  • Can my non-equestrian husband pass these horse-handling challenges and handle our horses in an emergency? In this video, we put him to the test! Today, you'll learn some of the critical skills needed to handle horses, especially in emergency situations. Things like haltering a horse correctly, knots every equestrian should know, how to lead horses over difficult terrain, and more. Each test is designed to assess my husband's preparedness and ensure the safety of both him and our horses on our adventure traveling the country with our horses full-time. However, the things I teach him are applicable to every equestrian. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned horse owner, you'll pick up valuable tips for your own horse handling skills.
Check out Collin's other challenge video here!

Yes, this is really important, also trailer loading must be practicing. Your husband learns fast.😍

What I do for the quick release knot is the same cross over, start to pull it through, then actually pull the part of the rope the horse is connected to and a particular side of the loop you just made (because you didn’t fully pull it through) and it just tightens, it’s super fast! ❤

I love how you kept the part of you doing wrong the quick release knot. You truly are an amazing person who keep it real here❤

I had a cat travel over 30 miles cross country to get back home. I had to move and I wasn't supposed to have pets at the new place, so I brought him to a dairy farmer I knew who said the cat could live there. I brought the cat in a closed up cardboard box in my car. That cat found his way back to the place he knew as home. His paws were raw and he looked like heck and how on earth he did it I'll never know. I kept the cat he lived to be 18 years old. You might want to check your old property for Smeagol ?

Thank you for all the great tips! I've only been working around horses twice daily for just shy of a year, and have been watching your videos and those of a couple other channels occasionally since I started, and while I'm comfortable with the horses and can handle their hooves and get them into and out of trailers, I am still learning so much! Thank you! 🥰🙏

I watched the PBS special on North American horses and learned that Appaloosas have a white sclera. That explains why Tucker always appears to me to be so expressive with his eyes.😅😅😳😅

You can tie the quick release knot the same as you did, but if you twist it the other way (before you put the bunny ear through) it will work. Instead of twisting from thumbs down to thumbs up. Grab the rope in the same place, but twist from thumbs up to thumbs down. Then continue as normal. Hopefully that made sense.

while colin was walking with ruarck:
"really get after him one, assertively get after him"
I think in the moment Colin may have been unclear on what exactly "get after him" means lol
I as a viewer was certainly unclear on what "get after him" meant
like does that mean push him away with your hands? push him away with your shoulders? does it mean walk faster? it's vague feedback so maybe more specific motions and movements would be helpful in terms of teaching colin

Carmella: This is for emergency situations, so just act like I'm not here
Also Carmella: wait before you start let me untangle and properly orient the rope halter for you
    XDDD

As watching you demonstrate to husband how to tie a release knot was thinking "What? That's not what I do." Now I feel better. HA! I usually test mine before walking off - just in case. - I like your hat.-- Good instruction. -- Your husband is a keeper!

The first way you tied the knot was perfectly fine, you just needed to cinch it to the wall! I do it that way all the time and the only reason it comes loose is if I dont cinch it

Carmella, what you do for the quick release knot is you slide the knot up to the bars or the thing you are tying it to so it can’t flip!

Do not ever tie a horse to the stall door. I know of a situation in which that went the absolute worst case scenario it could.

On horse leading: I'm in my 70s and have worked with horses all my life. I've got a 1 year old filly who leads perfectly on her own, a child can manage walking with her. But twice a day, I have to lead her and her mom in and out of the pasture and she always wants to be ahead of her mother. I generally did the "stop and back up" routine, but it wasn't really getting very quick results. Then I saw this video ⤵️ by Herm Gailey and in two sessions, it had worked.
