Video title is misleading, you are replacing a starter on an N52 engine this engine package was not available on these pre 2007, anything older than has an m54 engine in it that’s a totally different engine to work on.

The N52. An engine by German engine designers to mock British and American mechanics working on them 15 years later.

Now that is a lot of work I pray its not my starter. This looks like a ton of work and you may want to replace other wear items while your in there.
My 2009 X3 3.0 started kind of weird like a Slow crank but battery is only 3 months old. Car almost did not start the next time I went to start it just a click. Tried to jump start and no luck. I knew it was not the battery.
I wonder if Starter or some kind of fuse or relay that someone else mentioned could be problem.
Anyway thanks for the video nice to see whats involved

The starter location on the n52 engine is a sick joke 😂
Ill be diving in this week
Thankyou for the detailed video 👍
Edit: this video ONLY pertains to the N52 engine which was found in 2007 and later models. An older BMW X3 is a different process where you can get to the starter form underneath the car

This is for 2007-2010 vehicles, not 2004-2006, as the earlier models have the M54 engine and not the N52.

Wait... I did my 2005 X3 with a 5 speed transmission years ago. I remember doing this from underneath the vehicle and reaching around the transmission and being able to access all the bolts and swapping it out this way.
Much Much Much less involved. I just got a neck cramp. I used some rachet extensions/adapters. I am not sure how much different automatic transmissions are (my guess is that this video depicts an automatic trans).

Hey TRQ, thanks so much for the amazing info and steps you provide. I have a BMW X3 2008 and have trouble locating the starter relay. Does it even have a starter relay? Getting mixed information in the forums online. Don't have the full fuse info on the car. Just the ones in the glove box. I checked there's power going to starter and signal also when key is turned. Still no crank no click. Does that mean starter is bad?

Any special technique to tightening the back starter bolt? Looks like a tight area that might be hard getting a torque wrench back there. Curious because I plan on doing this myself soon and I noticed it wasn’t recorded in this video. Thank you 🙏🏽

    I did it from underneath in a X3 2006 automatic E83 type.
It is possible but man, I still seeing nightmares remembering when I loosened those f*ing screws, I wish the BMW engineers a long life full of flimsy toilet paper…
