2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6: Highly Competitive, Highly Desirable | MotorWeek Road Test

- While the IONIQ name has adorned various electrified Hyundais since 2017, it was this IONIQ 5 utility, which arrived last year, that officially launched IONIQ as the brand’s all-electric sub-brand. So, logically they followed that up with another SUV… Ah, not so fast, Hyundai’s next all-electric entry is actually a true 4-door sedan- the IONIQ 6!

I appreciate Hyundai/Kia are continuing to make sedans and coupes. Some of do not need or want an SUV and it’s nice to have more options.
Agreed. Imho, SUV = Stupid Useless Vehicle. The only off road they see is when Buffy and Miff accidentally hit the curb at their local Starbucks
@@Budicles realize that’s your opinion, but I like being able to put my kids, luggage and my one medium and one large dog in our vehicle with room to spare, which we do every weekend as well as pull a tandem axle trailer and boat. I’m not anti-sedan, but I need something with more room and don’t want a minivan. So, not useless for me and my family.
I would appreciate if they stopped making vehicles PERIOD
It's safer/more connected driving when you're lower to the ground

One of the most beautiful new cars I’ve seen. Porsche meets Saab and a completely unique front end.
agreed
The front end, in particular, stands out as a completely unique and striking feature! 👏
I’ve seen a few in person, and these look stunning. Hyundai and Kia are killing it with their designs!
agreed
The attention to detail and innovative styling have made their recent models stand out in the automotive industry
This looks like a concept car from 2003 and I love it so much.
I drove an Ioniq 6 AWD and I was actually quite impressed with how it drove. Felt very European. Taut body control, potent acceleration, and very hushed at high speed. Only downsides are the tapered rear causing a smallish trunk. Rapid charging can’t be beat. Hyundai needs to do some work on their infotainment software, but the car itself is phenomenal.
While the tapered rear may have impacted trunk space, it's good to know that the car's performance and driving dynamics more than make up for it!
I am mesmerized by this design, it does give me the vibes of high tech, minimalist, light 2040's in 2023.
Well done Hyundai.
Looks like 80s trash
I want this. Hyundai and Kia once again pushing boundaries. This is coming from a Genesis owner.
Ford and Chevy claims people don't want cars. Yet Hyundai keep making them.
I love the Infiniti J30 rear...A throw back to the 90's! :D
I had to look that up to remember.
I reseble it more to the 911.
I had a J30! Love that they are being that styling back
Yup , it’s also reminds of the J30 too.
I feel like I’m surrounded by crazy people
@@buhkid8364 Never think the world is sane, not the majority anyway, so nothing will surprise you :)
Always a pleasure watching MotorWeek !
I took one for a test drive and loved it. But head room in the back seat is tight with that sloping roof.
Just like the ev6…hyundai/kia seems obsessed with those sloping roofs and absolutely terrible amber drl’s.
I have a Hyundai and I love it. Will likely buy a Hyundai EV in the future.
I don't think I've ever seen John this excited about a car. Now I'm excited.
Got one! Thank you John. 👍
I absolutely love how these look, saab-esque
Interesting how I was seeing that very same design. Curious, this is.
The ass end reminds me of a Porsche
Nice looking car, a little more efficient than our Ioniq 5 but I would rather have the extra cargo space. I've never come close to running of of range anyway the loss of a few miles vs the ioniq 6 isn't much difference in real world driving.
Ionic is the best ev out
One of the first sedan EV's I'd consider if I had that type of money.
What is going on with that styling? 😢🤢🤢🤢
This is one of those car that you either love or hate.
I'm just kind of okay with it.
