If a man decided to marry a certain woman primarily because he likes the idea of cutting the grass, changing the light bulbs, and putting out the garbage, we would question the man’s sanity. One doesn’t marry for these reasons. A man marries a woman because he is in love with her. The other responsibilities do come with marriage, but they are far down the hierarchy of importance and emphasis. They are not the motivation for the marriage.

Fr Brett Brannen ( To Save a Thousand of Souls ).
The voice of God can come to us at different times of the day, and not only during prayer. We can recognize his voice easily when he tells us that he loves us, that he wants us to love him, to love others, to serve others, and to repent of our sins. These are the things we would expect God to say! The challenge is when he tells us unexpected things. It is hard to be sure of the answer when we ask questions like: ∼ Should I ask that girl out on a date? ∼ What should I do to help my parents with their troubled marriage? ∼ Which college should I attend?
∼ Who should I ask to be my spiritual director? ∼ When should I contact my diocesan vocation director?
∼ What is my vocation? But keep asking these kinds of questions and keep actively listening for the answers. Sometimes God does not immediately answer our questions for serious reasons: because we are not yet ready to hear the answer; because we are not yet able to act on his answer; or because it is just not yet the time for us to know this information. This can be frustrating. But be patient! A Need-to-Know Basis I often say to seminarians that God gives us information like in the military, “on a need-to-know basis.” If you are diligently pursuing the will of God for your life, I promise you that God will speak this information clearly to you at the proper time. Your job is to be disposed to the Lord’s voice, prepared for when God speaks to you about your vocation. God knows when the time is right. Just keep saying to Jesus, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening. I want to want what you want.”

Seek and You will Find… and Flourish
The discernment of your correct God-predetermined vocation is the most important decision that you will make in your entire life. It may seem easier or less frightening to make your own plans or to decide your own vocation. But the truth is that the most peaceful place in the world for you is in the perfect will of God. To get there involves a diligent search. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-12). No one can force you to search for your vocation. It must be your free decision to search, to discover, and to respond. If you choose to search, I promise you that you will find your particular vocation, though it may not be easy. If you choose not to search, you are not likely to find it. I believe one of the problems in the Church today is that many people are in the wrong vocation. Many people have grown up unaware that they have a vocation, much less that they should be asking God to reveal it to them. And there are many unhappy, unfulfilled, dissatisfied people. As a general rule, people flourish in their correct vocation! Flourishing does not just mean they are happy. It means they are steadily growing in holiness, they are fulfilled, and they are becoming the person God wants them to be.
