@@Ludee27 that’s not true at all. Zoro and Sanji aren’t the same character. Sanjis character had rooted ties to his family. Zoro does not. Why would we see zoro and his family if it doesn’t do anything to him as a character. That’s just poor writing. Oda doesn’t pick and chose who deserves good writing based on his favorite characters. His favorite characters are Luffy and Gaimon as stated multiple times by him. Sanjis getting good writing because that’s what his character needed. Zoros a completely different character. @@Sammy123ABC you didnt watch the video did you ? it was about the Statement from Fans that "Oda hates Sanji" wich is clearly wrong. His character Development is insane. but its odd that we havent seen any real character development from Zoro yet. Has he moved on from the stoic swordman who cuts down foes and opens up and shows a bit more of himself ? no and RIght NOW One piece moves onto the Last big things the story is closing in. Zoro has not shown any kind of Weakness of himself besides the need for strength because that is his only weakness. that he thinks he HAS to be as strong as possible. or else he wouldnt be of service. thats the Only weakness Of Zoro. wich he has NOT overcome. not even when Sanji was saving him while he was unconcious. THe sole Purpose of the video was that Sanji is Firstly insanely well ridden. and that Oda is not hating him. IDK how you bring up Zoro in your statement
@@zunhaalviik4473 I brought up Zoro because of the original comment dude 🤦♂️. If you read my comment I more than anyone hate bringing them up in the same sentence when it comes to writing because they aren’t the same character. Zoro has received immense character writing and development throughout the series. That’s how zoros character is written. His weakness is having to choose between his dream and his captain like we see in thriller bark. I’m the beginning of the series he says if it’s between luffy or his dream he’s picking his dream. Which isn’t the case in thriller bark. In reality he’s always going to pick luffy. But that is his weakness which is protecting his crew. And weakness doesn’t have to be in every character to make them a good character either. It adds nuance but doesn’t necessarily makes a good character. Zoros character isn’t written like sanjis. Zoro is written throughout the series in each arc adding more nuance and depth each important arc. Same with sanj but not as much because sanjis character is more tested at whole cake. We see him grow to love his new family only to inevitably face his past at whole cake. All the depth and development added in whole cake gets more explored even after whole cake in wano. Zoro is getting character development and depth but just not in the same way as sanji. And your confusing that with no character development at all. And again ik the purpose of the video was that sanji is well written and not hated by oda and I couldn’t agree more but I was just replying to the other guy.
22:04 tbh i wouldn't be so sure about the enhancements not effecting Sanji. Knowing how much character focus he gets, and seeing how Kuma nearly lost all his will, I could see a similar thing happening to Sanji. Looking at Zoro, a man who values his promises like nothing else, i can see him having to confront that promise of having to killing Sanji coming up later down the line (whether or not he follows through is besides the point)
Sanji has been through so much. He could've become bitter and angry at it all but instead he became an extremely kind person. That alone makes me respect his character
Sanji's inportance is actually emphasized by that one chapter/anime episode named "The Chore Boy and the Chef" a vhapter literally titled after the two
Sanji asking for help also is great character development regarding his self-sacrificial nature. Over the course of the series, we've seen that he's always so willing to sacrifice himself for everyone, and in WCI, we learn why-he has zero self-worth thanks to his traumatic past, and sees himself as someone whose value lies in what he can do for others, for being useful. He sees himself as someone expendable. Him asking Robin for help shows that he's finally seeing value in himself now; that he's finally realizing that his friends don't love him for what he can do, they love him for who he is.
Oda gave this man two back stories, a dedicated arc, and literal character development (instead of just giving him raw strength) more so than the rest of the Straw Hats. How people think this means Oda hates him is insane.
@@Rosso4654 Aside from Luffy and Robin I don't really see it. The rest have arcs that they are key players for sure, but it's not really dedicated to them.
@@willbrown6298 Well nami and usopp defo have ones. I'd go as far as to say that Brook has his own arc with him being the center character of Thriller Bark.
Man, a lot of people hated that scene when Sanji asked for help. I just thought that was crazy. I thought it was awesome. I think Robin is awesome Awesome and she should be in more fights anyways.
He doesn't hurt women because his mom and his sister are the only ones who were soo kind to him, while he was bullied by his dad and brothers, he respects women
Sanji is always gonna be hated by the fans if oda just keeps the pervy gag in him. It also doesn't help sanji redemption considering zoro and luffy will always have the better feats than sanji . No matter how much power up oda gave to sanji , he will always be hated bcs of his pervy gag. The only way for him to be considered reedemable by fans is by him overcoming his pervy gag but i doubt that will happen anyways considering how things are looking right now. It's kinda sad considering i really love sanji character bcs I see him as the smarter and cool strawhat male member before the timeskip eventhough his strength are never gonna surpass zoro and luffy. But now sanji fans are just gonna get bashed no matter what since op fans only cares about fighting scenes and hyped up characters meanwhile forget to appreciate well written characters like sanji. And sanji will probably still be hated no matter what.😢
As an amateur writer, I confirm that the more you love a character, the more you mock him :D It's like you're raising a child and you don't want to spoil him too much.
Something I really like with that black maria scene is how it works with how Sanji has such a low opinion of himself, and doesn't want to be a burden to anyone, so he's very self-sacrificing, and he's finally starting to grow out of that. When he and Zoro are faced with Kuma at Thriller Bark, Zoro sees himself as the protector of the crew, and the only other member who may rival how dangerous Luffy will be in the future. Sanji however is just willing to throw his life down because he sees himself as replaceable, he even tells Zoro "sorry, you guys will have to find another cook." When Sanji gets the letter summoning him to Whole Cake, he underestimates how much the rest of the crew values him, and how far they're willing to go for him, that's how much he doesn't want to trouble anyone else on his behalf, he thinks it's easy to walk away (which is why Zoro acts like a bratty teenager when he hears about it). Even Luffy screaming that he can't become the pirate king without Sanji wasn't enough to fully get through to him.
