- Lufthansa Trip Report flying from San Francisco to Frankfurt onboard one of the Lufthansa Boeing 747-8i on a lovely winter day.
A comfortable flight from San Francisco to Frankfurt onboard the Queen of the Skies, the Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 intercontinental. The flight was fully booked, and there was not a single empty seat, but even that way, this 10h+ flight was still ok thanks to the bug cabin of the Boeing 747.
About our route, we took off from San Francisco towards the Pacific Ocean. A few moments after departure we made an almost 180° turn, heading northeast and started our route to Frankfurt. We flew over California, Nevada, Idaho, and Montana and we entered Canada.
Already in the night with everyone sleeping the most amazing thing happened: I looked outside the window and spotted a huge Aurora Borealis. It was there, clearly visible, but nobody saw it. The movies were more interesting.
When it disappeared it was time to try to sleep for a while, always with the alarm set for the Sunrise. The Sunrise took place when were overflying the United Kingdom and lasted for around 30 minutes. The crew was about to start the breakfast service so, at least for once, I wasn't the only one enjoying the Sunrise at 36.000 ft.
We continued towards The Netherlands and from there we flew on direct course to Frankfurt, where we landed on runway 07R, on time, after a nice approach. Over the Rhein River.
About the onboard service, if you are a frequent viewer of the channel you probably know that I have criticized Lufthansa a lot in the recent past for their poor catering service. Well, today I must say that there are some sights of improvement. The meal was bigger than on recent flights, there were 2 meal options, the salad was a proper salad (not just lettuce) and overall, everything was tasty. Special mention to the chicken option: it was really good. Probably the best meal I had on Lufthansa. As you can see, I asked to try the pasta option, so I can give you a better inside, and I must say it wasn't as good as the chicken. It was good, nothing wrong, but the chicken was a higher level.
Around 1 hour and a half before landing the crew served the breakfast. In this case, it was a quite big cheese & vegetable baguette, an oats bar and some fresh fruit. As for drinks, they served coffee & juice. It was not a warm breakfast but it was not bad at all.
All in all, a great flight with Lufthansa from San Francisco to Frankfurt. Looks like Lufthansa realized that they could not keep their clients what such a bad service they had until my last flight with them. This is the standard that should be applied to all the US flights, but I guess it is only for the west coast ones.

I'm almost 70 now. I've been to 59 countries and 48 states but I have to admit I don't have an 11 hour flight in me anymore. I think I'll just stay home.
I would say the majority of the people of the world would love to have your travelling experince when they reach 70 :)

I'm really happy that you had a grear experience with Lufthansa.
They have an amazing fleet that every airplane fan would love to experience... but the onboard service has a lot to improve... come on! at least they could put it at the same level as KLM or Air France...
I was on older version of Lufthansa 🇩🇪 in 1979 Cleveland Ohio to Frankfurt i believe it was a 747-4 but not sure in was way younger 😉but I'm truly enjoyed flying on her

Wonderful report, especially the Northern Lights! I’ve flown on Lufthansa many times - you cannot swoon over their service, but it’s good and professional. Munich is a FAR better choice for transfer than Frankfurt. I’ve not yet been on the 747-8, but my first 747 was in 1972! TWA, JFK-LAX. The return flight was on a TriStar L-1011 from SFO.

Definitely love the 747-8! I’ve flown on all versions going back to the earliest with PAA and TWA. When Korean purchased their first 747-8, the first route served was SFO-ICN. They would occasionally also fly HKIA-ICN too which was convenient for me while living in Macau for ten years. Wonderful airplane. I still check out where it is flying now with an eye to taking a new route if it doesn’t deviate too much from where I’m going.

For those who say that the 747 is outdated.... the 747 NEVER GETS OUTDATED. There might be modern beautiful flights and they are really good...but the 747 has its special place in the skies. No denails on that!!!

The -8 is such a big change from the -4 and the -3 and the -1 which all rattled and roared and had echoing cabins .. at any rate the ones on which I flew did. Great video again!

What a time to be alive to see those aurora! Oh! the landing was a positive landing (hard landing on purpose), due to wet runway i believe. All in all nice flight report! can't wait for more!

I think the interior at Lufthansa always looks like it's from the 90s
SFO airport is pretty spectacular due to how much natural light it gets. The northern lights are really iconic. That little area where the control tower & other building is, @ FRA airport, is pretty cool looking.

