As a mechanic, my top tips are as follows for the home gamer, take your time...organize the bolts, get access to service data as it's even more critical on late model vehicles. The biggest tip though is if you need help ASK for it...having an extra set of hands/eyes on the project doesn't hurt at all.
Best tip I've had - dropping a gearbox is generally the best time to change...
-Clutch
-Flywheel
-Rear Main(!)
-Driveshaft/Axle seals
-Gearbox input shaft seals
THANK YOU for watching. I will tell ya, if you dont follow on IG/Tiktok you may want to. there are some really funny parts of this video that didn't make it to the Final Cut hahha #PAULINSTALL
Mikes List: 1. Load car in trailer. 2. Head for North Carolina. 3. Call Charles to let him know Im on my way. 4. Stop by SnapOn truck and buy charles gifts so that he helps when I get there...
Charles I'm surprised you don't poke a Phillips screwdriver through the cardboard before the bolt , makes life a lot easier to punch the bolt through
been following for a while. amazing level of content, amuzing and proffesional. very informative and could (probably will) spark a generation of well know how who could actully make a change. 10/10 bravo. THANK YOU.
My tip - When reinstalling transmission or gearbox, use two threaded temporary rods (same thread size as mounting bolts) at locations 10 to 2, or 9 to 3. This makes alignment much easier when sliding transmission back into position. Install other bolts and replace temporary threaded rods with mounting bolts.
If the transmission's out, do as much work with other stuff as you can while in there. Plus always have a transmission jack if you're working on the floor. It's a lifesaver...I also love your cardboard trick.
There's nothing 'tricky' about good planning and organization. That cardboard template and taking pictures with my phone saved me HOURS of time and mental anguish when I changed the clutch in my Mk1 Jetta a couple of years ago. I credit Charles for those invaluable tips! Cheers to you good sir!
BTW - always prepared for the "While I'm In There" equation. It saves time and money in the long run. I replaced all the seals, bushings, and engine motor/trans mounts when the trans was out. I also degreased and cleaned it. It needed it after 40 years of use. As Charles said; It definitely went back in better than it was before. Be proud of your work!
I just finished swapping my transmission in my Mk6 yesterday and this popped up in my feed today 😭😂
My top tip is verify that the new (or replacement) transmission works!!! I swapped a transmission with one that I ordered from a salvage yard, the guys that pulled it bent the rod that the linkage attached to, and I didn’t realize it until I installed the thing and it wouldn’t shift🙄
So I got pretty good at replacing the thing because I did it twice
I've done a few transmission swaps in my days, but what I took from this video was "We need to supercharge it" . . .
Wise words to live by Charles, wise words.
Best tip is the cardboard bolt holder
one of my tips for ANY job that involves lots of parts to be removed is : if you have enough space, arrange the parts in the order of disassembly, top to bottom, left to right, so when you're ready to put everything back together, you just follow the order you disassembled everything in. + If you have to swap parts, bolts or else, put that in its correct place in where the old one sits.
7:05 "these have definitely been used before, technically one time use. We'll..... probably put these back in." 🤣🤣
One tip, as a DIY'r myself, I will give to other DIY'rs is before you tackle a job, do your research on the job you're about to do. There is a lot of information out there on not only how to work on your vehicle, but also on how to Dx an issue. I think people would be surprised at what they can accomplish on their vehicles if they just took some time to become familiar with how to do certain things. I always research a job before I tackle it. This way I become confident, but most importantly, have all the required tools, fluids, etc. I need before doing a job. This doesn't mean there won't be hiccups in the way, that I won't get stumped, I won't break things in the process, but at least I am prepared before tackling a job so that when things go leftward, I have an idea on how to remedy it.
Rear main is a must do for me if I am in there. Plus it gives you a chance to inspect the clutch
While you chased the bolt holes in the trans, I like to clean the bolts too! The thread wizzard is a great tool, a lot easier than using a bench grinder with a wire wheel. Agree on being careful with the ‘while you’re in there’ syndrome, but I’ve never regretted changing mounts, throw out bearings, slave cylinders when internal, input shaft seals and axle seals while the transmission is out. And a LSD from Quaife or whomever makes one for your application is a game changer while the transmission is out. Take your time and don’t rush, else you might have to do it twice!
For me, if it's a wear item and under $10, 100%. Higher prices... well, gotta think on it.
I’m curious who all got here because of a change in occupation. I worked as a general maintenance shop for 5 years previously and about 9 months ago I moved to a shop that specializes working on VW TDI cars. Beforehand I occasionally watched humblemechanic just watching the basic auto tech RUclipss. Tool hauls, mods, other cool stuff. But since I started working on VW as a main part of my job I find myself watching him more and more, and watching videos of his I otherwise wouldn’t have clicked on.
