  • Johnny Cash's magnificent talents as an interpreter of Americana are especially suited to the narration of this recording. Johnny's own album, Ride This Train is a stirring combination of song and narrative, unique in its feeling for the American scene. Composer of many songs, Johnny has won world-wide fame as an artist with a deep understanding of the lives and dreams of his fellow citizens. Johnny Cash first began singing while working on his family's farm near Kingsland Arkansas. He achieved local fame for his talents in high school, and continued his performances in impromptu shows during his military service. Soon he began to compose his haunting and dramatic songs. After his discharge, Johnny enrolled in a radio and television school, but a lack of finances forced him to change his plans. While working as a salesman, Johnny arrived in Memphis, Tennessee, the center of country and western music. He sought out the director of a small recording company, obtained an audition and was asked to record some of his own songs. Johnny's sincerity as a composer and as a performer won him immediate success, and he was soon signed by Columbia Records.

My father was the recording engineer. They spent additional days waiting at the bottom of the canyon, for the storm. The good Lord provided them one while on location, at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont the next month to meet the release date of the album.

Johnny Cash signed to Columbia Records in 1958. In 1961 he recorded this spoken word bit for Andre Kostelanetz's take on the classic Grand Canyon Suite (also released on Columbia). In August of 1961 Cash's daughter Tara was born and in December he starred in a neo-noir crime film called Five Minutes to Live.

The Grand Canyon is not millions of years old.
    Neither is the earth.
The Canyon was formed by the water of the great flood.