Thank you for posting this video! I feel as if I have just taken a trip! I often go to the San Francisco Airport shoreline and watch this flight come in and go out. There's a lot of hiking trails right along the bay waters by the airport there. And yes I've flown many 747s over the past 40 years actually feel safer on that plane than any other. Pilots will tell you it's a dream to fly. They're a dream to land, and taking off, they go up 'like a kite' I prefer 4 engines when flying over the ocean-Greg in California

I was fortunate in my youth to fly to Germany to visit my relatives often. I would fly out of SFO to FRA then connect to MUC. The flying time was the same then as it is now 50 years later. Progress!!
Well, the speed of sound hasn't change in the last 50 years either... and that's the speed limit for all the commercial jets (except the Concorde) :))
The huge progress has come in much less noise, less contamination, less fuel burn...
Flown into Frankfurt many times on 747's. Always great flights.

Lufthansa's service has declined a lot in the last years... I criticize it a lot in my videos... but what many don't know is that I was a complete Lufthansa fanboy around 6-7 years ago when I started this channel. They were offering full warm meals on European flights over 2h30min, which was something nobody was doing at the moment already... Then some kind of new management came and they started to erase all those services and slowly became what they are now... just an overpriced airline for the service they offer.
Will I continue flying Lufthansa? For sure, not for the service, but because they have the most exciting fleet in Europe (and probably the whole world): B747, A380, A340...
Back before RUclips I thought I was the only one who thought the big planes were wonderful and mysterious. Might have to change a tire or two after that landing..

I used to fly a lot when I was younger. But I've developed a serious fear of flying. With driving to a destination, I'm in control. But this vid kind of makes me feel at ease. Like I might be able to do it again.

I will be flying to Frankfurt from San Francisco on this giant in September of this year. It is nice to see what it will look like before my trip. I would usually fly on other airlines such as KLM and others but very few times on Lufthansa and a handful of times on a 747.
I fly so much on Lufthansa for the same reason: their unique fleet (B747, A343, A346, A380...). At the moment they will have the same fleet as others, I guess we'll stop having so much Lufthansa on the channel.

Wow!! how fortunate were you to see such treat before sleeping. I don't think a single soul bothered to pic outside. Many people are insensitive to nature and others are tired. We used to live in British Columbia, Canada the town of Elkford right in the Rocky Mountains and one night I was awaken by the Northern Lights so strong like dancing in different colours illuminating the mountains and our bedroom. It was an incredible experience. Wonderful trip report, Thank you so much.

Omg the purser sounded so happy. They made a fast turn around in sfo regarding catering cleaning crew change etc with the delay.

@@OnBoardHD For a lot of people food seems to be one of the most important criteria for the evaluation of an airline. Fly Emirates, there you get escellent food, everybody loves Emirates.

The views were amazing. The aircraft is incredible. The crew seemed very nice and professional...however, the food looked not very good. For whatever reason, Lufthansa has chosen to save money by providing lower cost food in minimal quantity. They cannot consider themselves to be a premium brand airline with those food options. The cabin on the 747 needs refreshing. The outside of the aircraft looked weathered and worn, also in need of refreshing. I would definitely fly on the 747 given any opportunity. SFO is my hometown airport. That was a really long takeoff roll.

I agree with what you say about LH... it clearly needs an update in almost everything... It looks like they are stuck in the 2010s and they feel comfortable there. But of course, with a much lower catering quality than what they had back in those years...

Buen trabajo el de DLH, aunque si uno se fija en la mayoría de las aerolíneas (No Low cost), el servicio es prácticamente estándar y siempre vas a encontrar el mismo libreto. Un buen detalle sería y un desayuno caliente 😉
La verdad es que un desayuno caliente cambiaría mucho la percepción del servicio recibido... También algo mucho más intangible como la presentación en la bandeja es importante. Vease por ejemplo como cuidan los detalles en Emirates o Qatar. La bandeja y platos que se ofrecen en LH se ven poco apetecibles desde el principio...
Ganando millones como vuelven a hacer ahora... bien podrían destinar algo a mejorar el servicio a bordo.
I flew with Lufthansa Airlines about a year ago but it’s wasn’t a 747 a twin engine airplane. When I finished the bus tour in Italy and departed from Frankfurt, Germany. It’s was hard getting through the gates using the passport security but finally made it to the plane and flew back to San Francisco.
Mmm Maybe it was one of the Lufthansa A330... Although this route must be on the limit of its range.

This flight was pretty special!! It was so cool for you to see the northern lights. The food looked good !! I love a veggie sandwich but I don't know about having it for breakfast!!! I definitely would have eaten it though on such a long flight!!

It's good to hear how loud the machine is. No comparison to the A 380, which is simply the better aircraft compared to the 747 in terms of seating comfort.
In terms of comfort, yes, there's nothing like the A380. But flying the B747 is just amazing as well :)
When you landed in Frankfurt liked listening to the announcements in German. I like the way the German language sounds. I wish I could speak fluent German.
