    I cant even imagine the suffering these tough marines had to endure I am nothing compared to them .

    .... This history is especially daunting when you consider they achieved it without Kevlar protection, knee pads, eye protection ... and most of the time, not even gloves.

    I'd also say the Marines were better than the Japaneses soldiers. Have better equipment and logistics is part of being a better military unit. In almost every battle where the Japanese didn't have a very long time to dig in and make elaborate defenses, the Marines would kill far more of the enemy than they'd lose themselves.
    You can't underestimate the disadvantage of attacking heavily fortified and well thought out defensive systems. They were all great fighters and very brave (both sides).

      Eugene Sledge was a marine. He wrote With The Old Breed: at Peleliu and Okinawa.
