I am personally a complete newbie, and I’m getting humbled every single time I roll. I am only in the first few months and you’re right the guys that look the scariest,are often the most understanding and gentle teachers out there. The guys I worry about are big heavy muscular white belt. All power no control.
BJJ changed my life in the first 8 months (coming up on 2 years in April). Stepping on the Mat weighing 260 lbs went down to 196lbs. Got silver at my first tournament against a field of 8 (Houston Opening). Since Covid I'm back to 208lbs and maintaining a great lifestyle! Also fantastic friends who all want to choke me out...but in a loving way.
Benefit Six: Mental Health. I've only done BJJ for 10 weeks now and I've noticed that I am more engaged with the world right here right now. While being choked on the mat you can't think of how bad your day was or worrying about the future. For me the "present" mindset stays on for hours after leaving the gym. Great vids man! Jiu-Jitsu is a great thing for so many reasons (well my neck doesn't like it, but that's mostly my fault LOL!). BJJ teaches us to work hard & learn to relax at the same time. It will teach you a lot about yourself! I've been training for 10 years & only missed time due to injury. I'm still a Purple belt & seeing others get promotions much faster (even surpass me) has taught me a lot about checking my ego (in a positive way). We're truly not all equal (talent, strength, size, flexibility), but we can all always improve our BJJ.
Since I've been doing jiu jitsu for like six months or what ever... I find it that I dont really feel scared or angst like I used to when I'm in public. Before in the back of my mind I kind of felt insecure. But since doing jiu jitsu, thats faded away alot. I think it alot to do with I dont feel like I have to prove anything anymore, I know where I stand, I know I can f people up, I know alot of people can f me up so I can chill now and not worry about it, I know where I stand and I dont have to prove anything. And because of that I feel like I'm a much nicer more open person because I'm not scared anymore... The fitness part to, I was lifting for about 9months before doing jits and thats cool, but it didn't prepare me for the weird ass positions my body would be in. Like you said, posture has improved. My body feels the best it has in years even though I'm having fights on the mat. General mobility has improved so much, its awesome. Yeah and like you said too the people you meet are pretty dope. The people are quite genuine, its mean.

Jedi, I've doing it for a couple months. I use it to defend myself from people that don't wear masks. There was an older woman at walmart without a mask and I immediately baseball slid into de la riva, but they always just apply pressure with the walker. Is there a good counter to this?
It’s one of the least agressive style to calm down a fight. You could potentially make a buddy out of a random street fight with mma you gotta ko them to but the guy in his place.
I'm thinking of starting Brazilian Jiu-jitsu specifically but am very put off by the rate of injuries that I've heard you can get from it (some say they've had broken ribs, fingers, wrists etc. by their second session). I'm not planning on learning it competitively, it's mainly just for self defense. Do you have any idea about the injuries and how likely they are?

I have no Bjj experience or any other martial art, other than some grab assery with a wrestler friend of mine that whops my ass every time... The push motivating me to go through all your content along with Jordan's who teaches jj, is from an occurrence from earlier this year. I got body slammed by a purple belt when i was drunk... in some more grab assery "fun" where this time I initiated it with a little belly poke & tity "scoop." The other guy had 45lb on me plus a ton more experience... I didnt even know how to fall right. He went from 0 to 100 instantly after the "Scop".... I ate his hard wood floors and was sandwiched between his 230lb body and the ground. Needless to say I was out of the fight immediately and left... I was out of there so quickly, I ended leaving without my shoes.. walked home in socks. I literally ran away like a dog with his tail between his legs... Ended up with some chest pain for a couple of months... I thought I would never fully heal... Hard to move, lay down, or sit up right... More fun.. Long story, longer. You're Inspiration for me to get out there, start training bjj, start my own channel and get back to kickin' ass in life again. CanT thANk yoU enough!!

Thanks! Definitely want to find a gym where you feel comfortable. Start slow you could ask the higher belts to roll with you as it’ll be safer than rolling with a spazy white belt. You just gotta go with it. Good luck 👍🏽

Definitely want to find a gym where you feel comfortable. Start slow you could ask the higher belts to roll with you as it’ll be safer than rolling with a spazy white belt.
You just gotta go with it.
