  • When businesses or organizations experience consistent success, they tend to get complacent. It's crucial that these companies--especially in retail--always be searching for ways to evolve and improve. By constantly looking to your worthy rivals, you can prevent being undermined in your industry.

  • @Dil.Careem

The problem with being the best is that it can create unrealistic expectations, put excessive pressure on oneself, and breed a culture of comparison and competition. Striving for excellence is admirable, but it's important to recognize that perfection is unattainable and can lead to burnout and disengagement.
It's essential to focus on personal growth and development, rather than external validation or competition with others. To avoid the problems of being the best, prioritize self-care, set realistic goals, and cultivate a growth mindset that values progress over perfection. Remember, being the best is not the goal, but rather becoming your best self.

Those who fail to adapt are far more likely to fail rather than succeed. It is an extremely difficult task to know when we should stay the same or change.
I find people are all too willing to notice change and point fingers at others, and it is a rare trait to find people willing to accept there is something they can change to make things better for them. The more open minded a business is towards change I believe the more likely they are to have longevity.

More than 30 years ago my grandma started growing gladiolas in the garden. 30 years ago she had thousands and my father sold them. The number slowly grew to hundred thousands, my father became known in the country by beating the competition around here. Now he's over 65 and he wants to pass it to us three brothers. But as the youngest I was born into this big business and had no idea about competition. We can't continue what our father did, we either improve or lose to the others.

Interesting that I had this video rerecommended after listening to "Are You Distracted by Other People's Success?" from May 21, 2021. In that one he discusses how BlackBerry failed because it tried to add Apple like services. In this one he talks about coffee shops that fail because they did not add Starbucks like services. 20/20 rearview mirror is always easy to see why something fails. My question is how do you thread the needle of the future to say our product is good and just needs to be made better for our market and stay focused to get ahead or when we need to look at the competition realize our product is not what our customers will want in compared to them and better ourselves. How do we act like Apple and not care about Microsoft but still see the things they do right to innovate to match what we are giving with our customer base (Third and first video I was introduced to Simon in "The Infinite Game").

Define “compete” as a reflection of cost relative to the ability of a massive chain to buy in bulk vs a “mom and pop” drowning in debt and dealing with a bank that is giving better interest rates in loans to the chain.
And then talk about why the chain wins.

    • @TheItalianoMafiosi
      @TheItalianoMafiosi 3 года назад

Exactly. His message makes sense in a way and applies if two competitors have the same means. Then it's up to the one being overtaken to look at the other, learn from it and improve. But if it's a small mom and pop's vs a giant chain that probably even evades taxes because it can afford the best accountants it's not really mom and pop's fault. They simply can't compete. You see this every day and in every industry. The large companies are just more powerful financially speaking, of course they'll win. It's attitudes like these that will cause more and more small business to fail with people blaming it solely on them. It's just not that simple. Sure, mom and pop's could buy soy milk and maybe a new couch. But if Starbucks enters the chat with 400 different kinds of coffee and a fancy new building with fancy new interior that they can only afford because banks will just give them loan after loan, what's mom and pop's gonna do? Sure, blame it on the owners, that's the lazy explanation that will always benefit the larger corporations. I'm not saying that those who make it usually also have better products, but that's not all. This kind of view just ignores the massive financial advantages companies like Starbucks have.

I am in complete agreement with you but at the same time it is also important that how a company coming in business with a lot of money and taking away the business from local traders. The local traders provide best of their quality and services in given resources but they are unable to compete with the big tycoons. Competition is really necessary but it works when you are at the same level and starting the race.

Human beings love comfort zones and are reluctant to change. But there are some who train themselves to embrace life as it's full of change. You are the best person qualified to compare, compete and challenge against yourself. I love the taste of coffee without milk just so to taste the coffee, so you not missing out. 🙏 💘 Inspire on sweet Simon ❤️.

Treat competitors as your teacher. They teach you what you don't have. Either learn or go out of business.

Yes! Playing the victim, getting angry and blame shifting is unproductive and self-sabotaging.

Here in South Africa the same exact problem with Uber, but oddly, the opposite problem with Starbucks. Local coffee chains and craft coffee shops are way better and often cheaper. As a result Starbucks is really struggling to gain any real momentum.

In Italy, before Uber was impossible to pay with your credit card most of the time. Furthermore, if your way was not far enough, even late in the night, taxi were not drave you where needed. They improved thanks to Uber.

You see this on a world scale throughout l history as well. A country (or city in ancient times) grows and eventually becomes an powerful empire. The empire then stagnates because they are the biggest around and have no competition and no need to change or adapt. But then bang, another power rises very quickly, takes advantage of the stagnation and the old empire collapses to give way to a new world power

Not every competitor was born equal. In some markets, the bigger always win. Taxi drivers were never rich. Even when they where "on the top", this top was pretty low.

Well taxi companies in some countries hate Uber because they have a different set of rules.
They don't pay social security, they don't pay as much taxes, they don't pay an insurance for travelers, license to operate a car with a driver is cheaper than a license to own a taxi and so on.
So it is not a better product, and it is not because of competition it is because it is a disloyal competition.

They are pointing to Uber, because Uber dosnt follow the law for taxis, though it is a taxi service so they can be cheaper.

I agree with competition, because that is what allows improved business but when the government subsidizes your competition there isn't anything you can do to adapt to that. Likewise, when the government lets your competition own a monopoly, you can pretty much just pack it up and go home.