Agreed
Looks can be deadly, especially in regards to how sophisticated Hyundai's Ioniq 6 looks and was made. The Ioniq 6 may end up taking on not only the BMW i4, Tesla Model 3, Polestar P2, and even the Volkswagen ID7, but also potential midsize EV sedans such as the Honda Accord Type E, Toyota Camry bZ, Nissan Altima EV, Kia EV7, Skoda Superb iV, Peugeot e-508, Alfa Romeo Giulia EV, Ford Mustang Mach-S, Chevrolet Impala EV, Audi A4 e-tron, BMW i3 (Neue Klasse not the old i3 hatch nor the Chinese i3), and Mercedes EQC (renamed C-Class EV if the EQ moniker gets dropped) in the near future.
I love the design and craftsmanship of IONIQ 6. Hyundai and Kia are pushing boundaries, and the efficiency on the highway is impressive. It's a strong contender among EVs,.
What the jimminy is that background music?
I appreciate this video because I was really considering buying those until now.
@@michaeljordan8694 Hope you don’t live anywhere it snows
Is the "exciting" background music really necessary?
Seen my first one today, looks very sharp.
Does it come in hybrid option. . Engine and battery
Being a Tesla model 3 owner this sedan has really caught my eye! It will possibly be my next EV before I leave this earth.
Are you old af? I don’t want you to die😩
@@JohnLee-db9zt I’m 71, maybe I’ve got 10 more years left!
Yep, nobody leaves this planet alive
@@ronaldboykin9755 10??? You’ve got at least another 29 good years in you my man!
Seriously great car. Can't wait to test drive one.
I hope they make an N version of this with a big whale tail style wing.
It seems a hatch would have worked better than a trunk. But, idk.🤷🏻
I love how it looks
Why no track run??
I’m missing the acceleration test.
I remember a very short amount of time ago I thought Hyundais were ugly and crappy economy cars. They have really really turned out some good, solid stuff of late
Their current entry level econoboxes are still pretty awful.
Great entry for shoppers, but this really does prove how coupe SUVs are just the sedans that the market has so stupidly shifted away from, just with more comprises.
The 5 is one sexy box!
The Ioniq 6 looks dated already. It looks like a concept car that was conceived in the 60s, 70s or the 80s and what we would be driving now.
And let me guess Tesla looks up to date😂😂😂😂
Charging is impressive!
Baby got range. This car looks rather interesting like a love child of the first generation Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS, and I like the dashboard's design. I'd either want one of these or a Tesla sedan.
The back looks like an infinity J30
You gotta love it how John sounds so excited about something that Infiniti had the J30 with this 🙄🙄🙄
John is an entertainer
@@BeingMe23 Hey ,he is awesome guy,I've watched for alot of yrs 😁😁😁👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️
THIS is the one to get if you care about highway range and are comparing 5 and 6. 27% more efficient on the highway (AWD vs AWD)
And a 10K battery replacement! Krazy!
Actually Hyundai has a 10yr/100,000 mile warranty on the battery. Not to mention in 10+ years you will accumulate $20,000 plus in vehicle savings. Savings to the wallet and the environment. Savings on fuel, oil, exhaust components, emissions, transmission fluid changes, spark plugs, turbo chargers, fuel injectors, fuel system, fuel tank, radiators, transaxel fluid changes, brakes and much more.
The battery will probably last longer than the time you own the car.
Hmm i'll have to see one in person, on first impression it's an odd looking thing.
I want to see what Honda has to offer for its EV line up. Acura too.
Honda is coming out with a suv called prologue and Acura will have the zdx. No doubt the Acura will be overpriced as they are now. Oh, and they’ll both be based off the gm ultium platform which is an automatic deal breaker for me. I wouldn’t but anything general motors makes. Absolute trash!
Citroen-esque
Big boy getting in that back seat…..head room looks limited. Great vehicle though! Infiniti J30 vibes, too bad the production car isn’t as crisp as the show version.
Is this the love child of a 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera?
That looks like a Citroën from the late 90s with batteries
At least these cars can’t have engine oil leaks
Lol
I miss the oil on the garage concrete floor, the pan and the irregular clean of the concrete.
