 speed in the 944. Seats recline in the Coupe and it's very easy to sleep in them!
I just want to add if you are a DIY’er, the 924S is probably the best of the bunch, the suspension is much easier to rebuild than the later 944, they seem to be less prone to rust, they, simpler electricals, and generally youll find them in better condition than phase 1 944.
Yes 🙌 I’ve also noticed that in the later 924S’s, most of them are well cared for. Prices are reasonable for the moment, but I see them going way up as people start realizing how fun they are 😎 Nboy7 thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Yes, the CS’s are priced higher….they’re definitely a collectors car. You can easily do the CS upgrades on a 968 and get incredible results! 🚀🚀🚀 Find a great one and make it cooler! 👊💥💥 MrLENrok thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
The hatch design is different in the 968/944….the glass is actually bigger. The rear window can separate from the frame, this can make it noisy. Also sometimes only one side will lock-in, this can cause lots of noises at the rear. Check out @NC944ER RUclips’s channel, he’s got some great videos on it! 👊🦾🦾 Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

Nice!! It’s great to have a few sets of wheels, I love the 3 piece 3.6 turbo 18”s on the 968, looks incredible! But I gotta admit, the 16’s are better for the potholes here in Miami. Wheels make a huge difference in these cars, totally changes up the look. Polak1Porsche thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
Maybe Miami people were too pretentious to cross shop with those other cars but that was not the case in my area of the midwest. I knew a guy that went 924>mitsubishi starion>944 turbo>968>fd rx7>996 911 carrera (and loved all of them). Also, people drove these cars. Autocrossed and raced them. Miami people might've treated them like princesses but they are actually Porsches.
Wait.. those are all fun cars! Sometimes the slower the car, the better….because you can push it way HARDER! 👊👊 Yeap 💯 Miami does have the image of being kinda pretentious, it’s a touristy city. But I can tell you that it’s mostly hard working families, and lots of people that enjoy working on their own cars 🙌🙌 Charlie thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
VarioRAM that came on the 993 is not related whatsoever to VarioCAM from the 968. VarioRAM is a variable intake length system, VarioCAM is a variable valve timing system. They are completely different systems and not comparable.
Correct, it was pointed out in a comment below. That’s what happens when you cut down a 40 min video to 8 minutes 😆. As far as feel, yes they’re very comparable….and that’s what people understand, the feel. James Robert’s thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
2:22 The steering wheel is no different either. It's the same one as in 944S2 final year with airbags. The only differences in interior is the clock and the door panel upper edge.
Correct 💯💯 The other minor differences was the seat stitching pattern change in 1994, does it count? Gotta love the Porsche 968’s! 🚀💯 SpeedFlap thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
@@HernanSpeed +1 for the stitching pattern. We transaxle fans take it really seriously. ;-) After 6 years with a 944S2 convertible, I thought about upgrading to a 968 for a long long time. Decided that it was not worth the difference, so I went buying a 928GTS as the more serious "upgrade". What should I say... couldn't give away the 944 since it is so much different and I would have missed it. So I am finally living with the S2 for 25 years and the GTS for 19 years now. The 968 was the brother in between that I never had but always wanted.
It’s a great deal IF all the maintenance is up to date! Get it inspected before buying, and make sure it’s a well taken care of 968. If it checks out, it’s a GOOO! 💯💯👊👊
In Germany, all cars need to pass MOT inspection to be registered. We don’t have a nationwide equivalent here in the USA….if it rolls, chances are it’s good to go in many states. In Florida, we don’t even have emissions tests. So, lots of cars are sold and driven with serious deferred maintenance…and the prices reflect this.
Most of these were great daily driver’s back when they were new, they still can be 💯💯 But being a collector car now, daily abuses are best left to more common cars. This car belongs in a secure garage protected from the elements, so you can enjoy on weekends 🚀🚀 Thanks for watching! 👊👊
Yes, and the 3000gt had even more than the 300zx… both needed 2 turbos to have the extra HP. I used to love the 300zx back in the day, in black of course. Unfortunately very few are still in nice condition today, people just didn’t take care of them Doug Antelman thanks for watching! 🔥🔥

