    I have been watching three videos so far and I LOVE them all! I especially like the taxi in, as this can be just as complicated as the flight itself! Many flight videos just drop the taxi in or they severly shorten it, but yours show it all and I LOVE that! Many thanks for producing these videos! You are doing an excellent job!

      Thank you so much for the very friendly words! Nice to hear that you like my videos! I usually keep the taxiing in real time in the videos. Everybody who does not like it can just skip it. In this video, I removed several minutes of waiting time before we were allowed to continue to the gate. We were just waiting and nothing happened. Even almost no other traffic around. Have a great day!

    I always love your videos, especially regarding the CRM and the post-flight assesment. I guess Eurowings has a very good CRM culture, and the pilots are permitted to hand-fly quite often, of course when the conditions permit. Keep it up, Capt. Your kind of content is rare in RUclips 👍

      Thanks for your wishes. Also all the best to you! Taxiing on the ground cen be challenging, especially on large airports. But we have good taxi charts and the apron or ground controller is also able to help if instructios are misunderstood or not 100 percent clear. The good thing is that we can always stop on the ground and ask.

      Thanks for watching and your thoughts! It is sometimes not that easy to navigate through the taxiway systems of large airports. But our charts are good. And often we know our parking position already in the air. If this is the case, we brief before the landing the expected taxi route from the runway to the parking position.

    Super Video! Was bedeutet eigentlich das "VLS Check" bei 7:24 wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +1

      Danke fürs Anschauen und das gute Feedback! VLS check bedeutet, dass wir 2 verschiedene VLS (lowest selectable speed) vergleichen, die das Flugzeug anzeigt. Eine wird vom Flightmanagement Computer auf Basis des vom Loadsheet eingegebenen Gewichts plus aktuellem Sprit berechnet. Die andere VLS wird com FAC Computer aufgrund von aerodynamischen Daten und der eingegebenen Lage des Schwerpunkts errechnet und auf dem PFD angezeigt. Falls die PFD VLS höher ist als die FMGS VLS, erhöhen wir die Anfluggeschwindigkeit entsprechend.

  • @alexrobb
    @alexrobb Год назад +2

    Another lovely video, the inclusion of the PFD/ND is really excellent. One curiosity though, for an ILS approach is it SOP for you to engage both APs regardless of conditions? Something I hadn't noticed elsewhere!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the good and helpful feedback! It is standard Airbus SOP to engage both autopilots during all ILS approaches, regardless of conditions. To fly a CAT 1 ILS, like in the video, one autopilot would be ok too. But if this autopilot fails, no autopilot would be on anymore. If you switch on both autopilots, this would not happen because the remaining autopilot would continue.

    I have been watching a bunch of your videos and love all of them but i cant seem to figure out when you use flap 3 and flap full

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and for your friendly feedback! Airbus allows landings with flaps 3 or flaps full. The pilot flying decides whatever she or he wants. Flaps 3 needs a touch less fuel, but the speed is 5 knots faster which will need more braking and a little longer landing distance. In addition, the pitch is higher during a flap 3 landing. My average flaps full landing is better than a flaps 3 landing. The reason may be that I did several thousand flaps full landings and way less flaps 3 landings with the Airbus.

    • @benchi7911
      @benchi7911 2 года назад

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +1

      Depending on the flight management and guidance system, there may be 2 diferent VLS indications during the final approach. One on the primary flight display and one on the MCDU. The PFD VLS is calculated from aerodynamical data, the remaining fuel and the entered CG. The MCDU VLS is calculated on the basis of the entered weight from the loadsheet. If the PFD VLS is higher, we add that value to the approach speed in the MCDU.

    Very good debrief, is it quite easy to flare a bit too much with the sidestick?

