  • Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, Oman was completed in 2001 in honor of the longest-serving Sultan of Oman, who was in power from 1970 until his death in early 2020. This is the main prayer hall. It covers 46,750 square feet and can hold up to 6,500 worshippers. The carpet that covers the entire prayer hall contains 1.7 trillion knots, weighs 21 tons and took 4 years to complete by hand. It used to be the largest single-piece carpet in the world but was overtaken several years later by a larger carpet in a mosque in Abu Dhabi. The chandelier in the central dome is massive. It's 46 feet tall, weighs 8.5 tons, and contains 600,000 crystals. It was constructed by a German company (Faustig) and is now the second largest chandelier in the world. The largest is, like the carpet, in that newer mosque in Abu Dhabi.
