I have this wonderful DVD, just love it. Both Robert Helpmann and Ludmila Tcherina were ballet dancers, Robert Rounseville playing Hoffman was actuall opera singer who sang his own roles. Conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
The first time I saw this film I was totally smitten with the Russian soprano who plays the role of Giulietta. Unfortunately, I was only three years old when the film was made. She is so beautiful!
This is the best film version of this opera. I like it that they translated the libretto, but it could be a lot better if it had been performed (on this film) in French, the opera's original langueage.
There might have been another film version with Domingo in the late '80's. It was to have been directed by Ingmar Bergman but when they found that he expected to have it in the Swedish language, the film was cancelled. The French soundtrack had been recorded and was released but oh, what might have been!
Mesmerising marriage of music, dance, costume and set design. Powell was a true genius. I first heard of them through Scorsese who has given us all many wonderful gifts!
If you don't mind Portugese subtitles the whole film version is available ( so far) on internet arch org archive.org/details/Contos_de_Hoffmann_1951_Leg
The most memorable movie because of this glorious music!
This the most beautiful dance movie ever made; it is perfection.

This is beautiful of a bygone age. Tenor’s diction absolutely superb. Reminiscent of G and S style.
He did perform G&S.
This is one of my favorite operatic pieces of all time...how utterly delightful and winsome!
The movie is beautiful from the opening credits until the end credits
Always the case with Powell & Pressburger. Visual feasts!

Una storica edizione meravigliosa!
Yes, it is a wondrous/marvelous historically significant version.
I love the Baccarole!
Oh my God is this moving or what. If you don't weep, you have no heart.

Ray Kaelin We played this at my Dads funeral he loved this piece.
Lunar, reflective...expressing a certain messianism in the arts...meaning it is solemn, dignified, charismatic and quite enthusiastic...
I just wish The Criterion Collection would release this on blu ray!
Moi aussi!
It was available from Criterion for a while but then discontinued for whatever reason.
Amazing I’m glad to find this video
Big influence on Toxic Avenger and Troma!
A bit long mind but sad too
+amy clarke Never too long for me! Certainly tugs at the old heart-strings, though.
only creative arts brings back my equanimity from the outrage it feels from the way we are so called governed handled in society
