I had the same fear about polar bears when I made a solo visit in August 2013. My only encounters with the wild in Longyearbyen were the wild birds, diving down on my head. The midnight sun was also a surreal experience, although it was noticeably colder than for you. Even in August I experienced light snow, and felt like a Scottish winter. The majority of the residents in summer escape to sunnier climates.
I booked an excursion to visit the Glacier, but on our bumpy dinghy ride out (holding for dear life) they decided the rough seas were unsafe to continue.

15:45 A minor correction. The USSR did not build Pyramiden. It used to be a Swedish owned mine but the USSR bought it in 1927. There are similar stories with the other major ghost town and the two current settlements. Svea was Swedish before it was bought by Norway, Barentsburg was Dutch before it was bought by the USSR and Longyearbyen American before it was bought by Norway.

First time watching your channel (via a RUclips recommendation). I never imagined that the “Midnight Sun” described actually bright-as-day-conditions at 2 or 3 am! (I thought it would be like twilight or something.) Great video-super high quality and very interesting! 👍
