The Shogunate justified its actions by claiming that imperialists were trying to brainwash the emperor. In their mind, as with the imperialists, they were on the side of the emperor so the fact that the emperor lived in Kyoto wouldn't have bothered them.
The shogun wasnt anti- emperor cause that would destroy his claim. He was anti imperialistic. So their side just said the emperor is being manipulated we wont allow this
Shinsengumi are former masterless samurai who formed shogunate police so they are traditional unite but use both samurai weapon and modern guns .and specially playing Aizu would be historicaly correct because of Matsudaira Katamori was one of greatest patrons of shinsengumi. Funny think he was not against Imperor just was declered enemy of Imperor by his political enemies in imperial court, they where envy of him because he had brilliant plans and ideas to modernize Japanese in one army and use also masterless samurai in this process. Not like they did after this boshin war when lots of imperial sided samurai were lied to and basically rebelled again . He was traditionalist but he embreced modern type of warfare. To the end he never openly declered him self on the side of shogunate but he allowed parts of his army and samurai join shogunate and letter Ezo republic forces. He was spared and after war he became monk. P.S. Actually White Tigers is historical regiment of young samurai pretty much school boys who fought in denfse of Aizu , they all commited seppuku surrounded by Imperial forces and seeing that Aizu castle is burning , to this day in that place stands monument ofered by Benito Mussolinni in times of WW2 . He send orginal column from Pompei :) So it is traditional unit historicaly but in game lookslike modern
@Zetarn Because that would make Shogitai utterly Overpowered. They already trashed anything in melee to the point that parking a couple of this guy in the castle was all you needed to repel a full stack army of Levies and regular Line Infantry. Add in rifle and then they'd likely trash even Shogunate/Imperial/Republic Infantry as well.
So I originally wrote this for your Artillery only play-through but never posted it. Better late than never eh? I've posted on old videos of his and got replies. I don't see you needing to post stuff on a more recent unrelated video in order for him to see it. Also you failed to mention armor piercing and advanced armor piercing rounds. Lastly, Atk and Def refers to if you started the battle or if your opponent started it right?
Just so you know, it is a huge misconception that the Shogunate was traditional while the Imperialists were modern. In reality both embraced modern methods and weapons. The misconception comes from the movie "Last of the Samurai" obviously. A hollywood movie that is historically inaccurate, who would would have thought?
While that may be true, the problem with pro-shogunate forces is that they are poorer than the Satsuma and Choshu Clans, thus unable to afford as many Modern Rifles as them. Therefore they had to often rely on pre-modern weaponry.
In the revolt that the last samurai is based on they did acctually use mostly bows and swords. However this is mostly due to the fact that they ran out of ammunition ;)
Yeah The Last Samurai is based on the Satsuma rebellion rather than the Boshin War but the film does make it seem like the samurai refused to use modern weapons when in reality they embraced rifles and cannons but fought instead for their privileges in society.
While Samurai did use guns (in fact in the 16th century there where more guns in Japan than in the whole rest of the world!) the Shogunates final battle did largely go as depicted in the movie weirdly enough. For a much more mundain reason than "honour" though: the rebels had run out of bullets...
The last samurai was a French: Jules Brunet (not Tom Cruise). He refused to leave the last Shogun, when the french diplomacy asked him to leave Japan. He refused to leave in the name of honor, and with his team of diplomatic french military fought with the Shogun against the Imperialists. When the last Shogun was defeated on Honshu (the main island of Japan) and moved to Hokkaido. The last samurai was appointed as the minister of defense while his team served other minister positions. He ordered the construction of Vauban (Vauban was a french military genius of the 16th century, he was named by the court of the Sun King, and then became Vauban's nickname "the french Leonardo Da Vinci") style fortresses on Hokkaido, of whom are still there today. When the last Shogun was defeated he was forced to retreat to France, there Japanese Imperial's wanted him punished. However the French government commended him and let him take a year of break before he went back to his work. (All while that the French were "pretending that they did punish him" to please the Japanese).
FOTS w/o Artillery makes for a whole new experience. Having each battle be a defensive one is just as broken as Yari Wall imo. Sooner or later well have a play-through with every clan I'm calling it now. Gl Donkey, not like you need it
Yes! Love playing FotS this way, not just for the cinematic experience of the battles but the fact they're the polar opposite of the limberered-up line infantry killing zones. Nothing beats that banzai roar as you crest a hill and cut modern infantry to ribbons. Only trouble is you can't auto resolve anything late game, even a couple of parrot guns will inflict horrific casualties. At least there'll be plenty of battles to watch :)
You ever use the Sakanade Traditional Daiymo Armors mod? It makes the whole game much more possible with a trad playthrough by upping the modernization loss of certain trad buildings so you never have to modernize.