If I'm doing any transmission work, I like to pull the engine and trans together out the front of the car. I do this so I don't have to mess with the subframe and alignment. It also works better for me because I don't have a transmission jack but I do have an engine hoist.
More terrific content from our favorite Humble Mechanic! Love the Cardboard!
Well this video was reassuring. I did these things a few months ago when I manual swapped a B5 avant
Im actually getting ready to replace the transmission on 98 Legacy wagon with a 99 outback wagon rear diff and trans. so this video helped a lot on just getting stuff ready! first time ever removing 2trans
Wow that car reminds me of my golf 4 V5 2000 model that I had. It had same red colour. So few were imported that's even the technician at the VW dealerships could not believe that it existed. The nice thing was the Jettas with the same engine were common, that made it easier to get parts. I had to change the clutch myself with a friend some years later. That car made me develop love for the VW car brand.
Well, I just replaced the Transmission in my Golf IV GTI 😁
It was whining in the first three gears really bad, the throw out bearing was sounding really bad, the clutch was really hard, etc.
I am glad it went fine and is now driving amazing again! 😂
As someone that uses the Bolster tray, I love it. I have the basic and the tray 🤓
Thanks Charles. Trans needs to come out my R56 cooper s. Pretty sure it's a broken fork. I've never pulled a trans before & I appreciate how clear you are
Its really awesome to watch mechanics like yourself and Smeedia (subaru), that specialize on car brands I would generally want to stay away from, make me feel more than comfortable to attempt modifying or repairing them.......I wont but I feel more comfortable about it haha! Hope you plan on doing a video on a tearing down that transmission too!
used your cardboard trick back in 2020 ! works so well when there is several months between removal and install
Great video and full of useful tips like the cardboard bolt holder, love the way you show us your mistakes, I’ve had a lot of issues with them metal bell housing gaskets, they are a lot harder to install when you’re on jack stands and you’re lifting the gearbox with a engine crane… always seems to get mangled up while trying to locate the input spline into the clutch plate, also forgotten to install one once after spending a long time getting the gearbox back on only to have to remove it and start again! Glad I’m not the only one who has forgotten one 😂
Great video.... Lots of hacks out there. You can always tell when a hacker was working on a car. Happens a lot more than people think.
I actually sold my old MK3 GTI VR6 turbo that had a 02A with the Quiafe 6-Speed synchromesh gear kit & LSD in it because I was too lazy to swap transmissions. I also didn't have a lift available to me at the time. I regret it to this day....
Are you Charles?
Always look forward to the Sunday drops, you’re the man Charles
Im currently using your blend door and Heater Core Video to help me complete the job thank you 🙏
NICE! So good getting heat back, or AC HA!
@@beefwellington2298 I’m not looking forward to that on my Jetta!
@@BashOnHobbiesI did one for a friend 3 months ago ( mk4 tdi wagon) . I swore I would never do another one but my daily (00 Golf tdi) just started leaking so I'm about to do another one🤬🤬🤬.
@ wanna come be moral support on a third. Just point and laugh as I do it wrong.
@@BashOnHobbies only way to do it is work slow unfortunately. Make sure all the wiring harness goes back in as it should. I will say the area around the steering column is a bit tricky. Don't force anything !
You got this ! Nothing will ever phase you after you tackle this job 🦾🦾🦾
On my mk3 I just pull the front end off, and the engine out along with the transmission, it’s easier to work standing up vs underneath the car because I’m getting old and have no lift 😂 And then im not fighting trying to muscle the transmission back up from
Under the car. I also like to clean up the engine and bay while it’s all apart
Clean as you go. Like that battery tray and engine cover 😆 also helps with organizing
Replaced a gearbox a few months ago on the driveway for the first time, I wish this video had existed beforehand!
Only thing that I don't think you mentioned was to replace axle seals, on my Celica the FSM says they should be replaced any time the driveshaft is removed, I didn't and one started to leak shortly after, and it would definitely have been easier to do that job on the new trans before it was in the car!
Ha. Forgot the dust shield on mine too. I feel like I’ve watched you do the same in the past too lol.
One thing I like to do with just general repairs on an older Nissan, my 1994 300zx TT, is to replace some of those old bolts that over the years get kind of gunky, rusty or ugly looking. I usually get decent stainless ones. The OEM ones have the Phillips heads on them, but really you should NOT be using a Phillips head driver on them, they just get torn to pieces and then rust easily. It made a huge difference when I replaced all the grommets and bolts for the timing cover since mine were all gross. For bolts that are just holding on brackets and stuff like that, there is no reason to spend a bunch of money on hardware, just the generic ones are OK for that, but makes a huge difference imo. Just make sure you get the same size of bolt, like a shoulder bolt style, length and thread pitch.
One thing tht will also help is, before starting on a job like this, always look up common faults and change the parts if ur ganna remove it anyway.. save a bunch of time..
