The space station will always be the best soundtrack for me in the game tough. This kind of calm, eerie, creepy and lonely vibe the music gives to the space station just sends shivers down my spine whenever I listen to it. This unknown place you stumble upon without really knowing what's it's purpose in the first place, who used to be there, what happened to it and knowing it will endlessly roam in the vast empty void of space without serving any purpose...
Hands down the most underrated Rare game ever. There should be a freaking sequel to this game on the Xbox One, same characters, Amazing Graphics, More guns, features, still the amazing exploration of the planets. I really can't believe it wasn't more popular than it should have been!
no there really shouldn't be a sequel and as much as I want one also I don't want microsoft to ruin it. I have a 360, Ps3 and Pc so im not biassed on anything, sony has done stupid things and so has microsoft (in my case its microsoft forcing out most of the original Rare team and now some have gotten together and started a small company and the others have become freelancers sadly....*sigh*)
Kinda sad it came down to not wanting sequels to great games due to fear of publishers botching them, isn't it? A game like JFG would have more chances as a indie/crowd funded project nowadays.
I still have my Jet Force Gemini cart with the original save file from the first time I ever completed the game; clocked over 52 hours on it. It was the most fun when I was getting lost and finding the Tribals and ship parts for the first time because I got to play the game for that much longer. Still one of my all-time favorites on the N64.
Like Conker's Bad Fur Day. This game hardly got chance to shine. But even more so. Great visuals, cute yet gruesome (a Rare speciality). Outstanding music. Really satisfying shooting action with blood and heads bouncing everywhere. And they threw in co-op and local multi-player just for the hell of it. There's a law on local multiplayer nowadays.
galacliva a year later but..it is my favorite n64 shooter. Awesome music...i bought this game by mistake at blockbuster for 99 cents longgg ago..best 99 cents ever spent
This was my all time favourite game on the N64. The style, sound, themes, it was so epic! But I just couldn't complete it, it was too tough. Finally, years later I revisited it and beat Mizar. Hope they do a HD remake, but it's great it was included in Rare Replay, thanks for sharing the Making of!
One of my favourite games ever. The issue with people who like it is they don't spend time to learn the control scheme - which is very simple to use if you spend a few minutes to work properly with it!
Loved this game when it came out. My mother made us a do a treasure hunt. My brother and I were running around our house finding clues which led us to our postbox and inside was Jet Force Gemini. It felt so badass, similar to how Halo-Combat evolved felt when it first came out.
xXBlackKZoruaXx Sadly my brother is the other person I know that knows this game. I haven’t met a single other person that knows about this game or has played it. It’s criminally underrated.
I love how they put the fish food in just for shits and giggles basically HAHAHAHA. It seems like they really had fun creating this game! And it shines throughout the game
Still have it, with box and manuals... the game my little sister and I used to play together when my big brother moved out and I had no-one to play Probotector (Contra) on the NES with :D
Best game ever period in my mind. I've been replaying for the 10th time now on my xbox series x. I first got this game year 2000 Christmas n64.took me 15 years to beat the game lol. This game is so nostalgic for me.back when I was like 5 6 7 years old when I truly got into this game and it really sparked my imagination.i had dreams about this game for years lol mostly nightmares buy truly really good memories.
one of the most memorable games of my childhood. I was only allowed to play my N64 during thanksgiving and winter break and this was the game I always ended up playing!
hey i made a facebook group for this game, here is the link if you wanna join. hopeing others will see this too, it's such a rare lol game.facebook.com/groups/678087789606967
I really find it odd how they're referencing Nintendo stuff in these videos. They even shown part of the Conker's Bad Fur Day intro which was cut out the Xbox One port due to having the N64 logo in it.
+Sergeant Sunflower it was a long time back, i think people have gotten over their petty rivalries. even nintendo is making a pokemon game for android and sony will be making a mario movie.
***** Some rivalries can vary. Heck, Microsoft congratulated Sony on their PS4 launch. Phil Spencer even said he's willing to have Banjo & Kazooie in Super Smash Bros., given that MS had collaborated with Nintendo in the past.
I just want all of these RARE games (now more or less Playtonic Games - support if you can), or at least games in the same style, to get good sequels/franchises. How I miss them!!!
Swear i didnt know david bowie made video games! This was one of my favs! It had wipeout a club with good music and the fact you could go back to other planets with different people to reach other stuff... It went well with diddy racing... I just couldn't fuck with perfect dark. Just not my style but rare was my fav company they just had humour! B.k. part one was dope but my knowing the codes by heart was a bit overkill lol
