      +Accursed Farms I like it. Feels odd having a short Accursed Farms video though, by your usual standards.
      I tested out those Nvidia 3D glasses with the Avatar game (customer build etc) and I agree, the 3D glasses thing we currently do is a tad...well, staccato. Very clearly defined layers. Not terribly realistic at all. Haven't bothered since, as the GPU hardware the systems require, and the space - oh lord, the space - they need seems over the top.

    I had a vivid dream about Ross's game dungeon last night. yeah I know it sounds weird. he was reviewing Roller Coaster Tycoon. even for a vivid dream, it was oddly detailed. anyways in the middle of the review, he started to talk about in game and real life economics, comparing them with growing anger and with his death stare. then he got super upset, started to scream and smashed his tv and threw it out the window. I woke up laughing my ass off in tears.

    The problem with stereoscopic 3D gaming as a potential primary gaming device is that the average core gamer plays 3 hours a day. That's 90+ hours a month _on average_, and that kind of workload is simply not possible for your eyes to handle when they are being forced into an unnatural diverging state by stereoscopy.
    That's not going to stop people from trying though: prepare for a lot of reports of headaches and vision problems once the Oculus hits and people ignore the safety precautions documentation.

    • @glyphbin
      @glyphbin 9 лет назад +10

      Ghost81 I think that might be correct for most people, but I've definitely played games in stereoscopy for far longer than 3 hours, so I don't think "simply not possible" is necessarily accurate.

    • @Ghost_Of_SAS
      @Ghost_Of_SAS 9 лет назад +6

      glyphbin Yes but has this been occasional or for long stretches of time (months on a daily basis)? I am arguing against 3D as a _primary_ gaming device here, that is a device that is used for the vast majority of a person's gaming activity.

    • @glyphbin
      @glyphbin 9 лет назад +1

      Ghost81 Yeah you are probably right, I have a weird resistance to motion sickness and other similar effects. So I have used stereoscopy as regularly as you describe, but, as frustrating as it is, I have definitely found that people tend to get sick really fast. Though I do hope that this can be lessened as people are more exposed to the technology.

    • @Ghost_Of_SAS
      @Ghost_Of_SAS 9 лет назад +23

      glyphbin Well, here's the problem with that: as I understand it, the reason why people get eyestrains with 3D is that our eyes are actively fighting it, its entire principle being to defocus them from their default converging position and into an unnaturally divergent one which generates the optical illusion. The eyestrain is actually a healthy response from your body, which is trying to correct an anomaly it doesn't "understand".
      Now, some people feel it more than others, but I would speculate that people getting acclimatized to 3D to such an extent that the optical muscles are no longer fighting it would mean that the muscles have been "bent into submission", so to speak, which can lead to permanent damage, which is why 3D is not suitable for small children, whose optical muscles are not yet developed. It is no surprise that some researchers are treating the popularity of 3D media almost as an epidemic.
      As a general principle, the path to follow is never to hope humans adapt to the machine, but the other way around: improved devices which work around the issue are the way to go, even though this opens up a whole lot of new issues: the human brain as an organ is, well, really stupid, and often needs help telling what's real from what's not, and individuals who fail to do so are called schizophrenics. If technology gets to a point where we eliminate the psychological buffer helping the brain distinguish between real and not real, the implications could potentially be dire. of course that's up in the air: we will need decades of research in order to record the actual consequences.
      Damn that's a long post. Sorry about the science babble.

      @Accursed_Farms  9 лет назад +22

      Ghost81 Yeah damn, it could be a real dilemma.

    May not have been the case for everyone else, but 2015 was a pretty rad year for me (no, that’s not just nostalgia, I knew it was great as I was living it). This video takes me back to that year immediately. I treasure it and come back here pretty often just to enjoy it. It’s such a free video - no relevance to world events of the time, Ross doesn’t appear nearly as stressed, full of energy and fun, just having a great time. You’d never think a simple rant about 3D would bring anyone so much joy.