Also order parts u think u will or will not need.. 😂😂😂 tht way if it messes up, u got it... alwys works for me..
Every time i do a job i never donde i always take pictures of how it was before i started working on it and i always put the bolts of the things that i took out together so i know they belong there
Mmmm that's the stuff, that hit the spot! Another helping of VR6/MK4 R32 please and thank you!
"and while we're in there."
Famous last words. 😁
Super helpful…keep up the excellent work!
Excellent video Charles! Before i knew to be organized, my brothers ans I would just set the bolts on the floor and then accidentally kick then all over the place. 😅
my tip to struggle less on the way up is to lube the transmission input shaft to help it slide esier also drain the fluid as i makes the transmissin lighter to hold up and you can change the fluid when you are alredy there and doing work and last leave the transmission in neutral so yout can manuver the transaxle so it makes it in to the splince alot more smooth
The cardboard trick. Organising bolts and clips on the part they belong to. And sort everything in the order it was taken of. These are the major frustrations i have when I forget to do them. Oh! And “I’m just gonna" is the root of all chaos and ouches.
I have worked quite a bit on my BMW's, but have yet to make an attempt on the transmission - My current E61 5-series from 2009, automatic - feels like the clutch is going bad, but the idea of changing it myself... Doesn't sound fun :')
Having spare time and a carlift sure doesn't hurt I suppose!
As Charles mentioned one time use bolts can really come back to bite you.
I didn’t replace the upper gearbox mount bolts on my old mk4 who knows how many times they were re used before I owned it but I did it one last time and two snapped luckily I managed to ratchet strap my gearbox and limp my car 5 miles home but the bolts snapped in such a way it was near impossible to remove them so I got another box and eventually got them out and sold that box
Always interesting videos Charles 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧
On FWD cars especially rusty ones split the inner cv instead of removing the top hub bolts or ball joint to remove the driveshaft, saves so much time messing around with rusty siezed bolts.
I’ve stripped to bare shell and rebuilt 3 x Lupo GTI’s over the past couple mths (very long story) and did the ‘Johnny super tech throw them in a bucket’. Absolute hell, lost 80% of the bolts 😂🤦🏻♂️
Best tip, have a buddy to help line it up when installing it!
100%
I usually remove the drive flanges on the 02A & 02J transmission to aid in clearance when removing and reinstalling the gearbox. This is not really an issue on MK4 chassis cars, because the engine & trans mounts aren't tied to the subframe.
Change the main input shaft seal in the gearbox if did not done in the last 100k km, or you install a used but not renewed unit. If you have cluch down, the same tip for the back seal of the crankshaft.
Good video, thanks for sharing 👍.
As an armchair automotive technician, my top tip for changing a transmission is to just take you car to Charles, the humble mechanic, then sit back, crack a cold one, and watch him do the work on RUclips.
Hahahhaha this is THE tip
Have the same whine on my diesel 02j. In 4th and 5th but extremely loud in 5th.
that same thing happen to my 034 motorsport mounts on my mk4 r32 lol went with BFI instead
Leaving us on a supercharger cliffhanger...i like it😎
My personal tip for replacing a transmission is to not need to. Make sure your changing the fluid more regularly than the manufacturer recommends. ESPECIALLY if your driving the car hard or towing. Most manufacturers are minimizing cost of ownership by mandating longer fluid intervals or even "lifetime" fluid intervals. Lifetime fluid is like saying a deep sea diver has a lifetime Oxygen supply. It's technically true.
i am becoming the fan of the engine+subframe+transmission out work over the piece by piece fixing.. i is much more convenient and do it all at once work
My biggest and best tip for transmission removal: Make sure you remove the bolts before attempting to remove the transmission. Kinda hard without that.
Well, now I want an R32 x)
Good video have you done any videos on a DSG gearbox? How to change the oil?
I am sure he has
ruclips.net/video/UjxAQsePR7Q/видео.htmlsi=9k-9zyAYe01RqbHq
Shop dap does
If I was doing this replacement, I think I'd find an 02M and just swap gear stacks into the faulty one. That way you can visually verify syncros, gears and bearings, and shift forks for damage or wear. I think it was cost significantly less than 1800. You could probably toss in a LSD while you're in there if the 1800 buy in wasn't a concern
If this was any other trans it would be a few hundred bucks. But you have to pay the severe r32 tax
Thank you so much!! Quality video Full of knowledge 🤝👍 You got a new sub👍
thank you
my biggest problem converting from 02J to 02Q was the concentric slave cylinder fails upon bleeding. went through 4 replacements and fluid comes from the bell housing. I gave up and threw the 5 speed in and good to go. just can’t get a working clutch on the 02Q
If it's a Chrysler check with the vin to make sure it's the right trans
Great video! Why wasn't the speedo working at the end?
