2024 and it still hurts. I'm not a leeds fan, nor a newcastle or bolton fan, BUT I remember where I was when I heard/saw the news of his passing, and it still hurts. RIP Mr Gary Speed! RIP!
Thinking of Speedo a few days after what should have been his 54th birthday. More than a player, he was a giant of the game, and a thoroughly lovely and decent man all round. He's still much missed by so many. Rest easy, Speedo. You will never, ever be forgotten, and you will always be loved.
I've never been more sad at the death of somebody I didn't know. He obviously a class act on and off the pitch. I've learnt a lot from Gary speed in what it means to be a man.
I cant believe watching this in 2024, that it was in 2011 when the we heard the awful news of Gary Speeds passing, time has gone by but his loss hasn't diminished, such was his standing in the world of football & I'm sure, the man himself..
I remember the day it was announced …I was in Hereford in a football pub and people were crying ..men included…the sadness is less today but still there

It’s 2024 and it’s still such a shocking experience to think back on. Never played for my teams but I remember as a child knowing he was the highest class of what a professional footballer should be. So sad to think of the pain he was carrying in his heart to lead to his decision and I can only hope his family found peace in the love and respect so many had for Gary. RIP.
I feel privileged that both of my nans were friends with Gary speed when they worked at elland road they both worked cleaning the kits n they always tell me stories of him having jokes n playing little pranks on them. He also treated them to dinner and bought them a new dress every once in a while a true classy gentleman Gary was RIP mate marching on together💙💛🙏🏻
Everton fan. I was absolutely gutted the day he left us for you lot. When he would return to Goodison, the crowd were vile to him. Then years later we found out what he had to deal with at the club (Kendals drinking, and pretty much having to manage the side), fully understood why he ended up leaving the club he loved.

Everyone at the time knew the reason Speed left for Newcastle was because of the state his boyhood club was in and tbf is still in now.

Unfortunately only until someone takes their life do people think this way . He had not one reason to make anyone that knew him that he had issues going on. I've noticed the people that talk about it are also labeled attention seekers or get told to either snap out of it or pull themselves together. Lots more awareness 10 years later regarding mental health but this is all online and we need to live in a real world . I've seen stacks of mental awareness videos on social media platforms and its all about one thing, making money . Do people really get sucked to these people and organisations online thinking they're bothered about your mental health? They want your money , nothing else
I remember the day Gary appeared on football focus on the Saturday, he was loved by all in the world of football fantastic career, he had a beautiful family and home, no money worries, still to this day i can't understand why he decided to take his own life, his wife and sons absolutely him, WHY OH WHY DID HE DO THIS
The awful question is was this legend of a man so haunted by abuse he endured as an aspiring young footballer, that he took his own life? Football needs opening up to this possibility so that other young players, who endure or have endured this type of horrific abuse, feel they can come forward. That at least would provide a profund good, out of a profound loss.
