  • Peg Solitaire, how to turn it and how to play it!
Hi my friends! In this video I made a peg solitaire, also known as brainvita, senku, one soldier or solo noble. For the board I used a piece of red oak, and for the pegs, I used cocobolo. The game is very old, apparently originating in Madagascar, and can be traced back to 1687 during the reign of Louis XIV. There is an engraving of Princess of Soubise, from 1697, playing it and an article in the French magazine Mercure Galant, from 1687 with a description of the board, the rules and some sample problems. I used to play this game when I was a kid and went to visit my mom's aunt house, "la China" and "el Toto", who had it in a small box. I used to play for hours with my brothers trying to see who left the least amount of pegs on the board. Very nice memories! There are different versions, some with more pegs and some with marbles instead of pegs. At the end of the video, I show one of the possible solutions to the game.

    Disclaimer:
You, and only you, are responsible for your safety in the shop and for your health. The procedures shown in this video, (and my answers to the comments), although they are the ones I consider safe, are not necessarily so for every operator (wood turner, carpenter, etc.). Wood is a heterogeneous and unpredictable material, not two pieces are identical, even when they come from the same trunk of the same tree, shop tools and machines can cause damage to the operator, dust and other physical and chemical contaminants may cause disease and disorders when the operator does not take into consideration adequate protection. Always read operation manuals for your tools and machinery. This video can give you a point to start your research on what is the best for you, but, in any way is the only source of information. The level of experience of the operator is also a factor; procedures that may be safe for an operator that has a lot of experience may not be dangerous for an operator with less experience. If you do not feel safe or confident with a procedure you have seen in my channel, do not repeat it. Be safe and enjoy these activities.

    Hi Daniel, As always superb.
You have turned a piece that is a game into a piece of art. Same a Bram I used to play this as a child, without any success I might add. I wish you had posted this video 50 years ago then I could have impressed everyone in solving the game.
Thank you so much for the shout out. I really appreciate it and your very kind comments about what I make.
It is a strange coincidence that the other channel you mentioned was Stewart Furini's, I also follow Stewart and he was the inspiration for my video this week which I posted this morning.
Thank you once again Daniel and take care. Cheers, Huw

Hi Huw! Thank you so much, my dear friend, for such nice comments! It was great to be able to talk about your and Stewart's channel in the video. I will check your new video. I generally do not apply color to the pieces, but I am beginning to feel tempted to do it. Cheers! And keep yourself and your loved ones healthy! Daniel