I was thinking of how fun it's to use traditional units to wreck line infantry as the Jozai during ambushes and using a combination of yukigetai, shogitai, shogunate guard infantry and sabre cav covered by Armstrong cannons to lure the enemies and then charge on their flanks. Then, I realized I sucked at it and lack the time to learn. Gladly, I remember a certain Intelligent Equidae that can entertain and teach me.
The "zu" is pronounced, it sounds kind of like eyezoo. If the shinsengumi police force is acceptable since it is a samurai gun unit, then hypothetically the white tiger force could have possibly been acceptable. The Byakkotai was a unit of 16 and 17 year old samurai. They were originally meant to be for training, but through the events of the Boshin War they ended up being sent into battle. Almost all of them killed themselves with the fall of Aizu. Not saying you have to, it is your let's play. Just saying that technically, it is a samurai unit.
Most of the time when I played FotS, early game is feel like I'm playing traditional units challenge, as I refused to waste money on modern building in non-blacksmith provinces, so I have nothing but spear levy. But on hard mode, I'm forced to get artillery at least, to make life easier. After I got blacksmith, that's when I start building modern units. Shame that Spear levy no longer has Yari wall, perhaps CA realized how broken they are?
Alright, as someone who has played the Aizu several times, I really want to leave some tips, first off, REALLY good call north, I've tested this on normal, and if you take that southern providence, edo, jozai, and sometimes even sendai soon declare war afterwards, along with the imperial faction to the west of it, but now your on the path to fighting the matsumae, they aren't threatening with their armies, but they WILL have naval superiority, and will require cheeky maneuvering to land, once you do though, you get access to two very good port providences to build up your navy along with the coal from them to trade, and some other niceties
I really wanted him to mod himself in as the Tokugawa and use gun units and whatnot to win the war. I also like the clan to the left of the Aizu with the star in the circle.
Sun Shower There's like two factions that resembles "the Star in the Circle" logo in either white banner: - The Soma Clan of the Soma Domain, w/c is somehow not included in FotS as being in the Aizu Coast of Fukushima. (White star and Black banner) - A Northern Alliance (Oetsu Reppan Domei), w/c is led by top Shogunate domains such as Matsumae, Yonezawa, Aizu, Nagaoka, Sendai, and the displaced Jozai army resisting Saigo's Imperial Armies after the Fall of Edo.(Black Star and White banner)
Sun Shower sorry, just went over the 1st sentence there. On playing as the Tokugawa Shogunate (Edo Domain), that's actually a decent mod concept like the Ashikaga Shogunate campaign mod. Would be actually fun to kill your traitors when they switch allegiance to the Emperor, and leading the war after RD, along w/ a chosen AI Shogunal Vanguard (depending on which playable vassal domain [they're not just allies if the Tokugawa overlords all of Japan!] are just as decently powerful as you)
Shinsengumi were formed in 1863 and the name loosely means "newly elected people", so they are a modern unit. Historically they were also made up of more than just samurai. For the record, I don't care whether you use them or not in this campaign, just out of clarity, they are a modern unit with modern rifles and modern concept of a diverse group. Saber cavalry are also a modern unit, using western-style sabers, bugles and uniforms instead of the Japanese saber (the katana). Use what you wish and have fun.
Shinsengumi are not modern, they were traditionalists that adopted the use of modern rifles yet also held katanas, they embraced tradition and most times elected tradition over modernism
@@SinfullyHera they are modern. their units were comprised of various social classes fighting side-by-side, as opposed to a strict separation of rank by class, and using modern weapons/tactics. these things supersede their clothes or beliefs because we're talking about the context of war. question: which weapon saw more combat and was more effective? katana or rifle?
@@SinfullyHera Irrelevant. Their ideology isn't the center of my original comment from 5 years ago. To repeat, it's their weapons, tactics and over-all methods of war. I hope you finally see that you're wrong because my interest in this exchange has vanished. Good day.
When I installed Shogun 2, all I can think of was the movie "The Last Samurai". Loved that movie. Not for the inaccuracies but.. just coz it's a samurai movie lol. I also hoped there would be one clan that only had mostly samurai units here. Guess this will do.
