Proud mom here! Nice job on the video and the desk came out beautifully! I know how hard you worked on it! So glad the customer liked it! Always said, you and ‘the boss’ make a great team!
Maybe someone else has said this but just in case they haven't. If you shine a UV light over your work after sanding any remaining glue will stand out. You can then hit it before you stain. Nice video, lovely piece of furniture.
"some of this stuff ain't fun" - as a longtime woodworker myself, I've got just one bit of advice for this and it's simple. "Embrace the suck" - embrace it, own it, make it your buddy, and then ultimately when it's not looking, make it your bitch. This part of the project will NEVER go away, the last bit of handwork, whether it be sanding or hand scraping, will ALWAYS be tedious, BUT you have to remember, this is like the miners digging away the rocks to reveal the diamonds, and the more effort you put into the final handwork, the nicer the diamond you get. Have another sub :)
Thanks for the humility and sharing the mistakes. I'm finally moving beyond "I can't do this, I always mess up". Everyone makes errors. You just fix em and move forward. Good video!
I really appreciate all the design consideration and constructive issues. I love you left out a lot of the sawing and planer work , like a lot of other RUclipsr publish.
Wow ... For a first commission piece, you hit it out of the park! I love the structure and the joinery is 1st class. Congratulations. I'm looking forward to your next build.
Getting into woodworking and youre the first channel that feels similar to where i am at skill wise. Thoroughly enjoyed your video and your build. Dont stop either!
Nicely Done! I love Art Deco. Using alcohol to wipe down your piece before staining can help find the glue squeeze-out. Also make friends at a high end furniture showroom. You can get commission work for custom pieces.
Well done. Appreciate the honesty in presenting your process. We all make mistakes. Half of woodworking talent is doing something right the first time, the other half comes from recovering from mistakes.
Love everything about this! Your humor had me laughing out loud several times. Oh and the amount of time you screwed up is about the same as me on every project which makes me feel good about myself. Waiting for more videos!
I really appreciate your humor, as well as the design. Many of us are here for ideas and inspiration; for that reason, I recommend showing more (and clearer) video of the finished piece. Thank you and keep up the good work.
100% agree. I Was very disappointed in the quality of the footage I had. Unfortunately I couldn’t go back to shoot so I tried to make the best of it. It was a ‘it is what it is’ type of situation.
Nice work man! Thanks for mentioning the wood type and finish type, so many videos don't mention that. Love the Art Deco style. I try to incorporate that style in my work too.
business's as yourself give confidence in the people to help them find solutions to simple problems all within a bustling world. Its astonishing what physical communication can do to gain business and recognition. The modern generation and the overthinking woodworker would find great comfort in your humble endeavour. truly keep going Urban,
Well done! Thanks for the laughs, this was entertaining. Finish problems can be maddening, so i feel your pain with the stain problem. Congrats on the first customer!
I do my shadow lines by simply putting an 1/8" rabbet on the base of **whatever needs said shadow line**. Nice build! I also love your sarcastic wit. Looking forward to what comes next!
Quick tip for glue in corners I use a straw run in the corner and it picks up the glue real good. Never used it on anything really big but for 99% of the jobs I do works great 👍
When you mentioned the super dark color you wanted, I was thinking through the whole first part of the build about how the f-n sanding and the glue was gonna suck with stain 😂🤦🏼♂️
Shout out and Kudos to your editor. First time watching one of your videos.. who ever it is. Love his timing and rhythms through the whole video. .. and the wood work ain't too shabby either.
Bravo! Very nicely done. Really like the detailing - color is perfect on location. You're not alone admiring Art Deco - I'm finishing up a stationary steam engine with details from the SC Johnson building.
I am so glad to see that you have to do so many takes of the narration! I always feel like an idiot when I have to try it fifteen times before I get a passable one. And why is it so hard to remember to hit record? That's a beautiful piece. I'm sure you're going to get a ton more clients after delivering something like that!
Nice job! I think its cool how you drew your inspiration from the city, seems stupid simple yet i think alot of people dont think that way, pulling deaigns from the surroundings of where the piece will go.