Ahh the good old days! the induction noise of the carb, the burned oil smell, the crackle of the exhaust, the sideways yaw and roll of the car while in idlle and the sound of roar when you give it some gas.
You ruined it EV you ruined it! now, it's like driving a washing machine!!!
They can leak coolant.
@@kensmechanicalaffair Or suddenly combust and be hard to put out while releasing lots of pollutants meanwhile burning someone.
Well the MG4 EV does leak oil. Check online
I thought the Ioniq 5 was meh, but this looks pretty legit
$15k more than a base Camry with less trunk space. What a steal. 🤦🏻♂️
The plastic silver accents are an unfortunate distraction from an otherwise very nice interior.
Hyundai came from the BACK.... just remember
I can appreciate and enjoy the recent styling of Hyundais, but I wouldn’t buy one, even with your money🏖️
I believe the Tesla 3 starts at like $34K
After the government's tax credit. You have to make sure you get all of the tax credit to get the Model 3 price down to $34K. Not sure everyone is able to do that. But the Model 3 also has more cargo space, better software, NACS charging network (which is cheaper to use, densely populated and highly reliable), and available full-self-driving (still in beta). John seems happy enough to sit in what he thinks is a nicer interior. How about you REVIEW a Tesla some time, John? Qualify your mudballs with some actual journalism?
No Way I Prefer The IONIC 5 Better
Pixel Perfect
junk, send it back to SK
No idea why Hyundai forces you to take the larger wheels in better trims which hack range for little benefit.
Tesla model 3 rwd is less than $30k at the Tesla store floor when you factor in the $7500 federal tax credit.
Ioniq 6 taking massive L's
There are Hyundai dealers all over the place where you can walk into a showroom and buy one. Seriously, where do you buy a Tesla? Where is there a Tesla dealer? Where can you test drive one. Everyone that I know bought them used
Looks like Porsche and eqe has a baby lol
Looks good, but not touching any nontesla electric cars. The fast charging infrastructure, buying without dealers, and overall package make this Ioniq 6 NOT WORTH IT. Drop the price to 32k. Otherwise it’s the same price as a model y for half the car. Does it even have a heat pump?
This video with the presenter feels like a decade old!
It's the modern 1992,2023 Ioniq 6
Nice hyundai ev...
Looks like a 90s Ford Taurus!
18인치 휠을 사용해야 최상의 연비를 구현할수 잇다.612 km
The rear looks like the old Infiniti J30 lol
Beautiful car. I'd much rather have this over a Telsa Model 3.
I'd much rather spell "tesla" the right way
@@Model3P "tesla" should be capitalized. If you're going to be petty and correct someone's typo, make sure you get it right yourself. 😆
Yeah if you want garbage
@@allentoyokawa9068 Teslas are infamous for shitty build quality and replacing parts multiple times, but ok.
I too would prefer this over a taslE Model 3 too,
looks way better and easier to spell hnydauI IQNIC 6.
You could hear the pain in John's voice when he squeezed out that kidney stone - admitting the Tesla Model 3 is mainstream. It's only been America's top-selling premium sedan for well over a year. Motorweek hasn't reviewed a Model 3 since 2018... five years ago!!! He has no clue what he is talking about if he is comparing this 2023 Hyundai to a 2018 Tesla. Motorweek should get with the times and review cars that people are buying. Including the world's best-selling vehicle of any type... the Model Y which they haven't reviewed since 2020
2006?
Looks like a smaller Mercedes cls.
that climate control looks strait out of 1995
Why they copied the Audi A7 tho. SMH
Just wondering…… in June 23 there were approximately 280,000,000 cars registered in the US, and around 2,000,000 were EVs. This is about 1 EV for every 140 gas powered cars. So only 0.7% cars on the road are EVs. In many parts of the US an EV is a oddity and rarely seen. Why is there so much time and information given about EVs when they are still many decades from being even slightly mainstream?