    I long for another Ross Rants video.
    You got me into stereo 3D as of late, but I've had to learn the hard way that not only is it dead, but it's impossible to run on modern systems unless you have analog glasses and a program willing to display that fade effect to make the basics possible. I have an Elsa Revelator and considered NVidia's 3D Vision 2, but even NVidia's glasses would need a VM and a way to spoof a compatible board if I ever ran it.
    And I seeked out Stereo 3D because VR isn't getting cheaper, but it feels as if the entire industry (excluding Windows of all companies) is conspiring to scrub Stereo 3D out completely. Help me Ross. I want to go to other worlds like you.

    I got use an Oculus rift from my University because my housemate was designing a game for it. It's honestly one of the coolest things I've done. The game was only 8 bit, and it was a very basic platformer. That said, moving around in actual 3D and being fully immersed in the game was an experience unlike anything else I've done. The closest thing I can compare it to is a lucid dream. You'd think real life, but there's still something a bit off about it.
    My point is that 3D gaming is as cool as it sounds, and the Rift and so on are actually worth being excited for. You know, like when we could get excited by new prospects in gaming, rather than just more Broshooter and Madden.

    Watching this in 2021.. almost prophetic. We now know that VR can be great. As soon as the technology catches up and becomes more affordable, I can´t imagine playing anything else. Oh, I still do. I own a old rift and can´t wait for some 4k wide fov glasses to become affordable.
    Most people haven´t really hit on the real magic of VR... SIZE. I played a lot of Fallout VR and Skyrim etc. but I only got it when I got Kingdom Come Deliverance working... walking into that castle town felt like walking into a real town, simply because everything was the right SIZE compared to me. Sure, Fallout etc. have that too, but the Graphics are just too stylized to get the point across. KC:D took me over the edge. Those towns look real enough in flat, as do the forests. But wait till you see them at the right size!! Granted, It took a while and fiddling with Vortex and it ran like hell on my old 1060.. but I recently tried it on my new 3070 and man... if I had a headset with no screen door effect and wide view and that game was optimized for VR?
    .... you would find my starved, emaciated body a few weeks later, I guess. I wouldn´t want to leave. :D

  • @EdwardHowton

    See, I don't entirely agree here. When movies add 3D effects just so they can fling a tennisball at the screen while loudly screaming 'LOOK ASSHOLES WE PUT THREE DEE IN THE MOVIE YOU SEE THE TENNISBALL LOOK AT IT IT'S SO FUCKING THREE DEE ARE YOU IMPRESSED YET", I find that obnoxious and pointless.
    I rather prefer the immersive effects, that enhance the movies you're watching but don't make you stop and go WHOOAAA THREEE DEEEEE every time.
    Avatar still resorted to a few obnoxious moments, but it wasn't as bad as most of the other movies that implemented 3D to jump on the bandwagon that flies out of the screen and into your face.
    That said, I faintly remember liking the 3D effects in Ender's Game. They were there, and they added to the movie when they were used, and, if memory serves (it rarely does) they only did the tennisball thing once and didn't exaggerate too much with it.
    Of course, if it's true that 3D effects are attenuated for the larger audience, that's dumb. They really should leave the _third dimension_ into their 3D. I do remember thinking about how little stuff popped out that should have in Avatar. Don't think anyone would disagree with that, apart from fundamentalists who think making visually realistic movies is playing god.
    Fuck those guys, they can stay with their cave paintings.

    • @EvanBlax

      3D post-conversions can look good too, it's just that Hollywood doesn't care.
      A good movie that demonstrates this is the IMAX documentary, Hubble 3D, from 2011. Only about half was shot with real 15 perf 70mm IMAX film cameras, the rest of the live action (interior stuff in the ISS) was shot with camcorders and 3D converted in post. You can't really tell the difference, which I'd chalk up to the movie being written, directed, and edited by IMAX's own Toni Myers, who would have definitely wanted the 3D converted stuff to match up as close as possible to the scenes shot on film.
      Hollywood just doesn't care about good 3D. Hell, even IMAX doesn't really care about making good 3D documentaries anymore, which I guess makes sense with Toni Myers passing away a few year ago.