The fact that people thought Wano arc is going to be Zoro's time to shine. And yet the said Arc was just a continuation of Sanji's character development, really proves the point this video is implying.

Oda signs his name with Sanji’s eyebrow Oda gave Sanji 2 backstories and 1 whole arc Oda named Sanji’s restaurant “ Baratie “ based on a Restaurant called “ Baratei “ where Oda used to work part-time at Oda created Reiju a nice older sister for Sanji becus Oda has an older sister Oda shares a lot of traits with Sanji such as Smoking, Perviness and Gentleness ( Favorite foods too I guess ) It looks like Sanji is Oda himself and if so Sanji might end up with Nami as Oda married a real-life Nami
@@rajeshwar9329 I honestly doubt Sanji would end up saving Pudding, I think it might be Big Mom since it's implied she's alive and when it comes to the Nami thing, there's a lot more evidence supporting that pairing than the Pudding one.
@@rajeshwar9329 the romances are weird. I myself am not so sure about Pudding. Yes, she actually feels something for him, but so did Viola. I guess that Pudding has "the lead" on Viola since she did kiss him, had more moments and is more recent in the fan's minds. But there is one thing that would "disqualify" Pudding, the same thing as Viola. When Nami was in trouble, Sanji "dumped" both of them for Nami in a heartbeat. So I wouldn't write Nami off yet, she is clearly Sanji's number one and this is proven again and again. There are more Sanji/Nami moments in WCI than Sanji/Pudding, that's just a fact. But not even Nami is a sure thing. Oda also said that there wouldn't be any romance between crewmates and it would complicate things and feel out of place. Just like Sanji has Pudding and Viola, Zoro has Hiyori and Tashigi. In any other story and if it was just the one character, these "ships" would be clear, but they're not. Romance is complicated/non existent in One Piece. So no idea. It's also possible that Oda will leave the ending open and leave fans to speculate who ended up with who.
"Sanji is a character full of love. Hell, you could say he loves too much" You almost made me cry at the end there. Sanji is my favorite character so this video was like music to my ears. I especially loved how you explained that the young Sanji took Zeff's ideals to the exreme cause of his childish nature. Many people forget that Sanji, even now as an adult, has this childish, Luffy-like side to him. A favorite small moment of mine is on Skypiea when Luffy, Chopper and Usopp are playing around in the clouds, Zoro and Sanji are watching them and talking like two adults... Then Sanji throws off his shoes and jumps in like "YAHOOO" lol. I just fucking love how versatile Sanji is, there's just so much to talk about and dissect. Anyways. I hope you make more Sanji videos in the future! Subscribed.
Sanji has always been, is and will always be my favorite strawhat. I think there's a trend of hating him and people love hopping on the bandwagon. Anyone who has read the manga for what it is would realize that Sanji is not only one of the most complex strawhats, but also one of the most reliable, empathetic, value-driven, coolest strawhats. I almost feel like the gag was made to nerf him a little so he wouldn't be too perfect, and even then I still find it funny from time to time. Probably because I grew up watching anime and I'm used to it as a gag in pretty much all of shonen
Exactly, I’m glad someone understands. Most of the time, the whole swooning over women thing does make me laugh. And on the VERY few problematic times, I don’t obviously…but unlike most “perv” characters in anime, those Sanji moments are VERY few and far between. While for every other perv character their behavior is almost ALWAYS problematic.
About Sanji\Robin situation. It's both not so deep and layered at the same time, if you think about it. Black Maria specifically told him to call for Robin, not just any other person, so he clearly had no other option other than her. But him really doing that does show his character growth. In older times he'd rather die than put someone's life on the line instead of his own, let alone doing that to a woman. But this moment works not only for Sanji, but for Robin as well, like they get each other. They were in the same situation, they tried to leave the crew and trade their lives for safety of who they cherish, because they thought that the enemy is to big and powerfull and they are not worthy anyway. But the crew fought for them and won, showing that together they are strong, that they can depend on each other and that the crew basically cherish them back. But not only that. The whole thing "you can do what I can't and I can do what you can't" is displayed here. Sanji can never defeat Black Maria. We know it, crew knows it, Sanji knows it very well. And strawhats reaction showed exactly that, exept for Jimbe, because he wasn't with them for that long to know what's up. And Sanji know that Robin is strong and can handle it and he has other shit to do as one of the main fighters on the crew. That's like a direct callback to fight with Kalifa when Nami asked him did he really do everythig to win it, and if he couldn't then he could run away. Nami did what Sanji couldn't do so he would ba able to do what he could. Now Robin can do that for him, and she knows that the crew got her back as well. Him not fighting women is arguably not the character flaw but a trait, even Oda told us that in SBS. He just wouldn't do it and that the way he is.
He also logistically couldn't call for help from anyone besides Robin. He can't call for any of the male crew members because his code of honor wouldn't allow him to let them fight her, and Nami would have probably lost to Black Maria, but Sanji had faith that Robin could win. So in sanji's mind Black Maria was giving him a very reasonable request
A creator called MelonTree made two videos, one on just for sanji and the other discussing both sanji and Zoro. I highly recommend both as the creator deep dives into sanjis character
You’re actually downplaying how big the moment was for Robin. Keep in mind that one of the main reasons Robin left the crew in Water 7 was that she fully believed that the crew would betray her one day because she was too much of a burden. Robin understanding that Sanji called for her not to sell her out, but because he has that much trust in her, is a huge showing of how much she’s grown since then.
