'Ha yer got a loit boi' may have been his most successful song but probably not his best. He wrote many clever, perceptive songs describing and documenting life of that era as he saw and lived it. He made his personal contribution to folk-history. Other people like Martin Carthy performed reworkings of old folk songs, which is fine, but Alan Smethurst composed new folk songs, which is quite special. If you read the comments it's clear that many people love and have been touched by these evocative songs.