      @@EvanBlax I watched IMAX space station 3D recently and the 3D in that was amazing. There's an effect in 3D that I call "it's coming right at you!", where some object protrudes extravagantly from the projected plane, that I dislike immensely. It seems, however, that every movie presented in 3D has at least one of them (I think it was a spear or an arrow in Avatar).
    The flip side of this was the Conan movie that came out in the last few years, where the really close stuff was few and far between, but the sweeping shots of open plains with mountains in the background looked AMAZING. Really deep.

      Williamz I heard this when the movie first came out and was tempted to see it. But modern 3D always gives me a massive headache and supposedly there wasn't much to it aside from the 3D, so I gave it a pass.

    I will say one thing. I've used these fairly nice 3-D glasses at the Liberty Science Center for one of their movies once. The movie was far from the best for 3-D, but the glasses were like half-decent sunglasses and even flat things actually popped a bit, despite that not being the big focus.

    Where the hell is Ross?

  • @threemoo
    @threemoo 8 лет назад

    Ross... I'm a game dev and studied physics for a damn long time...
    I have some big points to mention.
    *1.* I have an Oculus Rift DK2 for development, and when done right, you fear how good it does it... and you'll cry tears of joy at how insanely exhilarating something like Mario Kart can get in pure VR 3D... Yes, Mario Kart is deadly on the Motion Sickness front though! :P
    *2.* Everything you pointed out on the "Good 3D, old movie" was small on screen, that gives it the ability to come out all the way due to the fact that it can be completely within the screen from each eye from your POV... This is why you either watch a movie in 3DIMAX, or not in 3D at all... Try watching Pirates of the Caribbean, when the sword gets stabbed through the door, it makes you jump because the depth can go all the way because it's super thin.
    *3.* The majority of what you said about modern day stuff I agree with... but the technology that all the insane amounts of money went into are actually worthy bits of kit, it's just that the production side of things is complete bullshit these days... I watched the new Star Wars in Stereoscopic 3D in AMC the other day, the 3D wasn't too bad, but I watched the most part without the 3D glasses on because the screen was sooo dim, even without the glasses out door scenes set in a DESERT looked like a gloomy horror movie... Wearing the glasses I actually could NOT see what was going on... it was THAT BAD!!!!
    Comparing that to watching movies on my Oculus Rift on a Giant Screen in a virtual environment.... I felt insulted...
    Plus there nachos tasted like overdated Jalapenos dipped with salty water for a salsa dip. (That is a serious opinion with zero exaggeration)

    The best 3D I saw was actually in the Jurassic Park re-release.
    When the T-Rex ate the gallimimus, the nearness and the blurriness of the log made me feel like I was hiding with Dr Grant and the kids.
    When Ellie said "Mr Hammond, I think we're back in business" I thought "Yeah, yeah, then the velociraptor pops out" but it popped out inches from my face and I nearly jumped out of my chair.
    So yeah, I think a lot of it's about narative motivation as well.

    I played some 3D games that actually used the red/blue anaglyph glasses, instead of some gimmicky headset, and it was amazing. I do NOT get motion sickness. Well, I didn't until I tried out a flying game on the oculus. I banked 90 degrees and almost threw up on the camera.

    Hey Ross, I've worn an occulus one for a school project and I will say it was fairly impressive. I personally got a headache after half an hour but I attribute that to the low resolution of the student made games I played. It isn't real 3d like you like thoigh. Stuff doesn't pop out at you, but that's because everything is always popped out at you. The screen is 2 inches from your eyes and you are totally immersed. I hope you enjoy it upon release.

    I got to try an oculus rift, and it was incredible. I played this visual simulation, and it put me in a variety of environments, from dense forests to claustrophobic rooms, and car crash happened right in front of me, and finally I fell off of a building. It all felt so real, I actually had to close my eyes when I started falling. It was really the most immersive experience of my life.