7:02 i LOVED the scene where Sanji called out for Robin’s help and she came to help 🥺 Sanji understanding his value and Robin having the chance to help her family 😭😭 im finna cry all over again
It’s EASILY the best strawhat moment for me, the amount of understanding Sanji has without even TRYING is so beautiful. Like if Robin didn’t thank him for it he probably wouldn’t have even realised how amazing what he just did was because it came so naturally to him
@@Ludee27 no fr 😭 people overlook it for whatever reason but they’ve both come so far and they acknowledge their individual worths while also knowing they can trust their crew mates
Also Sanji asking Robin for help mirrors Robin's big I want to live moment. It's Sanji who had a quiet death drive always pushing himself as the sacrificial lamb because he saw it as him being useful. So it's Sanji asking Robin for help is Sanji choosing to live rather than sacrifice himself.
14:35 It's not off, though. Yes, the phrasing is weird, but it is his role during the battles, he is the one thinking a couple of steps ahead with Mr. Prince, sabotaging Maxim, waiting at the train station, closing the Gates of Justice, etc. Let's take Luffy out of the equation for a minute, let's focus on Zoro and Sanji. Zoro will win you any single fight you put him in. But throw him in a gauntlet as it happened at the end of Enies Lobby, and he will reach a point where he cannot move on. Sanji's role is to end the gauntlet, not to defeat the enemies one at a time. Zoro will win you the battle, Sanji will win you the war. Brawn and Brains. That's even reflected even in the names of their mothers! Zoro's is Terra, Earth, and Zoro is earth-bound, strong, an immovable object. Sanji's is Sora, Sky, he metaphorically gets an eagle-eye view of the battlefield (and literally with Sky Walk), and plots the next step. And since we're at it, we don't know the name of his mother, but Jinbe is the "First Son of the Sea," and he is adaptable, wise, and equally calm and dangerous. And if you want to go deeper, even the Ancient Weapons are reflected in the three of them: Pluton, or Hades, Lord of the Underworld (similar to Enma/Yama), which is inside the earth, or Terra. Poseidon, or Neptune, King of the seas. And finally Uranus, or Caelus, God of the sky, or Sora.
6:29 I was a bit surprised when I see that someone has the same thought. When I first saw that scene from the manga I was thinking, wow, no wonder why One Piece is my favorite. I see a full on character grow, being express with such ease in the most irrelevant and comedy like scene. Also, I thought Oda really put a lot of effort in Sanji, and expressed a lot of his own values through him. To me this scene is whole central idea/point of the cake arc and Sanji’s character development. I truly think that the way he came to be is Oda’s, as a writer, trying to push through some of his strong believes in his work. Sanji is from start portrait to be far from traditional masculinity and toughness, and so much fans dislike it making me believe Sanji is personal to him somehow.
People should realize that one piece is more than just power scaling. Most of them think that ,if a character gets more powerups, then they are "favorite characters",but one piece is built different, back stories, emotions is what makes it a masterpiece.Sanji is my favorite character because of how wonderfully he is written 😁
this is what im screaming about to fans about their powerscalling obsession. It literally doesn't exist in one piece. OP is a situational type of fighting. There's a lot of factors at play. DF, Haki, power counters, strategy, and weaknesses. An example enel & kaido. Luffy counters Enel but does that make him weaker to other enemies? Hell no. If Enel was a blue sea pirate he'd be above admiral lvl. And Kaido.. Luffy defeated him once. Does that mean he's stronger than Kaido? No.
Sanji asking Robin for help, especially coming off of the rest of the series and Whole Cake Island specifically, meant a lot to me as someone whose favorite Straw Hat has always been Sanji. He’s hardly, it ever, asked for help himself in the entire series, only ever been quick to show up and offer help to others and sacrifice himself. It’s so wonderful seeing him finally have the strength and confidence in people to ask for help when he needs it. It could be self-reflection after relating to a lot of Sanji’s history, but I for one was so proud of him 💙
I usually find with a good portion of authors that the more they like a character, the more trials and tribulations they’ll put them through. Period. Some authors are more aggressive with this and it may come off as bullying or ‘hateful’ but characters are the toy-box of the story telling world. It’s an oversimplification maybe but the most loved ‘toys’ are the ones who go through the most wear and tear.
Knowing how Oda writes...... Sanji's line of "....if you don't take me in, it won't be long before I'm causing more trouble than the rest of these guys put together" with Kuma could possibly be foreshadowing how powerful and important Sanji would become by the end of the series.
He already became the most dangerous by the end of Wano in terms of everything that he can do to help the crew wether that’s fighting or something else He actually always been the guy to save the strawhat crew with his own solo missions pre time skip I think that’s what Sanji means being very useful all around not just by fighting because Luffy will always be the top fighter
Oda dedicated a huge additional arc, 500+ episodes after Sanji’s introduction to the crew, to further exploring his backstory. He hasn’t done that for any other Straw Hat. There’s no way he dislikes this character.
@@Rosso4654 Right, and even so it was only a few episodes of backstory with Ace and Sabo, Sanji’s was a massive arc dedicated to him and his entire family 😂 I imagine we’ll get more details on Luffy’s past soon (hopefully) but I find it kind of mind blowing how much time and attention to detail Oda has dedicated to perfecting Sanji’s character - and how people still think he hates him!! 😅
I feel like personally that has done the character more harm than good though imo. I felt like giving Sanji a new tragic backstory about his family who just so happens to be genetic superbeings kind of diluted the other backstory's impact that Sanji had with Zeff. After being subjected to his.... "Quirks" (One of his worst moments were in fishman island where he was fucking bedridden due to nosebleeds when looking at women) only to then see that he had rizz the whole time when was with Pudding thus making more angrier.
