    Your potatoes look healthy and happy. I can also see that your onion leaves are dark and glossy, ideal to ensure a great harvest. As the plants gets bigger and the days of sunlight increase the leaves will start to straighten themselves out and grow more upright. Every green leave of the onion represents one onion layer on the bulb. Some advice for snails. If you want to get organically rid of them. I take two bricks and put them at the end of each row. I then place a plank on top of the bricks at night. The next day I just lift the plank and remove the snails attached to the plank. They go and hide under the plank when the sun gets to hot. You can use anything that comes to mind, even a broken flowerpot or an old container as long as they can hide under it. I have a bucket with salt water that I place them in. I planted white and purple cauliflower in my garden and strangely enough my purple cauliflower is far ahead of the white cauliflower in growth. If you want your white cauliflower heads not to turn yellow from the sun before harvest, lift the outer leaves and tie them over the flower heads so they can remain bleached. The entire cauliflower is edible. I chop up every single green stem in very small cubes and fry them with cooked rice that I cooked with a stock cube. I feel that after all the work that it is important not to let anything go to waste. Your garden looks amazing Ruben. Kudos for the beautiful beets. You are a champion beet grower. If you keep your beets for a while in your fridge after harvest the chill phase will make them even more sweeter. Beets planted in Autumn that grew during the cooler months has a higher sugar content than those grown in warmer weather. As soon as beets grow in warmer weather the starch contents get higher and they loose their sweetness. If you buy a packet of beets, remember to buy the packet with the small beets in them. The smaller the sweeter.

      Wow, thanks!! Learned something new today about onions, and also what to do with those snails.
      I planted onions but didn’t read up on them, so this is interesting about the leaves representing layers.
      I plant in my backyard in an estate and have wondered what my neighbours think when my mealies stalks peek over the wall 😂

    • @KristelViljoen
      @KristelViljoen 3 месяца назад

      @@SinaLouw when you transplant your tomatoes remember to plant them deep enough that they can hold themselves up. The hair on the stems of tomatoes turns into roots if you plant them a little bit above their actual roots. This ensure that the plants are more steady. I transplant my tomatoes twice. First in small pots. About two to three seedlings. I then choose the healthier plant, if they are about the same I use all of them. Then I transplant them into bigger pots and as soon as the plant it about 20 to 30cm I only then transplant them. That is when I plant the tomatoes a bit deeper into the soil that they "can stand their ground."

      Greetings! I’m glad you found the video helpful! It sounds like you have a fantastic plan for spring-cabbage, beans, and butternut are all great choices. I am also planning to plant the same! Sorry to hear about the birds getting to your spinach; they can be quite irritating! Maybe you should cover your spinach plants with bird netting to create a physical barrier. Just make sure that the net is securely anchored to prevent birds from getting underneath. I am sure that your garden is going to be full of wonderful veggies this season. Wishing you a bountiful harvest, and I’m always here if you need more tips. Keep on sowing and growing!

      @@melindamieny2389 My peas are in containers because the exact thing happened to me last year. I've put my peas next to a prefab wall so that the wall can draw heat. At Westpack is huge buckets for under 100 rand and I bought myself 3 black ones. If you buy buckets keep them black, all the other colours plastic damages so easily. I think the blend that makes them black are much stronger since they always last the longest. I went to the garbage dump site of the municipality and filled it with free organic matter, then soil and lastly I just topped it with compost. I'm so glad about your carrots. Mine is miniscule but I know they'll boom from 1 of Sept. Patience. I need to be patient. It's very good news since comming Oct you'll literally reap what you have sown and there is no feeling in the world better than getting a good harvest. Beet leaves are a great substitute for swiss chard. Just remember to only harvest the outer leaves. I make a beet salad with feta and wallnuts. Delicious. I wish you a great start, comming spring. Spring is def hussle time. Remember succession sowing since things tend to nibble on every plant start of spring because animals and insects had a long winter. The weather isn't predictable either. Sow after 2 weeks again and continue. If you have too many seedlings, barter, trade or give away. I give mine to neighbour's , staff at my husband's work and the people at the municipality dump. They have a thriving garden at the garden dumping site. Blessings and prosperity.

    Hurricane Beryl destroy my pac-choy, I have a few bell pepper , lettuce and tomato so I will be planting some kale, squash, broccoli, hot pepper and some more sunflower which don't seems to want to grow...some advice please ❤ 🇯🇲

    • @KristelViljoen
      @KristelViljoen 3 месяца назад

      Sunflowers doesn't like competing, not even with weeds. They do not like it if other plants shade them. Sunflowers release Allelopathic Chemicals that inhibits the growth of other plants nearby which gives you a very good idea that they are the type of flowers that stand alone. Sunflowers moves their heads, following the sun. That also gives you a very good clue that they need to stand in a spot where they can get the most sun. No shade, not a wall, tree or shrub. Which means most probably right in the middle of your garden. That is called heliotropism. Lastly they do well with a slow release fertilizer. They do not want it all at once. Just a little bit of food but for an extended period. They are like people who eat 6 to 8 small meals a day.

      Sad to hear that you have had lost your plants. Climate change means that this will be a regular occurrence. We are entering La Nina which means that South Africa will have a great rainy season. Economically that is great but it is important if you are growing in an area that have a high flood risk to either build high raised garden beds, or a keyhole garden. Put a French drain or channel drain in your garden. You can draw a contour map by watching where the high and low points is in your garden. If you dont know, look at the points towards where the water accumulated. At the low points, install a French drain. I just drive around in the neighborhood and look at where people dump building site rock debree. I then dig a trench and fill it with the rocks. (Otherwise it can become too costly if i have to buy dump rock.) You can also plant trees on the outline or outside your property. You can grow them from seed.

      I have a few asparagus plants. They are my first summer crop. Usually as soon as they are finger size I brake them off and eat them on the spot. I always find it etremely hard to leave some for our family dinner. It takes a while for them to grow from seed. I encourage you to be patient and wait for them to sprout. They are so tiny, sometimes you will miss it. Just remember that you can only harvest the third year. Don't let it discourage you. It's more than worth it.

      You are rushing. When was your last frost date in 2023? Yours would be late, very late August or even early Sept. Mine was mid August. What you can do is throw as much as possible leaves in the spot where you want to plant them. You can collect them in your neighborhood or at your municipality garden dump site. Throw a huge plastic sheet, tarp or cardboard boxes cover it after you applied some water, put some weight on it such as bricks or rocks and wait until your last frost date. Lift the cover. Then dig over the soil. Let the dig over soil stand for a week and then plant. Johannesburg is cold. Very cold. I would suggest second week in September or even 1st October. Popcorn want plenty of sun, water.and heat.