That came out really nice. I like the art deco theme and the little gap between the base and panels really adds a nice touch. I don't like staining. I'm not good at it, so I avoid it. 👍🏾
Subscribed just because you did an Art Deco project and yes, this era is largely abandoned. I own an Art Deco house that still has some remnants of its original "NYC Deco" details, but most were stripped out during a Midcentury Modern makeover in the '60s. I'm milling all my own moldings, which is a logistical challenge in a garage shop sized to house a pair of Model A Fords. Don't apologize for the loose tenons in a cabinet like this. You are not making a museum piece, and you achieved good results. Possibly you could have avoided some of the tedium of sanding and finishing by doing both before putting the panels into the frames. Maybe masking off the glue faces. Or not. No matter which way I do it, I always say I'll do it the other way next time. I hope this leads to more commissions for you.
lol, I was going to say I have had excellent results using my Festool track saw making 45 degree long cuts. And it always reminds me to buy the biggest version of my tools because I am always wishing I bought the 75.
This was fun to watch and the finished work looks great. Really nice job. I’ve one design question for you, @Urban Maker. Why did you choose not to include the “Chrysler” detail all the way round? Art Deco always seems to be over the top on the details and can be a bit much. Is that why you made your decision as you did?
Haha. the struggle with the words hits hard at the end (and throughout). I recently started making content also, and nobody knows how many takes it actually takes to get through a video like this. Nice job on the editing and the project.
Looks amazing! I never looked into art deco before but now you got me interested in looking into art deco style furniture. Also, stain sucks. I hate stain. I've been looking into wood dyes which apparently coats better.
A woodworking video on RUclips that shows actual woodworking… what is this 2021 or something? Seriously good job on the video, subscribed, and keep them coming! 👊
The domino fake floating idea got the sub. Thats something id never considered with mine and now i cant wait to try. My mouth is watering at the idea. Incredibly creative, whether it was your og idea or not lol. Fantastic video!
Nice job, it looks great in the space and I love the panel detail that you came up with! Also good call on the mitre corners, it so much cleaner! I feel your pain having to re-sand to get rid of the glue residue! When I build frame and panel I always sand the panels and apply finish before attaching to the frame, it makes life so much easier to finish them separately. Its also easier to account for mistakes. Most of the "standard" approaches are really about correcting the invevitble mistakes that are hidden in every project ;)
Final product is very handsome..first time I've seen ash other than a natural finish..really like the cathedral panels..subscribed and ready for folow up vids..thanks for sharing
I stumbled across your channel. Great commentary! I like how the desk came out. My only (unsolicited) advice is to work on the videography. Otherwise, this channel is awesome.
Nice work, interesting to watch you work around confounding technical design issues, and how you deal with little gremlins before they get out of hand ⭐️ Sometimes I change machines between cuts. Round over both sides of the board at router table, then rip 2 strips on table saw… then repeat.
Well done! New subscriber(@1.97k), can't wait to see your next project and watch your channel grow! BTW, you should do a ASMR sanding vid since you like it so much Lol

Great video. You got my sub. Those are some high dollar tools for that being your first customer. I got my first customer in 2012 and have yet to afford Festool stuff. I did finally upgrade to a Sawstop though.
Nice build. Hope you don't take another year to upload another video. You have a great sense of humor, and decent skills, so I think you could build this channel up quickly, if you got on a regular upload schedule. I'll keep an eye out for your next one... Good luck!

He did beautiful work, Mom. Thanks for your superior genetics. We know where his creativity came from. Sorry, Pops.
This is the greatest comment I've ever seen on a woodworking channel.
This comment forced me to subscribe. Love it. Read your comment in my mom's voice e lol

Definitely a great tip! Thank you!
Same technique crime-scene investigators use to detect dried bodily fluids!
Really enjoyed your video - genuinely funny and also very nice work.
@@HonaRama24 also used to detect if a cat has pee'd under your bed. Don't ask how I know that one 😂🤦
It's not just RUclipsrs. Almost no one is designing Art Deco furniture anymore. This guy is the exception.

I absolutely love this video, it’s so well done, informative without the overload of words I don’t understand. Thanks for including me in the build.
