I got M1 pro 16 inch for school. I will say battery is beast. Performance is good. One drawback I would say is types of compatability for software. I'm an electrical engineering student and found that certain applications like pspice won't work on Mac; it will only run on windows. So overall really good device but compatability can be frustrating at times

I am an Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty member and agree that apps like pspice run better in Windows. As such, I use Parallels on my Mac with Windows 11. I just got the M2 Air. Portability is important to me. Parallels is lightning fast on Apple silicon. You can pick up the student discount for Parallels. The M1 Air is a great computer and awesome value if you need portability. The discounted 14” M1 Pro MacBook (at $1599 at Bestbuy) is also a great value, but heavier. I had an M1 MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD and ran out of storage with Windows present plus the extra engineering apps. The 512GB is a better idea. Though you can use an external SSD, that defeats the purpose of portability. Parallels and Windows and the engineering apps need to be on the internal drive. The 8GB / 512GB with 10 GPUs is a OK compromise when running Parallels on an M2 Air. The faster RAM handles Swap very well, when needed. (It uses 1.5GB Swap with Parallels and mail and a browser with 10 tabs open, plus a few background apps). The 16GB M2 Air upgrade is a better choice, but you also need to do 512GB to avoid slower RAM and limited storage. That bumps the price into the 14” M1 Pro range. Bottom line - an M1 Air with 512GB / 16GB is a great value. Great video Harris and all the best for college Harris and Fernando! Subscribed!

I really couldn’t care less about the slower ssd speeds, I come from an age of Hdds that have 100mb read and 100mb write which is astronomical slower than the fuss being made about “1700 read and write vs 2500 read and write.” as well as the fact that I’m not gonna be transferring 100gb of files everyday, if so I’d be considering the mbp anyway and another thing is that in my country the difference between mba and mbp, heck a maxed out mba would only be close to that mbp and the mild upgrades I got on my mba is not even touching the mbp and I was not gonna spend that much money on a laptop with the, yes faster M1 Pro but like not that much faster or not faster to the point where it’s worth the extra price, so the mba was a no brained for me as I didn’t need to save much money and go for m1 mba but I also wasn’t gonna spend way over my budget for the mbp.

I think if you're not going M2 Air for it's lightness with 16GB RAM, then just jump to a 10 Core M1 Pro (and forget the M1 air because that was when Apple were testing their new silicon chips and that will be fast outdated by the end of 2022/23.)

To be honest, I bought the M2 Air just to admire the new design and flex on my friends. Also, the M2 Air is a little bit quicker than my TV at home which is ridiculous. I personally like the speakers on this new machine due to its base sound. Those are way better than the speakers on windows laptop. Before that I bought the M2 Air, my school gave me a Dell which is so slow, heavy and big. It has that butterfly keyboard with the old diving board trackpad. It's just a pain let alone that I prefer MacOS.

Now that the MB Pro has recently been discounted❗
Would you have considered the discounted MBPro instead of the MBA M2 (16/512) if you had to decide today❓ (let's call it $250 more for the Pro for a whole lot more of a computer)
(or does the extra size and weight make it that much less enjoyable to use on a daily basis)
I ask as I am trying to decide between the two
I don't need the extra power of the Pro - but every other feature is appealing (except the size & weight).

As Conor McGregor says, "power beats speed", if my laptop was as slow as a sloth 🦥 and I was pulling my hair out of my head, then I would go for a 14" M1 PRO (but the one with the most cores) as it actually runs more efficiently than the M1 MAX and add 16GBs of RAM.