I’ve never understood why everyone thought Oda hated Sanji, to me i always thought he loved Sanji the most lol. Mans got two whole arcs for crying out loud

7:21 this drawing of Sanji here is really interesting and here’s why First thing I noticed is that Sanji’s outfit here pretty much looks like what you would get if you combined crocodile’s arabasta outfit with Doflamnigo’s outfit that’s what you get And also the other thing is Sanji holding guns now this is particularly interesting because Oda actually drew Sanji with guns A lot even in the main story and the reason why is probably because Oda still loves his original concept of Sanji of him being a gun slinger instead of a kick master
I just saw the concept you said but how did you know it was Sanji's original concept?I thought Oda never mentioned that. And some other people said it was Ussopp's original concept.I'm confused now.
@@dararama3633 Both of them were supposed to have guns at some point maybe not at the same time but both Sanji and usopp at some point were supposed to be gun slingers And the reason why I knew it was Sanji’s original concept is because gun slinger Sanji the concept that I’m talking about specifically has Sanji with black hair and normal eyebrows he pretty much looked like Luffy or something so I think Sanji’s look that we know today came later and along with changing his hair to blonde etc Oda scrapped the gun slinger thing And maybe the reason Oda ended up not giving guns to neither Sanji or usopp is that Oda promised his grandmother to not make a violent manga so that’s why no one in the crew has guns and characters rarely die
The Robin moment is way more than that. He has always been a self loathing character after being called worthless as a child, and only treated kindly by the women in his life. He asked his father to save him; his father said "why?" - leading him to ask Zeff why he would save a stranger, which is not a question a child would ever ask when offered kindness if they didn't have such a traumatizing upbringing. Over and over you see him trying to sacrifice his life, which he believes is worthless - by giving it to Zeff for saving him, by throwing himself in front of strawhats like pushing Usopp oout of the way to take Enel's electricity attack and save Usopp, or even trying to take the Thriller Bark hit from Kuma after telling Zoro he needs to live to pursue his ambition - because Zoro's is worth more and to "find another cook" - because he thinks he is replaceable and disposable. It's different than Zoro's sacrifice because Zoro knows who he is and what his worth is - he's first mate, he promised to never lose again and said his ambitions are worthless if he can't protect his captain - he would never say "find another swordsman" - because that would be to accept failure. Sanji accepting death befor Zoro felt like "Well I'm the most trash person here and I'm sure you'll find someone else who can cook ... it's not really difficult and I'm not really special. So I'll give my worthless life away for better people to survive. and pursure their superior dreams" He continues to to carry this self loathing into whole cake which makes him alienate the strawhats because his life is not worth being a burden to them. When he leaves and his father insults him, Luffy asked something like "why did you just list his best qualities, I thought you hated him" even though the father meant them as an insult. Luffy knows exactly who Sanji is and unconditionally values him for it, along with the others and only when he accepted that was he able to value himself enough to ask Robin for help - and not think it was a burden for his life to be saved. It hits harder because Robin also had to be love-bombed to see her own worth and accept help and finally ask for it. She knows what he had to overcome and so does Nami. Sanji and the strawhat women had to be crushed be fore opening their eyes enough to see that the love being offered had no string, and no expectations - it was about how valuable and worth saving they are as people - without caveat. It's special because it's something he shares with the women who have become his family. From a practical perspective I would pick Robin to literally out-arm Maria but what she did, no one saw coming - everything about it was perfect. Sanji has had the most growth and it's not even close - he has come to accept and value himself enough to truly depend upon his crew because he finally knows the crew is not whole without him, he has finally escaped the stormy cloud of what his father did to him in making him hate and devalue himself for so long. His crew made his see that and he's letting them love him. The slow-motion scene where Nami pounce-hugs Luffy in the furry's dress ... Zoro immediately knows something is wrong. The heartbreak viceral from Nami when he left, Robin awakening her full potential to protect him, those girls have his back and adore him despite how ridiculous he can be - that doesn't come from anyone who's ever been disrespected and those are not characters who tolerate disrespect. Nami will beat them all down and Robin just has to say a quiet, terrifying word to get immediate results. I also wish Zoro got more than some stongman bastian treatment - I still love him though - I don't see a purpose in picking a favourite.
The interaction between Sanji and Robin is one of my favourite moments in the series. Sanji overcame the barrier of being self sacrificing and not wanting to be a burden to his crew mates and for Robin to have someone trust her completely, causing her to embrace her “demon child” persona. Very cathartic for both
To be relied on by literally like one of the TOP 3 GUYS IN THE CREW is such an honour when you consider that guys like Zoro and Sanji are usually the ones saving the rest of the crew and taking on most of the burden
Sanji calling out to Robin for help was such a big moment because it helped solidify what a huge amount of respect Sanji actually has for Women. He doesn't avoid hurting them because he thinks they're weak, he simply does it because he considers it a man's duty to never do so. And him calling to Robin for help proves that he believes she is capable of handling herself in a fight. I've said it before, but if Sanji truly believed that women were weak and that this was the only reason he didn't hurt them, he would have dropped his principles the moment Kalifa started kicking his ass, but even in the face of certain death he refuses. As for the whole "wanting to peep on women" thing, well, he is a pervert, but at least I believe that unlike Absalom, he wouldn't go as far as to TOUCH the women while invisible. He'd be happy to just see. lol
As a major Sanji fan, this was very well articulated! It's a shame many people try to sleep on him as a character cause he doesn't get ALL the "zomg amzballs" moments, but one CANNOT argue that he continues to get development throughout the story, be it in small subtle character moments or off hand dialogue to major key moments that decide an arc, and that's what make Sanji such a special character; he's multifaceted and can work in basically any kind of situation. I love all the SHs, and that includes Zoro lol, but Zoro can only really work in so many type of situations before something seems out of character xD
Sanji's self-loathing and low self-worth was another reason the black Maria scene was huge for Sanji's character. Zoro didn't let Sanji give himself up for luffy because he didn't want any of the crew to die but also because Sanji had very little self-worth. It's probably a result of his initial upbringing under Germa. Before whole cake, he would've thought that it was unnecessary for anyone else to get involved just for his sake.
the moment when sanji called for robin's help felt so so good as a culmination of all of sanji's character development throughout whole cake island and beyond.
