You are correct. No one at high school or college or career development will tell you this because they don't believe it -- although it is obvious. They base their opinion on studying someone who "made it" and saying "that's how you do it!!!" The guy who "made it" just gave them the short hand version and left out the first 10 years as well. There is no "path to success." It's a cross country hike.

    • @Olivia-W
      @Olivia-W 3 года назад +15

      Yep.
You only see the success at the end- the end of a 15 year struggle with a bankrupcy, divorce, and two depressive slumps mixed in. And you only see the current good parts, not the running anxiety, juggling two jobs, and migraines.
The key to success is just never stop trying. Embrace the suck! Live on. Be as reliable of a human as you can be.

    • @Poop-nu1so
      @Poop-nu1so 3 года назад +1

@@Olivia-W "embrace the suck" is also 100% true, but doesn't have a good ring to it. Maybe that's the problem, people need to realize that sometimes the path to success isn't always pretty, and is littered with mistakes, failures, compromises, and sacrifices along the way.

High school/college/career development anything are so fucking full of bullshit. It's as if they're trained to give the exact wrong advice to young people. I had a college career counselor tell me that I was going to have a very hard time finding a job in the city I was in and that the only way to "make it" in fields I was interested in was to blow thousands of dollars on going abroad, teach English in abusive schools, and hope/pray I make a nepotism connection somewhere/somehow that fast tracks my career and take me back to the US. In hindsight, it's pretty clear that she was projecting her own shitty life decisions onto me.
Years and a stable career later, I look back and laugh/know better now, but at the time, this was very distressing to be told this! I was just about to graduate, was very stressed about getting my degree and then into the job market, and I thought I had made a horrible mistake. I was lucky to have supportive friends/mentors who knew better and told me that this lady was full of shit, but a lot of others aren't so lucky. Everyone's path is going to be different, but if there's one piece of advice I can give with absolute certainty, it's never go to these counselors for advice!

27:45 gradient descent to a local minimum. In fact, this is what the whole video is about. Trying things, seeing how it goes, observing where you see yourself, if it is closer or further from where you want to imagine your ideal, snffing out routes from each new checkpoint to get you closer to where you need to be, to what fulfills you. Unless you are inert from depression or the like, it is what we're all doing all the time to some degree. What's the best algorithm? What is most likely to lead to success for most people most of the time? There may be too many variables to say for definite. We're all somewhat relying on serendipity. You can take massive random hops to different nations and different jobs, or subtely iterate toward something you feel you're into - like hardware engineering. Having good coaches and guidance maybe more generally applicable (blame the parents!), or perhaps something else. Ideas are here needed.

I found what I could do with teaching in foreign countries right out of college. I apparently was pretty good at it, but at a smaller scale. I've been pushed out of it in America because of high level certifications that, really after doing the job, don't fully make sense for the level they are at, and then seeing some of the teachers in public schools these days.
Instead of trying to go through that crap system first, I've found an ESL masters is pretty cheap compared to most full bachelors degrees and teaching degrees, so that I'm doing rather than nothing.
But damn I feel that do nothing thing, but I don't feel as if it's because of not wanting to, it doesn't help when someone says about a unique thing you can do "How are you going to make money with that?"
That's perhaps the worst thing I've heard people say, and I think it's probably limited the market so horribly.

Louis, I started my journey at a recording studio too! I never became a world-famous producer, but I did learn of my love for learning different software tools. After that and about 4 or 5 different jobs, I now design electronical systems for a living and it's proven to be more rewarding for me than any other job I've had. I never had a clear direction on academics or career prospects and I never thought I'd land myself in a career that's actually perfectly suited for me.