I don't think at that point in time the currency was koku anymore. The koku was a measurement of rice that was enough to feed a person for a whole year, roughly 150 kg of rice. So, like, if a Daimyo wanted to have 400 warriors, they needed to produce at least 400 koku in their provinces each year, so they could feed the army. Officers took more, because they would give it to their wives, who would in turn hire servants and personal guards.
Oh so the fact that between the 1820's-1840's many of the domains in Eastern Japan experienced widespread famine to the point of the mass starvation for both samurai and peasant classes and the government refused to do anything until the people revolted and forced their hand is peaceful? Sure just keep telling yourself that.
Will you allowed yourself to us some french marines ? Since in fact some of them were with the shogunat side even at the end of the Ezo republic ? Btw one tips alway have one boat at each dockyard, 'cause when they gonna initiate a sea battme you gonna have X costal fort fighting with you so with a cannon boat you can handle a full fleet at a port preventing dangeroug naval invasion :3 I usualy played Saga as republic ( the starting cannon is a great help, i take over shikoku, kyushu and the main land securing my ports and going through, the whole game easily) For you Kisho gonna be really usefull to take out enemies cannons, i used Bow cav to rekt ennemies above some hills they can be usefull if you don't wan to use rifle cav' / rev' I hope you gonna enjoy this run than we gonna enjoy watch it :3
13:00 - I always thought I was the weird / desperate player who immediately starts making bullshit diplomatic moves just to squeeze out all the possible spare change from the inevitable enemies around you
Just started this kinda challenge myself, im not allowing me to use ANY muskets or arty at all for now. Only trad units, without a musket, So either bow, sword or spear. I have no navy right now and I will try to avoid having one as long as possible, the only exception to some muskets I have are garrisoned units that I allow as its not really part of "my army".
IMHO Aizu and Choshu are good clans for going republic because they each have unique units that are basically on par with SIR infantry, but don't disappear when you go republic.
No matchlocks. Do something like Vampire counts playstyle. Yari levies as meat shield. Katana kachi and yari ki mostly. Just few yari kachi for defence from enemy cavs but you could do that with yari ki so not much needed. Ps. Those unarmoured melee katana wielders are also good(forgot the name, is it shogitai?)
Pro tip: You'll need meat shield units. Matchlock Kachi are excellent since they can spread their formation, they have guns of their own and they're decent in melee. Now bonus points if you ban everything that gives you "clan modernization". Factories, markets, ships, shipyards, everything (you can use gunboats for transportation only)! It might even be more benefitial if you stay at modernization level 1.
Staying at level 1 or 2, you're basically sacrificing tens of thousands of koku for the sake of some extra experience on your traditional units and the potential ability to use Stand and Fight with a general's hatomoto that is 60 strong. To begin with that extra experience is valuable. But once you have recruited your first full stack, it isn't worthwhile. And Stand and Fight is not as good as Ganbatte. Having 60 in your hatamoto is definitely valuable but becomes less relevant once you have Yari Ki.
It actually depends what regional dialect you're speaking to what extent the 'u' is audible - generally it's a voiceless consonant [ɯ̥] (IPA). That said, in cases such as "Aizu" it is definitely not a straight [u] sound as in "zoo".
For what counts as a "traditional unit" I'd go by the criteria of "if you'd get an experience boost recruiting this unit if you'd have low clan modernization". What building the unit comes from and if the unit was used in the sengoku period would be irrelevant. Sadly, I'm not sure where you'd get that info. Because Aizu get +1 experience with traditional units, that could be a way to tell assuming you are playing Aizu (which you are). As for the ships, I dislike the idea of you using ships, but based personal experience, having a navy is important in FOTS because enemies being able to costal bombard your provinces with impunity is not fun. So going without ships is impractical. You could limit yourself to unarmored ships. Looking at a Steam comment, it appears that some ships are unable to be in boarding combat altogether. So even if you wanted to limit yourself to only board enemy ships, you wouldn't be able to attack some of them.
Devin just did this as the Choshu for a TIC, still saddened by the fact that unique troops aren't allowed if you go full traditional or melee, MrSmartDonkeyLP EDIT: How about Shogunate Guard Cavalry, btw? They're full melee are they?
I talk about this in a later episode, I think I'll allow myself Shogunate Guard Cav, I've actually been doubting my decision on Shinsengumi Police Force, maybe I shouldn't allow myself them, I'm not sure yet.
