    Very clear scenery as you get close to Salzburg - excellent video again. One question that i would like to ask. The radio altimeter was doing its call out as you were going directly over some buildings. So, was the height to the roof top, or was it clever enough to adjust for the ground? I guess low factories like in Salzburg it doesnt matter much... but what if were tall apartment buildings?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +4

      Thanks for watching and your question.
      The radio altimeter is not intelligent. He transmits a signal down, it gets somehow reflected and comes back to the altimeter. Even if you walk underneath the antenna when you are on the ground, you see a change in altitude. And yes, if you fly over a building and the signal is reflected by the roof, the radio altimeter will show the altitude of the airplane over the roof. But this is not a problem. It even is good because it shows our altitude over the structure.
      The real accuracy of the radio altimeter is only needed when we are at very low altitudes for the autoflight system. There are hopefully no buildings and ithe radio altimeter shows the altitude above the paved runway.

      @@givenfirstnamefamilyfirstn3935 Years ago, I was visiting San Diego and took photos of the arriving planes on runway 27 from the upper parking deck of one of the buildings. It was really impressive how close they came in. In general, you can always say, that in front of a runway which is used for precision approaches and autolands, no high obstacles are possible. Especially the area infront of the threshold has to be flat. Even a dip before the runway would remove any autoland possibilities.

    Warum zeigt der Höhenmesser noch 1400 ft an, obwohl das Flugzeug bereits am Boden ist?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 месяца назад

      Der Höhenmesser zeigt die Höhe des Flugplatzes an. Salzburg liegt in 1400 Fuß. Wenn wir in Amsterdam wären, würde er unter Null anzeigen. In Düsseldorf zeigt er 120 Fuß an. Das ist jeweils die Höhe über dem Meeresspiegel.

    Many thanks for an exceptional cockpit video.
    I thought I heard Tower say _‘cleatlaa’_ in an Austrian accent. I then though it was most impressive for the crew to request ‘confirm cleared to land’, removing any ambiguity is a much better procedure than in the U.S. I saw in a lower down/earlier comment how your normal landing checks were interrupted and how you rightly started again including landing clearance given. Approach giving speeds until distances out was nice. Arriving in Salzburg in daylight is a special feast for the eyes.

    It is interesting to see how airports manage ground traffic differently. This one has a "follow me" which must be a great help saving you from having to work out where to go on a complicated layout. Likewise there is someone guiding you onto the exact spot for disembarking. Not many seem to have the "follow me" and some have the guide but not all, they are such a good idea I'm surprised they are not more common.
    Thank you again Sir.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  Год назад +1

      The "follow me" cars are a great help and make taxiing to the parking position very easy. It depends on the airport if they provide the service. My observation is that the airports reduced the number of these cars over the years to save some money. Instead they provide better taxiway and apron markings and parking stands with automatic guide in systems.

    • @HarryJeffery
      @HarryJeffery 2 года назад +2

      He's referring to the flight mode annunciators (FMAs) at the top of the primary flight display (PFD). These show what the autopilot is doing. In green it shows what mode the autopilot is currently in. In blue, it shows what mode is "armed". For instance, "localiser blue" means the localiser mode of the autopilot is armed, so once the aircraft is aligned with the runway, the autopilot will switch to localiser mode to stay in line with the runway for landing.

      Many thanks for watching and for the question.
      I assume that you mean the phrase „Ecam Memo Landing No Blue“ from the pilot monitoring and me as pilot flying answering „landing no blue“. This is our landing checklist. We prepare the airplane for landing and when the flaps and the gear are extended .. these items are elecronically checked. If we for example would not extend the gear, „ldg gear down“ would be still in blue color on the display. Everything which is done is displayed in green. This does not include that we are cleared to land or that we already have the runway in sight or so.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +2

      And to add one information: At about 400 to 350 feet on the radio altimeter, LAND shall be displayed on the FMA area of the PFD. You can see that in our video. The pilot flying calls that out. LAND on the FMA means that LOC and GS are locked and that FLARE and ROLLOUT modes are coming next. In general, this is a final check that the flight management and guidance system is ready to continue the approach for a landing. With the autopilot on, it would even do an automatic landing. (Sure, you are only allowed to that on approved runways with the protections of the Localizer and Glideslope signals in progress.)

      Thanks for the good feedback and the suggestions about the takeoff videos. Yes, I will publish one or even more during the next time. Please stay tuned. We were cleared to land early. A while after we got the landing clearance, we were disturbed a little in our normal flow because we had no green landing memo on the ECAM. The cabin ready line was not in green, like usual. To confirm that the cabin was ready to land, he called the cabin to find out. Then we confirmed our landing checklist.
      If we are not 100 percent sure, we always ask to confirm. Better to ask and get the clearance a second time as to land without clearance.