...dont know a lot of serious german people in miami.....mostly they leave Germany because they dont like to work or they have problems with tax or think life is better with influence business. But your report is typical US ......surface report.. absolutely empty sentences. Better switch of than on. Its nothing about serious comment about cars (like this). I also drive a 968 since 5 years! Fast......really fast!
Lots of Germans are buying Real Estate in Miami as investors, most are purchased cash. I’d say that only the very affluent Germans are coming here, Miami is one of the most expensive places in the world. The Porsche 968 is one of my all time favorite Porsche’s, the values are getting up there….so no more deals like before
Let’s clear something up. The 968 is not a 944 basically. The 944 is the Audi Porsche. The 968 is completely a Porsche built 968, so a true Porsche. Totally different in built and set up, compared to the 944. That must be corrected and outspoken.
I think it’s difficult to draw hard and fast lines when comparing this transaxle series from the 924, 944, and 968, given its iterative design spanning more than a decade. The 968 was a substantial redesign of the 944, but it was also its clear successor with numerous similarities. In fact, the designer of the 924, Harm Lagaaij, left Porsche in 1977, only to be later recalled back to Porsche in 1989 to design the 968, so one could argue the 968 is more connected to the “Audi car” you’re referencing, which really was more the 924… although built by Audi, it was still “designed” by Porsche. So again, it’s hard to draw lines in the sand. The 944 deviated from the 924’s Audi engine, with one truly built by Porsche. The 944 rolling chassis were built by Audi in Neckarsulm, then shipped to Stuttgart, where Porsche finished production with the engine and drivetrain. I will admit that it was with the 968 that “full” production was moved to Stuttgart, but they are all connected in some way with Porsche helming the designs.
I know what you mean. It’s the way it’s edited (original cut is much slower & longer). Unfortunately, videos need to be edited in such a way for RUclips’s algorithm to push it to larger audiences. Hopefully in the future, RUclips will change the way it recommends videos Marco Carvalho thanks for watching! 🔥🔥 And the feedback!

Thanks man, I told you I’d get it done ✅ Still learning to shoot videos, not so easy
I’ve loved the 968 ever since it came out, theirs still nothing like them on the road! 💥🚀🚀

@@HernanSpeed I'm sure it will keep going. Built to last. Really enjoyed the video 👍
Really interested to see the value of these in the next decade. I just bought one with 223k miles and it drives like it has 50k miles.

Spot on! I have owned several 968’s, both cabs and coupes, and they are incredible! My favorite driving car of all time!
The 968 is a true Porsche that gets cooler every year! 💯👊👊
You know it! 🚀🚀 Thanks for watching brother! 👊👊

We’ll be flying to Miami on Labor Day. Hope to see plenty of Porsches out there. 👍🏽

Thanks for another great video. Just one little thing that caught my attention. 968s have Variocam, 993s have Varioram. Different things.
Correct 💯💯, they feel very similar considering they’re very different engines. Most understand the Varioram term, maybe I’ll do a more technical video on it

Yes but Variocam became the basis for Variocam plus which was used in the 996 and I am not sure but maybe 997 too.

CORRECT! 💯💯🚀🚀🚀
Dave Hebel thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
As a cab owner didn’t know seats recline. Good to know.
Prices are reasonable for the moment, but I see them going way up as people start realizing how fun they are 😎

Do the 968s have the same back window issues (missing parts) that you mentioned in the 928s?
The hatch design is different in the 968/944….the glass is actually bigger. The rear window can separate from the frame, this can make it noisy. Also sometimes only one side will lock-in, this can cause lots of noises at the rear. Check out @NC944ER RUclips’s channel, he’s got some great videos on it! 👊🦾🦾

Nice!! It’s great to have a few sets of wheels, I love the 3 piece 3.6 turbo 18”s on the 968, looks incredible! But I gotta admit, the 16’s are better for the potholes here in Miami. Wheels make a huge difference in these cars, totally changes up the look.

2:22 The steering wheel is no different either. It's the same one as in 944S2 final year with airbags. The only differences in interior is the clock and the door panel upper edge.

@@HernanSpeed +1 for the stitching pattern. We transaxle fans take it really seriously. ;-)
After 6 years with a 944S2 convertible, I thought about upgrading to a 968 for a long long time.

I’m looking at one now. Should I drop the hammer?? 1993, 93k miles, amazing condition, $18k
It’s a great deal IF all the maintenance is up to date! Get it inspected before buying, and make sure it’s a well taken care of 968. If it checks out, it’s a GOOO! 💯💯👊👊
How are they so cheap😭 in Germany they cost between 25-50k
In Germany, all cars need to pass MOT inspection to be registered. We don’t have a nationwide equivalent here in the USA….if it rolls, chances are it’s good to go in many states. In Florida, we don’t even have emissions tests. So, lots of cars are sold and driven with serious deferred maintenance…and the prices reflect this.
@@HernanSpeed oh thanks for the info
It is a good collector car but, I wouldn't try daily'ing it.
Most of these were great daily driver’s back when they were new, they still can be 💯💯 But being a collector car now, daily abuses are best left to more common cars. This car belongs in a secure garage protected from the elements, so you can enjoy on weekends 🚀🚀

Yes, and the 3000gt had even more than the 300zx… both needed 2 turbos to have the extra HP. I used to love the 300zx back in the day, in black of course. Unfortunately very few are still in nice condition today, people just didn’t take care of them

I see where you’re coming from. Thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