I don't think you would do Multi-Coop campaigns but I would really like a committed person to play with on Coop XD Rome 2 and Shogun. (Also I don't even use guns on the field but mostly just for defence since...Defence lol, My Aizu campaigns have gone well with just Traditional Samurai units with no guns other than the defences since its kinda needed and also unavoidable. I went last Samurai Build for my campaigns and its fairly easy until you reach end game somewhere.)
In my experience, traditional units only is not so bad. The AI is too stupid, so once you reach them you'll butcher them completely with your melee combat superiority.
The bitch Koku is basically a way to make another clan your bitch. Usually when getting a trade deal with another clan you ask them for some money, sometimes they pay a lot, other times they don't want to pay anyway. In the latter case you ask them for a single koku, if they're willing to accept that they're basically admitting they're your bitch because it's an even deal, trade for trade, but they'll pay a koku to make it happen, hence the bitch koku.
Hey smart donkey, you think you could do a top 10 mods or top 5?like gameplay changes units ect? Maybe a top 5 mods but each mod has to be a different category.
I'm actually starting a mod spotlight series soon, but it won't be top 5's or anything, just spotlighting different mods each video. Can't really do a top 5 best mods, that would mean I'd have to try every single mod available to form a proper opinion.
well easy challange exept if you go for the republic :D well better only t1 for the technology tree so no modernisation, thats possible but a bit of an extra challange
is shogun 2 a shit total game compared to others or is it just me? ive started playing a few weeks ago and it has bored me so much.Ive played shogun, med, med 2, rome, rome 2,atila,warhnamemr 1 and 2 on very hard and legendary and i never lost, had a bit of trouble but in the end it was rly fun,but in shogun 2,diplomacy is shit and makes no sese,no1 wants to trade even if they have no trade partners and good relations with u,economy is shit, towns produce little money,i can make troops for war and upgrate my buildings at the same time, its one or the other, and im basicly stuck with ashigaru every game for ever cos next tier troops cost 800 and 150 unkeep,am i missing something and there is a special way of playing shogun or its just messed up ?

@@SinfullyHera they are modern. their units were comprised of various social classes fighting side-by-side, as opposed to a strict separation of rank by class, and using modern weapons/tactics. these things supersede their clothes or beliefs because we're talking about the context of war. question: which weapon saw more combat and was more effective? katana or rifle?
@@iamsofaking6728 And they were still traditionalists.
@@SinfullyHera Irrelevant. Their ideology isn't the center of my original comment from 5 years ago. To repeat, it's their weapons, tactics and over-all methods of war. I hope you finally see that you're wrong because my interest in this exchange has vanished. Good day.
I hope you finally see that you're wrong.@@iamsofaking6728
When I installed Shogun 2, all I can think of was the movie "The Last Samurai". Loved that movie. Not for the inaccuracies but.. just coz it's a samurai movie lol.
I also hoped there would be one clan that only had mostly samurai units here. Guess this will do.
I love the aizu. so many things you can do with this clan.
YES! Right as I start trying a fots legendary of my own
5:20 emporer says "no foreign devils on my land!"
I literally searched for this challenge today, and all that came up were your other challenges
Oh dear, finally. Keep it going
Japan lived in peace and harmony but everything changed when the Americans attacked
One Donkey will bring..
EmperorSephiroth2 jeez sorry for making a joke I guess I'll stop my blasphemy
EmperorSephiroth2 this is one of the biggest wooshes I've ever seen
EmperorSephiroth2 Don't get triggered by a joke bud it's not healthy
Thank you Steve
Yari Ki overload
Hey Donkey, who would you support? The emperor or the Tokugawa? Considering the emperor won and the Empire of Japan formed.
Will you allowed yourself to us some french marines ? Since in fact some of them were with the shogunat side even at the end of the Ezo republic ?
Btw one tips alway have one boat at each dockyard, 'cause when they gonna initiate a sea battme you gonna have X costal fort fighting with you so with a cannon boat you can handle a full fleet at a port preventing dangeroug naval invasion :3
I usualy played Saga as republic ( the starting cannon is a great help, i take over shikoku, kyushu and the main land securing my ports and going through, the whole game easily) For you Kisho gonna be really usefull to take out enemies cannons, i used Bow cav to rekt ennemies above some hills they can be usefull if you don't wan to use rifle cav' / rev'
I hope you gonna enjoy this run than we gonna enjoy watch it :3
The French were with the Shogun, but that doesn't mean they're traditional. I won't be using them, they're like the most advanced unit there is.
