  • Hello you guys.. here is an update on my how I've been sealing decals/designs on my Starbucks cups. When using permanent vinyl it is NOT necessary to seal your designs/decals. But as we know, even if the vinyl is permanent, with time, it will eventually start to come off. This is why is seal my decals using Brite Tone from the Crystalac company. Brite Tone is a non toxic, non yellowing top coat. As you know, I no longer use epoxy for safety concerns. All cups that are coated on my channel are all sealed using Brite Tone.
    *THIS CUP WAS MADE FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY.. I DO NOT SELL THESE CUPS.
    *** IN THE VIDEO I PUT A PICTURE OF THE SATIN Brite Tone top coat. THE ONE I USE IS THE GLOSS FINISH... SORRY!

    I see you're just using your bare hand. How does that end up making your hand/skin feeling? Since with epoxy it leaves it really sticky and it's hard to clean off.

      Hello! Thanks so much 😊 for cups with just vinyl design I usually do about 5-6 coats. For glitter cups I usually do around 9-12 coats depending on the glitter type. For glitter cups I usually do glitter... 3 coats of brite tone. Sand . Two more coats of brite tone. Sand. Then I add my decals. Then continue coating until the cup is smooth. Sanding after every 3 coats. I hope this helps!

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 года назад

      Single layer decals can take anywhere from 4-6 coats . If you have a multilayered decal like the one in this video.. your looking at maybe 7-9 coats . It also depends on the type of vinyl you use. Some are thicker than others. For example... holographic vinyl is thicker than a permanent vinyl. Also different vinyl brands can have thicker or thinner vinyls. It also depends on the the glossy finish you want on your cup. It’s definitely a preference thing. More coats means more gloss. Sometimes I add a couple coats just for decal protection & sometimes I coat until my cup has a nice smooth glossy finish (: hope this helps !

      Hello.. so I accidentally put a picture of the satin one instead of the gloss one. I was actually using the gloss one. I always want a glossy finish on my cups so I’ve only purchased the gloss one.

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 года назад +5

      After 5-7 days the cups are okay for light use. The brite tone should only be added to the outside of your cup. I’m not so sure how you tasted chemicals . Maybe you mean smelled like chemicals? I’ve used a cup 5 days after my last coat and there isn’t a smell to it anymore at that point.

      Sorry for the late reply! Im so glad you were able to fix it! Brite tone is definitely very forgiving. A quick sand can get rid of any imperfections. The holes you mentioned sound like something people call orange peel. It resembles an actual orange peel with kind of inward holes everywhere. This tends to happen when the previous BT coat is too thick or it doesn't have enough dry time in between coats. hope this helps :) if you ever have any other question you can always message me on instagram. I have the gallon. Here is a guide that I pulled off the company’s Facebook group that explains the container size along with the amount of cups you can achieve with each container size . Of course it also depends on what types of cups your making since some cups take more coats than others but this gives you an idea.
      8oz container: 6 cups..cost per cup $3.67/cup
      Pint: 12 cups.. $2.92/cup
      Quart: 24 cups..$2.06/cup
      Gallon: 95 cups $1.33/cup (best value)

    • @MelissaCrafter

      Some people experience peeling so I recommend prepping the cup by sanding with a high grit sanding paper (400 grit) around the logos .. washing and drying . Then add your design & coating with brite tone.

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 года назад

      Yes prepping is an important step. Hydro flasks are usually powder coated so they would have to be stripped down (by sanding) to the stainless steel part or else the brite tone won’t adhere

    Will the decal ever be smooth and 100% under the poly or will you still feel the edges? I'd done 4 layers and it's still very rigid. Just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 года назад

      I used Brite Tone.... depending on the gloss finish you are going for, you can continue to coat until you no longer feel the decal. I usually coat until I can no longer feel the decal and the cup is 100% smooth. if you are feeling the edges you can try lightly spot sanding with 400 grit sanding paper. Run your finger through the cup and sand where ever you feel the decal . Hope this helps :)

    Hi Melissa how do you prevent streaking on the cups? How do you get them to look so smooth?

    • @MelissaCrafter
      @MelissaCrafter  4 года назад +2

      Hello ... thin coats is key to not having streaks on your cup. If your coats are too thick it doesn’t allow your cup to self level and it dries unevenly. If your coats are thin , after a couple minutes of spinning, the brite tone self levels... this gives off a smooth finish after each coat. Hope this helps (:

      With heavier cups , yes. I usually wrap electrical tape around the grip part of the turner and that keeps it from falling off .