    • @devansh8846
      @devansh8846 2 года назад +2

      Good question! I guess flare is all about feeling and visual cues. Everything happens in few seconds (8 seconds technically). Good and not so good flare can happen with anyone, anytime. No matter how experienced you're. Winds, weight, CG etc affects the flare. Good/smooth landing is just a bonus. Pilots usually aim for aiming point and centreline. It will be interesting to see Captain has to say about this.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +4

      During the flare, we ideally reduce the descent rate to zero at the moment the main gear of the airplane touches not too far into the runway the ground. This is much easier said than done. For us pilots, every flare is different. It starts with a differnet airplane: A319, 320, 321, different engines, sharklets, weight, CG and different enviromental conditions. The result usually varies from day to day.

    Really an awesome channel.
    I have a quick technical question: i wonder if the apu usually on when landing or after, before going to the gate ?.... or not ?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Год назад

      Thanks for watching, the feedback and your question! Usually we start the APU 1 minute or so after landing. This gives us the possibility to switch off one engine after a 3 minutes cooldown period. Or, if we arrive already at the gate after 3 minutes, we switch off both engines at the gate. At the gate, the APU is used until the ground crew connects external power or / and as long as we need it for air conditioning reasons.

    Another great video from your channel. Like yourself and others have said, self assessment and self critique is vital in our industry and we should all practice it when the time is right so it’s nice to see that from you and your FO. I fly Boeing, I’m not too knowledgeable when it comes to airbus so forgive me but i have one question - for us the flare is a visual manoeuvre, passing 100ft our we should be focused 100% outside at the aiming point and as we pass over the threshold at 50ft we shift our visual aiming point to aid with depth perception during the flare and landing however here I can see on your PFD you guys get a FLARE annunciation and FD guidance and interestingly your FO is looking at the instruments during the flare. So I guess what I’m asking is for yourselves, is the flare and landing a visual as well as instrument based manoeuvre. Keep up the great content!

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching and your thoughts. In general, all visual maneuvers, like a visual approach, the flare .... should be done in a way that the instruments are still a part of the scanning. In an Airbus 319 or 320 the flare usually begins sometime between 20 and 30 feet. The main focus is outside. But it is a good idea to continue scanning your PFD. It gives you valuable information which for sure will help during the flare.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Год назад +1

      Munich airport has an elevation of 1450 feet. You need to take that into account and add it to the altitudes you are stating. The gear was lowered at about 7 nautical miles from the threshold or 2200 feet above the runway elevation. If we would have lowered the gear at 2000 feet MSL, that would have been only 500 feet above the ground and way too late for a stabilized approach.

    Love the hand flying approach. It’s interesting how regulators like the FAA in the US are now calling for pilots to hand fly where sensible so that pilots remain familiar with things should automation fail.
    Automation is an overall win but not a panacea.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +3

      Thanks for watching and your question. Flaps 3 and flaps full are both Airbus approved landing configurations. During normal operations, the pilot can choose his or her preferred position. During abnormal operations, autoland or overweight, depending on the Airbus variant, a certain configuration may be required by the Airbus procedures. This is all trained during the typerating. The pitch is higher during flaps 3 landings.

      Thanks for watching and for your question. The barometric altimeter shows the elevation of the airport or the runway when on ground. Munich has an elevation of about 1400 feet. So you see an indication of 1400 feet on the barometric altimeter. If you would operate from an airport which is located at sea level, the barometric altimeter shows zero on the ground. The radio altimeter shows the height above the terrain. On ground, it shows always zero and in flight it shows how high the airplane is flying above the terrain underneath.

      @@ApproachandDepartureVideos Thank you for answering. Appreciate it. So I guess QNH, QFE and altitude settings help in correction.

    Thank you for another great video and happy new year. I can see that a lot of the time you are in open descent and using the spoilers actively. Is this because there can be discrepancies between the planned profile and what is actually instructed? Would it be preferred to be in managed descent and fly the profile or does it not matter at all? Thank you. 🙂

      Thanks for watching and your good wishes! If we enter the full Munich approach in the flight management system, the distance is very long and the descent is calculated on that distance. We already assumed that we would get shortcuts towards the final approach. So we descended with open descent and stayed under the vertical path of the full approach. At the end it got even shorter and our energy level was a little high. Then we used open descent and speedbrakes to get back to a normal descent path. Have a great day!