"Can money satisfy your hunger" What a great phrase to say . Baratie arc is my fav arc of all The beautiful portrayal of scenes full of iconic moments. sanji is the best character of one piece. we can see in comments there are no kids with stupid nicknames and pfp...you need to be mature enough to be a fan of sanji
I started One Piece about 2 years ago, and since Sanji introduction I knew he was something special, after Arlong park he was already my favorite, in Alabasta I genuinely started feeling bored because of Sanji absence for a big part of that arc. Whenever he appeared on screen it would be an incredible scene. Yall can tell me I’m glazing all you want, but I’m just appreciating this amazing character
Adding on to your point in 18:45, In the chapter where the other half of the crew arrived at Zou in Chapter 810, it was named Curly Hat Pirates since Sanji was leading the crew for the time being.
I never understood why people hate that Sanji asked Robin for help. It’s the characters acting in character. I understand some of the disdain for Sanji due to his gag sometimes falling flat, and coming across as creepy every now and then. But him not hitting Black Maria and asking Robin for help should never be used to slander Sanji, it’s not even embarrassing.
To me, the strangest thing about how Zoro and Sanji are written is that in the beginning of the story, Oda clearly had plans for both of them, but as the story went on, it became increasingly evident that Oda has no interest in expanding Zoro's story within the manga, either that or Oda felt it wasn't important enough to be included. The most evident of this is Tashigi. She is a character that is created solely for Zoro. There aren't many characters that are created for Zoro that doesn't involved fighting. Yet, Tashigi ended up being a nothing character. This entirely plot line about her resembling Kuina turned out to be pointless. I did have hope we get more meat of Zoro's story in Wano. I thought it was the perfect time to develop his character further, but again, we get nothing. His entire heritage is relegated to SBS. Zoro's entire deal is yet again about nothing but being stronger. That's all Oda ever developed Zoro with, and this isn't how he used to be. It's unfortunate, but I feel Zoro is one of the characters that was treated terribly by Oda post time skip. A lot of people thought Sanji was the one that got the terrible treatement, especially after what happened in Fishman Island, but it is increasingly evident that Sanji is literally the only Straw Hats outside Luffy that Oda bothered to developed post time skip.
Don’t forget that Whitebeard, the strongest man in the world and the strongest pirate crew at the time all fell apart once the cook of the crew was killed. For Oda the chef is the life blood of a pirate ship
As an aspiring cook myself and a top tier Sanji fan I love the dedication care and research you put into this video essay. Hear this honestly felt like the purest form or validation for words I couldn't mange to articulate myself in the sense of why I love Sanji's character so much and I love even more that you keep thing as netural as possible trying to raise up both Sanji and Zoro rather than a good chunk of the fanbase who try to one up them. One thing I slightly disagree with, or I guess a better phrasing is one thing I think can be added, is Zoro's role with the crew to me is more behind the scenes as well in my opinion. You can say that he's the Mr. Prince of the Crew if you will. I agree that Zoro's role outwardly is to be right next to Luffy in the biggest fights; but at the same time I think that he serves the secondary role as the enforcer of Luffy's decisions. The biggest example I can provide would be at Water 7 when Usopp chose to leave the crew. Zoro was the one who reinforced the importance of Luffy and Usopp's choices telling Chopper not to treat Usopp aft the fight - though he didn't object to Chopper leaving medicul supples for him casue he still care about his well being - threating the leave if any one tried to bring Usopp back without him apologizing first and reminding Luffy that Usopp need to apologize if he wants to rejoin the crew. Stressing the importance of Luffy needing to stand by his word and decisions if the crew is going to hold together. If I were to compare the two I'd say Sanji and Zoro are the parents of the crew in a sense. Zoro is the strict firm but fair parent the the crew knew they can always rely on to get the job done. Sanji is the fun parent they can confide in and they know will all come through for them in the 11th hour. While not show much I feel confident in saying that, behind the scenes, Zoro is the reason the crew remains together and Sanji is the reason the crew remains alive. (Again not say that both don't do this I'm just giving my prospective of what I think of their characters from behind the scenes) Though i will say this, Oda love Sanji but - and I may be paranoid here - it feels like Toei loves to make fun of Sanji.
So true Sanji is THE BEST WRITTEN CHARACTER in anime/manga world hands down. Thank you so much for making this video. And you explained it so well. Thank you so much 🙏🏻 I'm crazy one piece fan too. Sanji, Robin & Luffy are my all time favorite characters.