The one thing that really bugs me about this game is how in the boss fights you get mauled mercilessly without even noticing. The bastards take huge chunks of your health meter with just one hit, or they chain multiple hits at a time, and there's NO FEEDBACK for the player to notice other than the health meter going down without even a flashing or anything to call your attention on what's going on. They could have improved this with a more noticeable flashing of the health meter, or the whole screen, or your character flashing, or some animation reflecting the severity of the hit, and, for measure, throw you down when the hit is too severe and give you the usual courtesy second or two of invulnerability in order to get back on track after the hit. But mainly my grudge is with the no-feedback part. It's nearly impossible to keep track of your own status during boss battles because the HUD is not particularly easy to track and read, specially the health meter with it's multi-part structure, and that's the only thing you have to know what's happening. You can easily find yourself being pounded half of your health in an instant and not even realize it until you remind yourself to pay close attention to the health meter. There's no reaction in the player character, no feedback at all. A 1 point hit is no different than a 20 point hit that takes almost half your health. There's nothing to get a clue but looking away from the action and into the meter to realize the horrible truth. This is sort of acceptable during normal gameplay, but in the case of bosses, with their powerful attacks, it's a big overlook.
***** Well, of course I try not to get hit, and that's the point. How do you avoid getting hit if you don't realize you are being hit. In this game things can get messy fast, specially with boses. With explosions going off all arround you and lots of lasers and bullets blasting at you, and, since it's a game, you know the physics of it all aren't at all as in the real world. Even gigantic looking explosions can have a really restricted radius of damage, so you need feedback to know at what distance(s) it hit you and how hard so that you learn how to avoid them. In JFG you don't have feedback, at least not during boss battles. shit goes off arround you and you have no idea whether you've been hit or not, not to talk how hard. So, without any sign of anything being wrong, you keep playing and then you die, or you inadvertently take a peek a the health meter and "¡SURPRISE!, you are almost dead, idiot." xD There's no meaningful informative feedback for you to get a grasp of what's going on in the heat of the action. You need to constantly remind yourself to check, and get a graps of which of these seemingly inoccuous flashes actually damages you and at what distance because your damned "avatar" won't help you with that. They are like robots, the don't feel paint, they just keep going seemingly unaffected until they horribly die.
I don't quite remember now, but, doesn't the rumble function go off for lots of things too, other than damage? like shooting, nearby explosions that don't hit you... also, there's not really much of a difference, nor do I think there could be a way to stablish a meaningful method to inform, through rumbling, the fine detail in the wide range of damage intensity that you can suffer. And you wouldn't be able to tell it apart from other rumbling events. Sincerely, I don't think there's really a good substitute, in this case, for more clear visual (or audible) feedback, and I see it as a big playability flaw in this game, as it's the source of much unnecessary frustration.
@nana rana It's been long since I wrote this and I'm too lazy right now to reread everything, but I'm pretty sure there is, within the whole thing, something that already answers your suggestion. The basic idea would be that that's not something that helps in the middle of JFG's frantic boss battles. Pausing to check something is informative, but not helpful if you have to stop to check it, because, to begin with, you have to KNOW that you have to check, since, as the whole point of this rant is, there's not much to tell you "hey, you better check your health, you might be dying!". Good design in this case require ringing some bells and whistles (metaphorically) to unequivocally warn you that you are taking a beating. Something that's distinct from everything else, something that stands out. Otherwise it's like radiation, a silent death.
This game invented the Over the Shoulder system. RE4 only popularized it. Heck! You can move sideways when you aim in Jet Force, something that Leon Kennedy couldn't even do! Disclaimer: RE4 is an excellent game.
God damn I need to play this game. I wish Rare Replay was on Switch or PC. I would love to track down a N64 and this game with a functional controller but I bet getting an Xbox 1 and the game is just as cheap...
One personal favorite Nintendo 64 Rareware games on N64 since I got this game cartridge for N64 since Christmas 2002 as 8 aged kid. I like how this N64 have awesome soundtracks.
i made a facebook group if you want to join for this game facebook.com/groups/678087789606967 anyway, it's So rare to see this video, I love this game, hope I can beat it , I had it for years but kept putting it back up and down cause I was stuck on a level. But I tried it last night and luckily I got it. Such a great game, lovely character and level designs, the music is awesome...that main theme is my favorite of course!!!! When I saw the official sketches in the video I was like ohhh wow, you wouldn't get to see behind the scenes of the game if it didn't get uploaded like this , so thanks!
The only Problem i have with this game is, i love it and i want to complete it. BUT this floyd missions are so f*****g annoying. Well,I dont give up anyway. XD
The soundtrack made this game. It oozed atmosphere.
oh yea man, there was some legitimately creepy areas lke tawfret where the music took it over the top
The space station will always be the best soundtrack for me in the game tough. Best n64 game , period.
No doubt
Oh man, I forgot about shadow man
ehhh I prefer banjo kazooie
If this is the best n64 game that means the whole console is shit, because boy is this game ever fucking awful.
GamingWithChizzy To me it stands out as one of the system's best but it's definitely not without faults either.
This is incredible that I never seen the actual RARE developers talk about the games they made. Thanks so much.
+fabienzaca i guess one could say its pretty......rare.
Doh! Fer crying out loud
Hands down the most underrated Rare game ever. There should be a freaking sequel to this game on the Xbox One, same characters, Amazing Graphics, More guns, features, still the amazing exploration of the planets. I really can't believe it wasn't more popular than it should have been!

