I couldn’t agree with you more! Marcis has done a lot for the sport & a lot of people have respect for him :-) he also use to do a lot of testing for Dale Earnhardt Sr. & i don’t mean just testing during the week with a few other teams but Marcis use to test set ups for Earnhardt Sr. during actual races & that was near the end of his career when Marcis drove the #71 “Real Tree” Monte Carlo in an “RCR” car.
He did it his way. Never formed an alliance or merged with other teams. Bought some used parts and did most of the work himself. He is considered a legend in my world.
I seriously do not understand how Dave isn’t in the HOF. Sure he didn’t win very many races, but he was a pioneer for early NASCAR and did almost all of it on his own while making little to no money. Truly one of the all time greats considering he was competitive with only a tiny tiny fraction of what other teams had.
First met Dave at Maxton, NC. He was there with his ECTA Mile car and I was running my 1940 Ford Flathead. We were pitted across Dave and crew. It was their 1st ECTA mile event and they were having a hard time in tech. Land speed racing is different from NASCAR in the safety requirements so as racers do, we went over to offer whatever advice we could to get Dave through tech. If memory serves, the problem was how he had the parachute release set up. Dave's solution was inexpensive, simple and it worked! The tech guys finally realized Dave was right. Later on that year, I got my Cup car on track. I called Dave several times for advice which he freely gave. He is a fine racer and person. And yes, he should be in the HOF!
Dave is unreal. I was working at a project at the Asheville airport. One day I came upon a guy and and old chevy pick up truck parked on a really tight curve on the way back to the backside of the airport. Here was this guy with a slag hammer breaking up some concrete in the middle of that curve. This guy had a Goodyear hat on and a flannel shirt and wing tip shoes. It was Dave breaking up some concrete that dried in the middle of the road. I spoke with Dave and told him that I was going to stop traffic before that corner so he would not get run over. You see somebody must have lost a bag of concrete off a truck and it got wet and dried in the middle if the road. Dave was concerned about that. I hope when I reach his age I am still going half as good as he is. You have to love the guy. He survived many racing crashes and I dam sure did not want to see anything happen to him that day. This happened about a year ago.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dave one night before the twin 125 in Daytona. I worked for a company that sponsored his car that year. We had a press conference to unavailing of the new car. After, a few of us had dinner together. What a night !! About 3 hours of story telling and fellowship!! Oh the stories!! I was on the edge of my seat! The next day at the track we toured the pits, and spent hours in Dave's pit (I stayed out of Dave and his guys way) . I got to watch him race the 125 from atop his car hauler (I was on cloud 9). Dave had a great race, competed for the lead several times and brought it home in 7th. That was prob 17 or 18 years ago. What a great guy!! He didn't know me from Adam, but made me feel a part of his team for a moment in time. Class act!!!!

He was what brought NASCAR to were it is today , now that's racing these silver spoon kids don't have a clue what legends like him had to endure and sacrifice just to maintain and do what he loved , and that was racing ! Heck this man would and could do it all . Once he had raced his heart out for 500 plus miles and not in the comfort these drivers have today , it might be at Pocono , Michigan or anywhere .. He would load up his not so fancy hauler in the early days , and climb in the truck seat of his tractor-trailer and drive another 12 hours or more back to the shop in Asheville ,N.C. to prepare for the next race ... Dave Marcis...one neck of a guy!! My boys met him in the 90s at Watkins Glen when I was there doing a regional broadcast. Real kind, talented, smart, and a bit different in how he did things. Great example of humanity
met him after the 96 race at watkins glen . he apologized for running out of aol cd's to sign (met him going into a restaurant ) and asked him for a good race story instead.
Now THIS is a REAL racer! I remember him on the track as a driver with an under funded team but he wasn't afraid to mix it up. Unlike most of todays steering wheel holders this guy built and worked on his own cars like they all used to. I love the slogan above his office door too!
Perseverance definitely comes to mind when Dave Marcis is mentioned. He ran for so many years in his own race team, keeping at it even late in his career when his car had nowhere near the speed to compete for wins. Dave strikes me as a guy who wanted to win, but loved racing and wanted to be out there no matter what.

Beloved by fans...highly regarded and respected by competing drivers....had a great run with Chrysler Corporation....did it his own way and asked for no quarter. He was a champion even though he never won a cup championship.
He might be the only driver in history to compete in the Daytona 500 in 5 different decades. Only other chance would be Richard Petty having to compete in 1959. But Marcis is a legend in his own right!

AWC 89 Danica is middle ground. More of a Illinois girl. They have Dick Trickle though. Paul Menard comes to mind as well. Wisconsin is a great racing state, despite being the Midwest, that’s for sure!
He always rubbed me the wrong way. He wasn't the poor old Dave, everyone makes him out to be. The K and K Insurance #71 wasn't the "independent" class of rides. When he was running in his "independent" years, he was riding off the coat tails, as all independent drivers were, of James Hylton. He was the one who stuck his neck out with NASCAR to do more for the independents. Almost got his head chopped off for it too. James was a championship crew chief for Ned Jarrett. Rookie of the year, second twice in the points, in his own equipment. The biggest sponsor he ever had was Pop Cola. They paid the tire bill. "Poor" Dave had Stacy, Lifebouy, Olive Garden, Helen Rae, Realtree, plus a few others, that were nothing to sneeze at. All that "used" equipment weren't exactly premium priced either. He also got a decent penny renting out some of his not so best cars too. Not saying he had it easy. No one who makes it that far does. But there is the hard way, and then there is the HARD way. James was a racer until the day he and his son died. Literally, until the day he died. Coming back from Talladega this year, from an ARCA race his team couldn't qualify for because they broke the only engine they had.
Where did any of that come from? Why would you come to a video about Dave to discredit him via James Hylton? Trust me, James has more help from Arca teams than many would ever know. Aside from that he got plenty of help from Roush his last few years driving. I never heard these guys speak ill of each other and I doubt they ever would have. James did what he did in Martinsville that day with the blessing of many independent teams and the spite of many top ones. If you want to create some faux agenda, speak on Petty who often outclassed drivers based solely on equipment and manufacturers budgets. With much of the testing and R and D done for him, Richard got what amounted to world class components . Thus he never saw or learned the needs for R&D. When other teams had equal support, his performance suffered. After his retirement his team suffered for the very same reasons. When it was too late he started forging "technical alliances" trying to get caught up BUT it was and is still too late. In closing, James and his son only knew racing. His accident the year before put him in that position far more than a blown engine at Talladega. He was driving around in a school bus (provided from another team) and the bus broke down. Without a way home, his crew chief was driving them back. James always drove, at night, off highways and as far away from DOT as he could get. Nobody will ever fully know what happened that morning and even if we did, it changes nothing.