Same! Those are my three favs too, I love them so dearly. The Sanji hate is so dumb to me, he’s not NEARLY as bad as other perv anime characters. And some ppl calling him a PDFile is just absolutely ABSURD
The argument about oda hates Sanji is so forced. Like for real, if I'm a mangaka, I would not waste my precious time drawing 2 backstories, one whole arc for a character I hate. An author who hates a character could easily kill them off or make them less interesting. But oda literally made Sanji a complex character. The hate train on him is obviously from biased Zoro fans. Like why is it so wrong for op fans to like both of them???? Y'all are stupid.
ngl sanji is my favorite straw hat. i have cooking as a hobby, and i think his fighting style of only kicking is insanely cool, i always liked him since his introduction. i always kinda liked the way that he treats women (not the simping but the fact that he never hits or insults them) the never wasting food thing is awesome too
aside from sanji not hitting women bcos the only ones who's showed him kindness during his life in germa were his sister and mother, i'd also like to add that during the scene where zeff taught sanji to never hit a woman, it was also the first time where zeff referred to himself as sanji's parent, and i think sanji continues to uphold that chivalrous principle to this day bcos he didnt want to let his REAL father down
Sanji's kindness is always overshadowed by him simping for women, but rewatching the One Piece, he cares for guys and girls similarly First he cooks for Gin and never blamed him for bringing Don Krieg over. Never, not even once. When Zoro got so hurt, at Arlong Park Sanji kept trying to stop him from fighting. Many times Sanji comforted Usopp about feeling weak. And man, did you see how soft he is with Chopper? And also how he prevented Luffy from saying the wrong thing while fighting with Usopp. Anyway, after watching closely, I just fell for Sanji more, the details Oda put into Sanji's character.
Ppl out here insisting that Oda tortures Sanji cuz he doesn't like him rly have never written anything and it shows. Making you characters suffer means that you love them
excellent video! I always thought its sad how people who hate on Sanji based only on strength and powerscaling (usually Zoro fans) fundamentally misunderstand One Piece and dont look deeper beyond what they think is cool. (even tho Sanji very often gets too be cool, as you pointed out) There are other things just as or more important than strength. Sanji's story is more about the power of kindness and he is shown being clever and tactical... and on top of all that he's still one of the strongest physically. I dont understand how people would ever think he is weak and hated by Oda. He'll always be my favourite
Oda gave him two arcs, almost strong as zoro (with ambition being WSS) Sanji is a cook. He has the most character development in the crew since timeskip. Tbh i think SANJI is his favorite strawhat or maybe character.
THIs IS iT CHiEF I appreciate you for making this video I watched thru it all, def my favorite straw hat and I wouldn't even be surprised if it was Oda's! Great points man!
I’ve always seen each straw hat as someone with a main skill and a subordinate skill. Usually the subordinate skill of one character is the main skill of another. Just as Usopp was the subordinate ship right until Cranky came on as the main one, Sanji has a subordinate spy raft skill which is usually taken over by Robin, which makes what happens on Wano even more touching.
I mean Sanji's dream is to find the All Blue, a place where the north, south, east and west blue's all converge. how will this happen? with the destruction of the redline
About the "help me Robin-chan" scene... Yes, I definitely agree it's unironically the most courageous, noble, but also natural moment in One Piece, that only Sanji would've ever been able to pull, in addition to staying in character. (To those who say Usopp could've: nope, Usopp cares too much about his pride and self-esteem, remember?) However, I'm not quite sure this scene is enough to silence those who say that Sanji sucks... I've heard plenty people saying that was the most ridiculous moment in One Piece and mocking Sanji along with the rest of Onigashima's side characters. I guess I simply wish people were a little more observant instead of categorizing every of Sanji's actions, even the very best of them, into their negative fixed ideas. Thank you for this amazing video, Sir. The truth had to be unveiled, and I had given up trying to explain how Sanji was the best-written character to anyone in any community. There's just too many of them who don't want to listen and who want to keep reducing Sanji to a useless pervert. But thanks to your video, there's a chance I can go back into the melee. I can keep defending Sanji by sharing this video, in addition to sharing it to my fellow Sanji appreciators as well.
The idea that Oda hated Sanji has always been absurd to me. Aside from Luffy, he has the most character depth. Even getting his own arc and extended backstory. I always felt like Sanji was Oda's self insert character and Luffy was his representation of the ideal figure. I like how you talked about some of that with a lot of detail. If anything, it feels like Oda hates Zoro at least after the timeskip. When he randomly compared Ryuma to Luffy was what solidified It for me lol. He refuses to give this guy any decent character moments or meaningful developments. He also forgot how to make him cool. Who calls himself the King of Hell bro 😭
@tesytes318 it's one thing to be called the king of hell and it's another to CALL YOURSELF the king of hell. The former is way cooler. Also I don't have much care for Sanji. I'm a massive Zoro fan. He's easily my favorite character. But I was disappointed with him in Wano
@DrUpauli idk bro zoro in wano was fighting hella up there people then fought vs 2 empires then fought a 1st commander and unlock coc and got Emma which is were the king of hell comes from . Zoro ain't sanji he's not the type of character who needs that . If you're a zoro fan then you should understand that he is hella cool could easily be his whole main character. Zoro is not going be up here crying or even caring about his lineage, zoro wants to be the best , have fun with his crew, whip ass, and drink sake. I feel like a lot of people thought wano would be zoros wholecake but just like how sanji's cooking that save them and he didn't fight in wano zoro gets fight after fight plus he's the first one luffy meets . Wano had hella zoro love in it .
I just started one piece. Just met Chopper and to be honest, I love this anime so much and I hate how much I’ve held back, I’ve been spoiled a lot, but even then this anime is too good for me to care, and Sanji’s character is just too amazing of a character, his fighting his attitude, whenever he’s serious, I just want more scenes of him fighting due too how Real he is
A common thing for writers is to go "I love this character I've made. I can't wait to put them through hell and back and give them an ass-load of trauma". I'm also guilty of this
Just want to share that I love that the main showrunner for Season 2 of the One Piece Live Action, Matt Owens, have consistently said that his favorite strawhats are Sanji and Robin. His favorite is also Law. There’s a video of him tier ranking the OP characters and he puts Sanji, Robin, and Law in S tier rank (if you wonder about the other strawhats, in his opinions Luffy, Nami, Franky, Chopper, Jimbei and Zoro are A, Usopp and Brook are B). In that video, he also states that he prefers Sanji over Zoro and said Sanji is just better. Matt Owens is a writer, and from a writing perspective, it makes sense why he likes and fully understands Sanji and Robin, which makes me so excited for Season 2 (especially if it gets more seasons). As of right now, we only know of TWO writers in the OPLA writers’ room (there are about 14 writers) who are very big Sanji fans, Matt Owens (main showrunner) and Randy Troy. Not sure about the rest of the writers and who their favorite character are but the main showrunner being a Sanji fan is very significant.