this was much better than people give it credit for, would definitely put this in a must own library of n64 games.
You can use the fish food to distract that scary ass dog near the mine on Rith Essa.
and detonate mines if you didn't want to bother with aiming them with the pistol
A real Gem of a game indeed. This might go without saying but i still have it.
Me too
galacliva a year later but..it is my favorite n64 shooter. Awesome music...i bought this game by mistake at blockbuster for 99 cents longgg ago..best 99 cents ever spent
I still have it as well, not sure if it works anymore though lol
This has got to be my favorite game of all time! The improved controls with rare replay even allowed me to finally complete it
This was my all time favourite game on the N64. The style, sound, themes, it was so epic! But I just couldn't complete it, it was too tough. Finally, years later I revisited it and beat Mizar. Hope they do a HD remake, but it's great it was included in Rare Replay, thanks for sharing the Making of!

i miss oldschool rare!, man so good memories of n64....
Loved this game when it came out. My mother made us a do a treasure hunt. My brother and I were running around our house finding clues which led us to our postbox and inside was Jet Force Gemini.
It felt so badass, similar to how Halo-Combat evolved felt when it first came out.
+Stank Planks Skateboarding Kind of fitting what your mom did with the treasure hunt. She was just preparing you for the game really.
And she didn't even know it haha
A real gem of a game
These men were masters of the Craft on consoles but also in general.
I FLIPPING LOVE THIS GAME
Everyone I have met that knows what this game is loves it too!
xXBlackKZoruaXx Sadly my brother is the other person I know that knows this game. I haven’t met a single other person that knows about this game or has played it. It’s criminally underrated.
Underrated game.
The soundtrack is also fucking brilliant
Gosh, the memories! Definitely one of the best games of all time!
This was my favorite 64 nintendo game. Thank you for such a great job. I hope that Chile can at some point reach this type of industry level.
LOOOOVED the multiplayer for this game. always a blast. literally
I love how they put the fish food in just for shits and giggles basically HAHAHAHA. It seems like they really had fun creating this game! And it shines throughout the game
Still have it, with box and manuals... the game my little sister and I used to play together when my big brother moved out and I had no-one to play Probotector (Contra) on the NES with :D
this game was like...starship troopers, star trek and alien all had a baby
An ugly baby
this gme was the halo of its age.
This game is absolutely amazing, and has so much content. Truly one of my all time favorite games.
Still have my N64 Cartridge !
Me too!

This game is a masterpiece.
Thank you for uploading this.
finally, i know what the food fish is for
It really doesn't serve any purpose until the final boss battle
halo before halo, that whats this game is called, i appreciate the excellent job of Rare, and their games
It was more a 3D Mega Man on steroids tbh. Halo was a mixture of PC shooters like Unreal, Battlezone, Half-Life, AvP, etc.
Actually it's more like Starship trooper by way of Fisher Price.
I wish Nintendo had bought RARE
Still waiting for a sequel or a remake :(
one of the most memorable games of my childhood. I was only allowed to play my N64 during thanksgiving and winter break and this was the game I always ended up playing!

Terribly underrated game
This needs to be remastered with difficulty settings and the like. Make it happen, Rare!
I just want all of these RARE games (now more or less Playtonic Games - support if you can), or at least games in the same style, to get good sequels/franchises. How I miss them!!!
this is awesome.. wish I'd had this game back in the day
The feel to this game is really unique. I freaking loved it.
This video makes me want to skip next generation and just buy retro games from 2020 and beyond. This is love.
My actual first video game I got in my life when I was four it's been the reason I took up gaming this game gave me life it made extremely happy
So thsi game was heavily inspired by the anime "Gatchaman"? AWSOME!
Thanks!
Is there a 'making of' of every game in the collection?
Swear i didnt know david bowie made video games!

i never got to beat this,... had the one last, hardest ship piece to get >.< god i loved that game... i need to get another n64 and finally beat it >.
eines meiner fav-games für n64!
tolles game, toller soundtrack. richtig klasse, wie so jedes rare-spiel von damals.
echt schade um rare...
REMAKE REMAKE REMAKE REMAKE :')
I just want to know if the Disco dancing at the end had anything to do the one at the end of TimeSplitters Future Perfect

Halo owes all of its success to Jet Force Gemini.
I feel like I'm missing out...I can't get past the tutorial level :(
It was inspirted by gatchaman!! I always knew it deep inside

Remake plz !!!!!!!!!
Remake Please! ♥️♥️♥️ 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
It was a great game.
The beat is rare!!!!!!
Rare , the only company who made real games!!
best game ever!!
Loved this game never finished it though it was hard as fuck
I love this game, and still have my n64 copy, but c'mon, having to save all the bears to open the other half of the game is fucking ebola.
Never noticed at 0:40 he’s using a missile cheat at that part and at the same time he’s legit talking about “making the game easy for players”
Fish food easy for the final boss
One personal favorite Nintendo 64 Rareware games on N64 since I got this game cartridge for N64 since Christmas 2002 as 8 aged kid.
