Even though he had such a terrible childhood and youth, he tried to be as good as he could. A misunderstood man who got killed at the end. A boxer is not only defined by his skills, but also by his personality and story, that's what makes a good boxer great.

I believe it was the publics preception of Liston that allowed Ali to reach such grand heights. Had liston not been perceived the way he was, as an unwanted fighter/champ, ali fighting him wouldn't have had such an impact. .
In other words, without liston there to be the villain, there is no hero to step forward.. while it is unfortunate, it was destiny.

Easily my favourite fighter of all time. The most feared fighter to ever live, bro people would run to the other side of the street when they saw sonny walking down the road. His natural character put together with all the rumours about him, him being arrested over 100 times, his affiliations with the mob all just made him a terror to the public and boxing world. Once sonny got into a brawl outside a bar and single handedly beat 8+ men all by himself, when the police got there it took more than 6 officers to restrain him and they put 2 handcuffs on him. Liston was really about that life he even beat a cop and threw him into a trash can one time, then stole his hat and gun and then ran lol. He was an absolute monster and it pisses me off how underrated he is. Most “boxing fans” don’t know anything about him and just believe he’s some bum who Ali beat. In my opinion both of the Ali fights seemed fake, I’ve watched them over so many times nothing adds up

@@Kimbo67 I may be one of the few but I think the pre fight where Ali was continously annoying Liston got to him mentally. I don't think it was fake since Ali has done numerous similar things travelling back making others walk into the punch. I do however think Liston gave up mentally. Physically he could have pushed but I don't think he wanted to as seeing as the media would still hate him. But yh just my opinion who knows. All I can say is he was a great fighter non the less and also a great human unfortunately he was used by ppl close to him and abused by ppl he didn't even know.

@@david.amuiki It's everything. The media continuously produced negative hit pieces on him. The public didn't want to accept him as their champion. The cops memorized him to harass him. And at the same time he was unfortunately involved with the mob, or the mafia as you call it.
Still, I think he genuinely lost in his fight against Ali, because to me it looked like he tried to get back up but couldn't. I know everyone saw that Ali's punch did not look like a punch meant to KO an opponent. But I think Liston went down because it's the kind of punch that may not necessarily be thrown powerfully (and Sonny Liston has taken punches far worse), but if you don't see it coming it will hit you much harder than it should and it will daze you. I think that's what happened.