Motor week has gone down to the dumps. No longer showing acceleration clips with audio or braking clips. I want to hear these vehicles! Whoever approved the changes needs to be fired. You’ve now become obsolete in the world of REAL car reviews. I imagine you’re now being paid to “smooth over” your reviews. 🤷🏼♂️😔
Was just thinking that. Shot after shot of the car hardly moving....
"0-60 test" is an optional checkbox that the client has to check when purchasing a commercial on Motorweek. If they didn't check the box and pay the additional fee, they don't get a 0-60 test. Unlike actual journalists who own their own V-Box and can test+report 0-60 anywhere, any time.
Real car reviews mention how the vehicle compares with what is already on the market, including (especially) the market leaders. Motorweek is not in that business... these are paid commercials
90s Porsche design
No comment on the A/C. I find that they don’t do dwell in desert weather. Hope they fix this issue with maybe a solar pan ale that runs the A/C. That way the A/C doesn’t drain the battery
The evs are prob gonna save the car.
Bloated, 4-door Audi TT from the early to mid-2000's?
Une vraie berline avec un aileron arrière façon Porsche 911.
In some angles it looks great.... in others uhh a little weird. Interior looks cheap and bland, I appreciate a sedan but still bland EV
I am used to Hyundai/Kia ripping off other people’s designs. They should go back to that formula.
No thanks
Hard to look at.
Sagging, melting rear end styling failed back in the nineties with reason. Poor space utilization. The Infinity J30 and Ford Taurus look like this car's parents.
Way better looking than a Tesla.Sticker was 49k for the SEL.Dealers first offer to me was 40k. Huge backseat. This could be the car that turns the tide into the EV market.
Msrp is only $47,700 on the sel but if you were offered it for $40k you should’ve jumped on it. What was making them take so much off a brand new model?
@@guttagutta420 EV’s not practical for me. Was impressed with the styling. The car sold to another customer for the same price.
Side note. Went on Autotrader and a bunch in the 39k range.? They were in California . Not sure how sales work out there.
That looks like it should have Honda k20 vtec under the hood & because it doesn't it's bad
Did the design team go on vacation? It's not a good looking car. Which is very unusual for kia /hyundai designs.
That's what I.thought
yeah but it fits in with the whole EV nonsense. They are trying too hard to make the design look quirky and forward looking. I like the GV70 electrified where they just took a great design ICE and repackaged it.
I thought the same until I saw one in person. Video or pictures doesn't do it justice.
Unusual? Them making terrible looking cars is there forte
Highly competitive? Highly desirable??? I what world. I know you get paid to say things like that, but we all know these things are JUNk
stick to the Japanese cars because you know nothing about any other cars. Your bias is sickening
Average American Moment
It's better than any of the sh it Toyota is trying to sell
@@MartinGalway Allen is the biggest homer there is. He trashes every car unless it's Japanese. He knows nothing about automobiles.
We normalize the day but we’re actually in the transition to the future people. I see a new electric car everyday. We’re about to rollout a new era of technology and it’s happening now. Transitions in economies, currency, health care even the workforce is changing.

It’s funny how everyone has forgotten how Hyundai had a recall a few years ago that had their cars instantaneously combustible from a mechanical problem. I would never touch a Hyundai/Kia
So did gm. So did honda. What’s your point?
Yeah, pay $60k for a Korean junk that will depreciate 50% the moment the paperwork is signed.
Why does every EV look like a POS?
I have a 5 and think this 6 is very UGLY. Obviously Hyundai marketing is stacking this comment section with over the top fake shill comments.
Looks horrible
It looks like a cockroach
Haha. Didn't look at it that way. But now that you mention it, it does look like a roach or maybe a beetle? A pretty one, of course!
This thing is no good lmao
Looks like an ugly offspring of an 2000s VW Beetle and a 2010s Audi A8. Both iconic designs are bastardized and I believe this will age horribly.