The vss was bad on the new trans
Transmission install tip: take it to The Humble Mechanic!
I have a question, where do you find the specs to replace the one time use bolts? Thx a lot
Charles any tips or tricks on removing a CCTA Tiguan driver side axle that is stuck in the trans? pry bar tricks is not working, i work at a volkswagen dealer so if any special tools that you may know that will help would be greatly appreciated
Charles what box Is your new 1.
uk we got drp 6 speeds on bora( jetta) 2.8v6 4motion
thebox is supposedly an aluminium magnesium mix too
also a drw diesel gearset for your turbo r32 (longest set)
Please can you do a video on how to delete the SAI and redundant Vacuum lines and so forth as getting pipes and parts are really getting hard these days.
the main reason I haven't is because I don't want it to feel over complicated. Basically a tune will solve the issue of it not working.
Plus deleting that is off-road use only. ;)
If I were to "off road use only" this one, id just remove the pump, the lines too and from the pump, and plug the small vac line at the combo valve.
@@HumbleMechanic I'm in South Africa haha, everything is for off road use only.
I literally just imported new second hand ones from PA and been on Vortex but the issue is the good old days of Photobucket makes life with the older cars so much more difficult.
Been struggling with this car since 2009 nut and bolt redoing small bits every year.
If I may ask and you have time, can you point me into the direction of where I can have a look on how to remove as much clutter from the engine bay. I know this is a big ask.
do you have any videos on doing a wheel alignment on a mk7-7.5 ? diy
I don't. Mostly because I feel it's worth the $ to have a proper alignment by a good shop.
@@HumbleMechanic me too i was just curious i just put H&R springs on and wanted to see if i could do anything while waiting to get into a shop
Great tutorial, and insider tips. One question. Do you always do heavy work alone ? Or is there a hidden helper somewhere ? Thanks, Rick….. 🌴
Ray can lend a hand if he’s not working the camera. Otherwise it’s me
Besides the Deep Blue Pearl R32, how many MK4 R32 do you own. Like your videos, it's very informative owned an MK4 R32 hopping to pick one up or a 24v VR6 GTI. I'm not a fan of the turbo four banger.
I would love to put a 6 speed in my 5 speed manual car :)
16:48 Does 02M have a speedsensor like 02A/J etc. and did you connect it?
Shibby 🤙mk4 r32 😮
Is it easier to leave the bevel box on or off when you do one of these transmission swaps?
I’ve never had good luck doing it that way. Some swear by it
@6:15 I don't know why I busted out laughing as this sentence started.
I've seen some things in my time. 😅
The one time use hardware thing gets me every time. I understand it, but then I also don't understand it.
I learned car mechanicking from one of these guys who could just take an engine out and apart, throw all the bolts in a coffee can, not label anything, and put things back together the right way. Of course, this was obsolete American and British iron (small block Chevy, Jaguar, MG, Triumph), which is a lot less complicated than a modern VW.
What’s your thoughts on ravenol oils and lubricants?
Have you ever seen a Pressure Plate straight up destroy itself in a manual mk4 1.8t? My 02 jetta had the clutch slave cyl go out, leaking fluid. Replaced it, worked fine, then suddenly just never worked. Sold it to a friend for like 500 bucks... he pulled it apart, and the pressure place had 5 teeth just broken off sitting in the trans...
I need to replace the transmission on my mk1 audi tt quattro, im assuming it's relatively the same as the R32?
1:47 stick your magnet on these clips and it wont ping off when it unclips!
Still missing the haldex LSD install ;)
Tip. Lay on your back and use your feet as well as your hands when installing. 👍
Nerd voice was the best 😂
Safety! Transmissions are really heavy when they set on top of your fingers. Or face.
How does guibo come out os "jubo"?
Hahah I have no idea. But I enjoy saying it
Paul Proof 😯
I put a new alternator in my 09 Jetta city. And my battery light is still on but goes off after 2000 rpm?
Pro tip: If you think it can stay and won't be in the way then THAT will be the part where it all gets stuck on. Make it easy for yourself and give yourself a much space as possible.
make sure to take the flex plate bolts out before pulling the transmission and noticing the torque converter stayed on the engine…💀 ask me how i know 😂
What if you have a clunk sounds shifting from gear 3-4?
Centering bushing on your center drive shaft is damaged... unfortunately I"m not aware of a way that you can get just that bushing... vw would sell you the whole drive shaft though :)
Yea it sadly is common when people caveman remove the end of the prop shaft. You can get just the bushing but they are like $100.
DEFINITELY want to see that transmission teardown and LSD install...
Remember vw uses triple square the idiot who worked on your car before you used a torx and messed up all the b bolts
Marking the axle is not necesary Charles, if you would buy a new one how are you going to fit that? 😊
Not for me in this case. But it’s a good tip for someone only removing and installed the same trans