Sanji is like oda drawing himself in it, so whenever you see him making fun of sanji or sanji seems to be like a clown, that's when oda making fun of himself so..
did you just see the newest sbs where zoros family tree was revealed?
Pretty much reinforced everything I said in this video about how ambivalent Oda is about Zoro’s character and development
If that was a crucial to Zoros character then I doubt Oda who has been writing this story and keeping secrets for 25 years would just show it in an sbs. Plus he left some mystery within it that he’s most likely going to use later down the line when it comes to Ryuma. Anyways this was a complete disrespect on Oda as an author.

Right, he had every right to leave his family to the demise of big mom
@@user-cn7oj3ws8q I know right
I felt bad because I know I would have been a bitch and leave them while he was mature enough to save them
And thats why I dont feel bad for tragic villains. Bad shit happens to good people all the time. They don't become blackbeard.
Sanji could be a villain, but he just couldn't.
Zeff raised him well
Sanji's inportance is actually emphasized by that one chapter/anime episode named "The Chore Boy and the Chef"
a vhapter literally titled after the two
Sanji asking for help also is great character development regarding his self-sacrificial nature.
Amazing comment
@@Ludee27 Aww thanks! Thank you also for the amazing video ^^
Oda gave this man two back stories, a dedicated arc, and literal character development (instead of just giving him raw strength) more so than the rest of the Straw Hats. How people think this means Oda hates him is insane.

good video
can you please tell me the music you used from 15:11 to 19:42
Something I really like with that black maria scene is how it works with how Sanji has such a low opinion of himself, and doesn't want to be a burden to anyone, so he's very self-sacrificing, and he's finally starting to grow out of that. When he and Zoro are faced with Kuma at Thriller Bark, Zoro sees himself as the protector of the crew, and the only other member who may rival how dangerous Luffy will be in the future. Sanji however is just willing to throw his life down because he sees himself as replaceable, he even tells Zoro "sorry, you guys will have to find another cook."
When Sanji gets the letter summoning him to Whole Cake, he underestimates how much the rest of the crew values him, and how far they're willing to go for him, that's how much he doesn't want to trouble anyone else on his behalf, he thinks it's easy to walk away (which is why Zoro acts like a bratty teenager when he hears about it). Even Luffy screaming that he can't become the pirate king without Sanji wasn't enough to fully get through to him.

Oda named Sanji’s restaurant “ Baratie “ based on a Restaurant called “ Baratei “ where Oda used to work part-time at
Oda created Reiju a nice older sister for Sanji becus Oda has an older sister
Oda shares a lot of traits with Sanji such as Smoking, Perviness and Gentleness ( Favorite foods too I guess )
It looks like Sanji is Oda himself and if so Sanji might end up with Nami as Oda married a real-life Nami
I used to ship sanji and nami but now seeing pudding back i dont think so they will end up. Sanji will probably save pudding later from bb pirates
@@rajeshwar9329 I honestly doubt Sanji would end up saving Pudding, I think it might be Big Mom since it's implied she's alive and when it comes to the Nami thing, there's a lot more evidence supporting that pairing than the Pudding one.
The problem with that last line is Oda Said no Strawhat would end up with each other
@@rajeshwar9329 the romances are weird.

You almost made me cry at the end there.
@@GoblinWrangler69
Compared to most other perv characters I wold say Sanji is a saint.
Robin understanding that Sanji called for her not to sell her out, but because he has that much trust in her, is a huge showing of how much she’s grown since then.

this is wholesome man i realy enjoyed the vid and you makes me love sanji even more.❤
7:02 i LOVED the scene where Sanji called out for Robin’s help and she came to help 🥺 Sanji understanding his value and Robin having the chance to help her family 😭😭 im finna cry all over again

@domainhami5253 yes dogs are more loyal than sanji was
Also Sanji asking Robin for help mirrors Robin's big I want to live moment. It's Sanji who had a quiet death drive always pushing himself as the sacrificial lamb because he saw it as him being useful. So it's Sanji asking Robin for help is Sanji choosing to live rather than sacrifice himself.
3:09
19:20 😂Just a super fan of Sanji, you're forgiven.
5:13 this picture is really cute and wholesome just father and son
Theeere, you've just delivered a perfect comparison of One Piece's cleverness and the One Piece community's average cleverness. I fully agree!
this is what im screaming about to fans about their powerscalling obsession.
You have managed to summarise my similar thoughts in a great and articulate way, thank you
he was going crazy with the combos on that fishman 3:0
I find it hard to believe that a writer as dedicated as Oda could put this much effort into a character he hates
Knowing how Oda writes...... Sanji's line of "....if you don't take me in, it won't be long before I'm causing more trouble than the rest of these guys put together" with Kuma could possibly be foreshadowing how powerful and important Sanji would become by the end of the series.
He already became the most dangerous by the end of Wano in terms of everything that he can do to help the crew wether that’s fighting or something else
He actually always been the guy to save the strawhat crew with his own solo missions pre time skip
I think that’s what Sanji means being very useful all around not just by fighting because Luffy will always be the top fighter
Oda dedicated a huge additional arc, 500+ episodes after Sanji’s introduction to the crew, to further exploring his backstory. He hasn’t done that for any other Straw Hat. There’s no way he dislikes this character.
