      What do you mean “blatantly copied”? He wrote both songs anyway.

      Yes because he made a bit of money out of it, tried to replicate it " copy" and it failed to sell.
      So that was the end of him, he was simply a one hit wonder

      @@adrinathegreat3095 That's not really correct because at one time he had two songs in the top ten simultaneously, outselling the Beatles and the Stones. 'Ha yer got a loit boi' may have been his most successful song but probably not his best. He wrote many clever, perceptive songs describing and documenting life of that era as he saw and lived it. He made his personal contribution to folk-history. Other people like Martin Carthy performed reworkings of old folk songs, which is fine, but Alan Smethurst composed new folk songs, which is quite special. If you read the comments it's clear that many people love and have been touched by these evocative songs.