Use the French marines, but on melee mode only
Nah, that's just silly. They're still not a traditional unit.
MrSmartDonkeyLP As it should be. This is not a historicaly acurate game just a traditional one.
13:00 - I always thought I was the weird / desperate player who immediately starts making bullshit diplomatic moves just to squeeze out all the possible spare change from the inevitable enemies around you
The Shogunate themselves had modern ships at the time, they just lack training and officers to use them effectively.
Indeed, although I'm not sure what the relevance is for this campaign.
I did that challenge back in the days. You'll suffer a supidly high ammount of casualties :D
Having 60 in your hatamoto is definitely valuable but becomes less relevant once you have Yari Ki.
its EYEZOO
Eyezz
It actually depends what regional dialect you're speaking to what extent the 'u' is audible - generally it's a voiceless consonant [ɯ̥] (IPA). That said, in cases such as "Aizu" it is definitely not a straight [u] sound as in "zoo".
"eyez domain" of the "Eyezoo people"
good luck man
A-i-zu. In geval van twijfel, Nederlandse uitspraak in lettergrepen, met alleen een engelse G en J
ok
white tigers are their levy infantery, will you use them?
Edit nvm, they are good though.
You choosed a difficult campaign. I think Aizu is probably the worst start of all FOTS factions. Good luck!
I'm pretty sure it was the Emperor who wanted to stop modernization. Not the Shogun.
BAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNZZZZZZAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!
Devin just did this as the Choshu for a TIC, still saddened by the fact that unique troops aren't allowed if you go full traditional or melee, MrSmartDonkeyLP
EDIT: How about Shogunate Guard Cavalry, btw? They're full melee are they?
I talk about this in a later episode, I think I'll allow myself Shogunate Guard Cav, I've actually been doubting my decision on Shinsengumi Police Force, maybe I shouldn't allow myself them, I'm not sure yet.
Shogitai Spam I presumed.
Aizu is weird one alll its special units are Morden but it buff traditional
I don't think you would do Multi-Coop campaigns but I would really like a committed person to play with on Coop XD Rome 2 and Shogun.
(Also I don't even use guns on the field but mostly just for defence since...Defence lol, My Aizu campaigns have gone well with just Traditional Samurai units with no guns other than the defences since its kinda needed and also unavoidable. I went last Samurai Build for my campaigns and its fairly easy until you reach end game somewhere.)
I have about a dozen co-op campaigns on Shogun 2, mostly with OfficiallyDevin, some H2H's as well.
To victory!
ur crazy good
In my experience, traditional units only is not so bad. The AI is too stupid, so once you reach them you'll butcher them completely with your melee combat superiority.
Play the game on vh or higher difficulty
What's the story behind "the bitch goku"?
The bitch Koku is basically a way to make another clan your bitch. Usually when getting a trade deal with another clan you ask them for some money, sometimes they pay a lot, other times they don't want to pay anyway. In the latter case you ask them for a single koku, if they're willing to accept that they're basically admitting they're your bitch because it's an even deal, trade for trade, but they'll pay a koku to make it happen, hence the bitch koku.
Would r8 BANZAI/10
Hey smart donkey, you think you could do a top 10 mods or top 5?like gameplay changes units ect? Maybe a top 5 mods but each mod has to be a different category.
I'm actually starting a mod spotlight series soon, but it won't be top 5's or anything, just spotlighting different mods each video. Can't really do a top 5 best mods, that would mean I'd have to try every single mod available to form a proper opinion.
well easy challange exept if you go for the republic :D
well better only t1 for the technology tree so no modernisation, thats possible but a bit of an extra challange
It's funny they call the Americans westerners when they are the closest to them if they simply went east.
69th.. nice....
is shogun 2 a shit total game compared to others or is it just me? ive started playing a few weeks ago and it has bored me so much.Ive played shogun, med, med 2, rome, rome 2,atila,warhnamemr 1 and 2 on very hard and legendary and i never lost, had a bit of trouble but in the end it was rly fun,but in shogun 2,diplomacy is shit and makes no sese,no1 wants to trade even if they have no trade partners and good relations with u,economy is shit, towns produce little money,i can make troops for war and upgrate my buildings at the same time, its one or the other, and im basicly stuck with ashigaru every game for ever cos next tier troops cost 800 and 150 unkeep,am i missing something and there is a special way of playing shogun or its just messed up ?
Very bad playing dude.
Great constructive criticism dude.
What exactly did I do wrong in your eyes?