I mean luffy kinda but that's a given with him being the main character.
@@xmetalgamerx Ye i mean i think oda loves all strawhats pretty much equally and definently doesn't hate any of them.

As a HUGE Sanji AND Zoro Fan, this is just the best!
7:21 this drawing of Sanji here is really interesting and here’s why
First thing I noticed is that Sanji’s outfit here pretty much looks like what you would get if you combined crocodile’s arabasta outfit with Doflamnigo’s outfit that’s what you get
And also the other thing is Sanji holding guns now this is particularly interesting because Oda actually drew Sanji with guns A lot even in the main story and the reason why is probably because Oda still loves his original concept of Sanji of him being a gun slinger instead of a kick master
I just saw the concept you said but how did you know it was Sanji's original concept?I thought Oda never mentioned that. And some other people said it was Ussopp's original concept.I'm confused now.
@@dararama3633
Both of them were supposed to have guns at some point maybe not at the same time but both Sanji and usopp at some point were supposed to be gun slingers
And the reason why I knew it was Sanji’s original concept is because gun slinger Sanji the concept that I’m talking about specifically has Sanji with black hair and normal eyebrows he pretty much looked like Luffy or something so I think Sanji’s look that we know today came later and along with changing his hair to blonde etc Oda scrapped the gun slinger thing
And maybe the reason Oda ended up not giving guns to neither Sanji or usopp is that Oda promised his grandmother to not make a violent manga so that’s why no one in the crew has guns and characters rarely die
Duuude love the video!!
Also what’s that song that plays at 15:10, it’s from Yu Gi Oh isn’t it? I’ve been looking for it!
Zeff ate his own leg to keep Sanji fed, and then took him in. Of course Sanji would rather die than kick a woman
12:50 FAX! All Mosshead has to do is remind Luffy to focus and people be saying "ah! Zoro is such a goated character..." like bro...
I saw many Sanji fans also thought Usopp was a well-written character.

@@Skip-t8b thx
Thank you so much for this video. You articulated everything about Sanji perfectly 👏🏽
Same here Sanji is my favorite character because I see myself in him. Take note Sanji has 2 back stories, I think he's the only one in the crew.
Sick video bro
Sanji's character development isn't over yet, we still have that memory Pudding removed.
My rebuttal to that statement. “I’ll be your dog”.Tongue wag* Bounce* Bounce* “Woof. Woof.”…
(Again not say that both don't do this I'm just giving my prospective of what I think of their characters from behind the scenes)
Though i will say this, Oda love Sanji but - and I may be paranoid here - it feels like Toei loves to make fun of Sanji.
So true Sanji is THE BEST WRITTEN CHARACTER in anime/manga world hands down. Thank you so much for making this video. And you explained it so well. Thank you so much 🙏🏻
I'm crazy one piece fan too.
Y'all are stupid.
ngl sanji is my favorite straw hat.
i have cooking as a hobby, and i think his fighting style of only kicking is insanely cool, i always liked him since his introduction.
i always kinda liked the way that he treats women (not the simping but the fact that he never hits or insults them) the never wasting food thing is awesome too
Ngl Sanji's entire story in WCI is probably one of the only times I've teared up watching One Piece.
As the president of the Sanji fanbase, I want to thank you for spitting so much truth.!!!
i really hope people understand sanji's character as much as you do ! Good video bro 🌊🔥
Sanji’s the one who got the most screen time after luffy (literally).
oda doesn't hate sanji, toei hates sanji
aside from sanji not hitting women bcos the only ones who's showed him kindness during his life in germa were his sister and mother, i'd also like to add that during the scene where zeff taught sanji to never hit a woman, it was also the first time where zeff referred to himself as sanji's parent, and i think sanji continues to uphold that chivalrous principle to this day bcos he didnt want to let his REAL father down
3:45 I like how thier called yoshikage and that's the question they ask💀
Sanji's kindness is always overshadowed by him simping for women, but rewatching the One Piece, he cares for guys and girls similarly
First he cooks for Gin and never blamed him for bringing Don Krieg over.
Making you characters suffer means that you love them
sanji is the reason i enjoy my job as a chef at a local restaurant
excellent video!
2:48 Ah yes, Oda's signature "Detail to Attention"
I’ve always seen each straw hat as someone with a main skill and a subordinate skill. Usually the subordinate skill of one character is the main skill of another. Just as Usopp was the subordinate ship right until Cranky came on as the main one, Sanji has a subordinate spy raft skill which is usually taken over by Robin, which makes what happens on Wano even more touching.
Franky (my iPhone autocorrects straw hat names)
I mean Sanji's dream is to find the All Blue, a place where the north, south, east and west blue's all converge. how will this happen? with the destruction of the redline
The glaze is going crazy rn
Then click off.
About the "help me Robin-chan" scene... Yes, I definitely agree it's unironically the most courageous, noble, but also natural moment in One Piece, that only Sanji would've ever been able to pull, in addition to staying in character. (To those who say Usopp could've: nope, Usopp cares too much about his pride and self-esteem, remember?)
However, I'm not quite sure this scene is enough to silence those who say that Sanji sucks...
A lot of people and figures are called / named the king of hell . But you can like Sanji without hating on Zoro like damn bro
@@tesytes318 Zoro stans are shitting on Sanji and every other character in the story. Not saying the WHOLE Zoro fandom, but a lot of them.

its slander, nobody actually thinks oda hate sanji genuinely

Every Op fan needs to see this
Just want to share that I love that the main showrunner for Season 2 of the One Piece Live Action, Matt Owens, have consistently said that his favorite strawhats are Sanji and Robin.
Oda doesn't hate sanji, i don't know what sanji got nerfed or not.