You really hit the nail on the head.
When I was in high school, they really hammered into our heads and set up the expectation that straight out of school, everyone had to go to college and would be realized professionals within 10 years.
I distinctly remember a few weeks before college/university signups would close, one of my teachers saying "If you haven't yet settled on a career, you should be worried".
Due to different plans, I didn't apply anywhere. I was going to move to the US with the intention of taking a gap year while I work, and /then/ apply somewhere there. Literally weeks before my planned departure, an abrupt change of plans resulted in me staying here.
High school was already stressful enough besides pressuring everyone into figuring out what it is they wanted. It was an internal battle I dealt with for years. So with plans abruptly changed, having not the slightest clue as to what I wanted to be, I fell into a bad depression for numerous reasons, my school experience being the main one.
I developed recurring nightmares about school and of all of my classmates being ahead of me which I still have to this day, 4 years later. Especially now that most of them have graduated.
At some point along the way I decided to ditch college altogether, especially after learning what a scam it is in the US (so I guess I dodged a bullet there). I went into high school partly thinking of taking some kind of engineering career. By now I wanted to be a 2D/3D artist (have been doing the former as a hobby for years), a field that is extensively available for free online, rendering most schools obsolete. I've been doing some freelance work since then and have found that I /could/ make a decent living out of it, although I'm still battling my depression and self-esteem issues which have prevented me from working any harder than a crawl. I /have/ also successfully repaired a couple of things myself, having taken some PC maintenance classes in school. So device repair is also very much in the cards for me, just not something I've pursued seriously yet. But I do find some enjoyment in taking things apart and seeing how they work and putting it back together and having it work again (even if I've broken some things in the process, ahaha)
I will say I'm very envious of people with supportive parents that truly understand that the social norm is not the way to go, and everyone should find their own way at their own pace, time and method (and through hard work, of course). My mother, while very supportive, would often be distressed that I didn't know what I wanted, often saying unhelpful things like "I don't understand. If you like rockets, why don't you just study that?" As if being an avid soccer fan meant someone wanted to be a soccer /player/. It doesn't work that way. Then again, she dropped out of high school and never pursued anything big of her own. I can understand her projection and concern over me turning out the same, but I've hardly received any meaningful advice from her that didn't give me more anxiety and FUD.
I have a very complicated relationship with my mom that I'm really just trying to find a way to leave, even if for some time.
Anyways, not sure if you'll even read this, but thank you so much for this video, Louis. Came for the Apple drama, stayed for the life lessons :) I will for sure save this and look back at it every now and then. You really are an inspiration.

Thank you sir for your videos and talks. I'm gonna start doing some stuff and see where it goes. I think a large problem for myself is that I have been exposed so much to media that has "the chosen one" in it whether it be a video game or a movie or book and everything is laid out for the hero with a set path, thus giving me a mentality of "the path will open up when it shows itself" rather than "I need to take a step toward somewhere and see where I go" - I'm going to work on doing the latter rather than this terrible mentality of the former. Thanks for helping give some clarity that is much needed.

I left it thinking I hated it and became a mechanic my dream job and hated it I feel everyone has a calling and it's up to you to take it. I really appreciate the message and your story you shared. It truly is a paradox, isn't it?
It's important to do something rather than nothing to find your place in the world, but if you don't feel like doing anything and end up doing nothing, then will you ever really feel like doing something?
It's a viscous cycle, only interrupted by YOU deciding to do SOMETHING regardless of whether or not you want to. You can't live a life worth living without first creating a life worth living, for yourself.

So, I was one of those people who was generally supported by my family in the direction I was planning to go. I got decent schooling growing up, and then went to college.
    It was a mistake.
Or, it wasn't, but I was wrong about my goals. Those plans were made based on the things I thought would work and a good part of that was pleasing the family who was supportive. Then I got a few years into college, and it just wasn't working. I did well, but it just wasn't worth it. I was treading water instead of changing my goals to work with how I had changed.
So I left college, learned a trade, and now my life is getting a lot better. It's got plenty of issues, family being one of them, but it's better now because I'm moving towards something.
I think this is one of the places where people will get that. You don't need to know what the hell you're doing, or have an exact explanation for how everything will work down the line. You've just got to move, find what works, and do that. When that stops working, you do the process again. I think too many people expect you to have your whole life planned by the time you're in your late teens. It leads to this crippling fear that allowing people to make their own choices will ruin everything, so they need to be confined to a "safe" list of options to protect them.

While my own career path has been quite rocky due to multiple factors, I have a relatively similar path - I started as a telemarketer because it was easy to find a job doing that. Did that for a couple years, then reached a point where I just couldn't anymore so I used that phone sales experience to get phone-based customer service jobs, which then evolved into tech support, which then turned to doing IT tech support for companies...and after getting some certifications, I run the IT team for a furniture manufacturer.
When I was 19 and working those telemarketing jobs I was thinking of opening up a computer sales/repair shop with a friend but now I know that if we'd gone through with that idea I would have locked myself into a career I would have ended up hating.
The experiences I went through and the things I've learned during my 20s showed me what I was meant to be doing. Public education did not prepare me at all for the "adult world"

Employment has TWO aspects (viewpoints). First, what valuable skills do you have? Second, who will pay for you to use some of those skills? Economics and social norms ultimately determine how busy you will be and how much money each transaction will deliver. By going out and "doing something," you allowed potential customers to see your valuable skills; you allowed each customer to estimate how your skills might be applied to his life. These two aspects are similar to OH- ions in water meeting H30+ ions to become two water molecules. If you sit at home, the water is frozen and the ions never meet.
If you are employed by another, you MUST understand that he cannot afford to hire you if you are not making him money. While you are on his property, he is somewhat responsible for your health and welfare. In addition to your salary, he must pay employment taxes, social security, unemployment, rent for your workspace, insurance, etc. If you make a mistake and break something, he is responsible. If you cost him more than you earn him, he cannot afford to keep you. He cannot afford to break even because eventually you WILL make a mistake and he must use what you have profited him already to pay for that.