    The only good experiences I've had with 3D both come from elementary school years.
    When I was maybe like 9 or 10 I used to like to see IMAX documentaries downtown, and I was able to convince my teacher to get us to go on a field-trip to the IMAX theatre to see one of the new, 3D movies on the space race. That shit rocked. The huge scream, powerful surround sound speakers and fantastic 3D made it a moment to remember. I can still vividly recall smoke from the rocket blurring my vision as it came out of the screen and flinching in one scene because an orange came hurdling right at me. No movie has topped those effects, in terms of 3D being worth it.
    The other experience was in the arcade near my house where they had one of those games where you put on a gun and a helmet and you're still standing. The graphics weren't great, but the 3D ruled. Can't find the game now to save my life. Wish I could. It was essentially a DOOM clone with some low resolution models and 3D effects. Played the hell out of that, Raiden, PacMan co-op with my dad and Street Fighter 2.

    Tron Legacy was SO disappointing in 3D. That franchise? That universe? That was MADE for 3D! I mean come on! Light cycles? Disc-fights? Those things should have been zooming out of the screen! It should have been INCREDIBLE!

    This was great! Especially that ending. I've yet to be properly impressed by virtual reality 3D and I can't say I'm completely sold on putting a device on my face like that. I'd be up for Nintendo's New 3DS method that does the head tracking but on a larger, more detailed screen size. That would be cool for me, I don't want to wear something on my head like that, but maybe if I try the rift at some point and like it, I could see me using it for some games probably. I dunno, the 3DS gives me headaches if I play in 3D for too long, but I think even on the XL the screen is too small for the effect to make much of a difference.

    I tried the 1st version of Oculus rift (the blocky, ugly, low res development kit) about a year ago on a "geek" roadshow (they had google glass, some funny scientific stuff and "geeky" stuff like that) and I tried this swingset/ catapult demo, where you would sit in a big metal swingset they have on funfairs and theme parks that spins around higher and higher, eventually you slip from your seat and you get catapulted into the air, you fly over the city and you eventually crash into the ground.
    The whole thing was low res, and my eyes were unable to focus at anything specific, which was VERY awkward (it was even worse because I wear dioptric glasses), but my god, it was amazing and scary experience at the same time. They even had a surround headset to go with it, and the atmosphere of the whole setup reminded me of those "in your face" old 3d movies so much and it was awesome. So yeah, when they tweak it and make it so that your brain doesn't hurt after 2 minutes of usage, I think it has potential.

    As someone who tried the oculus rift and other VR headsets the biggest issue was the resolution. I felt like I pressed my face up against my old 90s television. Though they say the resolution will be increasing in the next models I will take a new high res and frame rate monitor for gaming over VR.
    Though the head tracking is impressive it does not give you a feeling of 3D because the images are still flat.

    the good thing about all these VR headsets is that this 3D works like real life 3D
    thanks to the fact that there are actually 2 screens in most of these things your eyes actually see 2 different images instead of 3D glasses bullshit where you just have glasses with 2 different lenses and as soon as you tilt your head or look at the screen from a funny angle the 3d falls apart

    One of the only movie's I've seen in 3d in the current way is Coraline, and that had a 3D effect I had not seen tried before in any of the red and blue ones(Which I all didn't like how they looked and the glasses were awkward over my real glasses). Coraline was good about the things actually coming off the screen and such, but the effect I'm talking about is her entering her room in the other world. The paper cranes fly into the scene from OFF of the screen. They don't come out, they go in. And that is my favorite use of 3D ever.

    I agree on the "3D should be super intense" part. I've only seen one 3D movie-okay, I lie, but one I remember. I don't remember why I was watching it or when, but it was something like nat geo that was in an imax 3d theater-it was a curved screen before curved tvs were a thing. The seats were up high, in groups, and away from the screen. When it started, I wasn't too impressed. Then there was this underwater shot where there were fish swimming. THAT was amazing. I actually had to take my glasses off for a few seconds because of how much depth there was-it felt REAL.
