  • Social media is one factor on a long list that may be contributing to a mental health crisis among teens. While rates of anxiety and depression in this age group continue to rise, New York Times reporter Matt Richtel has spent more than a year interviewing American adolescents and their families. Richtel talked to Michel Martin about his series, "The Inner Pandemic," and the latest installment just out this week which focuses on the impact of the crisis on teens of color.

Young people aren't provided with opportunities to feel useful. When families lived on the land, children helped with any chores they could handle. One room school houses worked by giving more advanced students responsibility to help their younger schoolmates along, helping to cement their knowledge, and building empathy

The problem is not with the children but with adults. We are choosing to create a world that is inhospitable to life. The vulnerable experience the brunt of those choices regardless of age or species. Rather than spending our time, energy, and resources on personal enrichment; we can choose to spend it on healing and supporting our world. As we grow in our capacity to affect our 🌏, the consequences of our choices matter more. The vulnerable are our guides, not our problems.

Old ones need to get to a level to know they are outdated, that we need up to date employees in the Capital. Even watching people going to jail, for doing whatever just to keep Alive. We need to write a statement and get the signatures needed to start a position that starts making the difference, we keep doing it over and over. The elite have took this Country, mislead, threw out the bills and laws that could helped to keep all in the plan. There is one way

I have qualms about the guest's seeming dismissal of social media as a significant factor in this crisis given the many articles written by mental health professionals that have indicted social media for the very problems that the speaker cited. No social media should not bear all the burden, but I felt that he was a bit too forgiving of the negative impacts of immersion in the world of "influencers," trolls, and likes and dislikes.

My kids had plenty of sleep! Sleep when they were sick no er for them! They chose schoolwork over tv until homework was done. Excelled in sports & had great friends. I told them how you can't get enough of needed sleep. My daughter, 30, is smart at work & smart financially. Is strong & independent! My son is a Firefighter/RN/EMT & is now in training to become a Paramedic! Just turned 27:) give kids structure & understanding, teach patience & forgiveness, kindness & laughter, empathy & sorrow, truth & trust. Parents are a childs 1st teacher. Good food. Best kids.
my kids love to make my eyes roll.
I saw such laziness during lockdown. Blame blame blame...yes the children suffered, because of their PARENTS!

laren: Not to mention economic changes that make it much harder to establish the kinds of lives that society has come to expect them to attain.
But all of this is magnified by social media, which constantly pushes these problems into their faces while providing no solutions.
And it has problems it causes in and of themselves, too. The greatest being more social isolation.
Heck, it's having that effect on a lot of louder people, too.

What he says at 3:47 and beyond about the neurological mismatch is exactly what I'm seeing in my youngest Gen Z kids, who are post pubescent but aren't old enough to get out into the world for themselves. Through what they're picking up in the information overload, they are far more burdened than they can constructively act on. I have had one attending therapy, but it hasn't been that productive. The next step is to change therapists and begin attending together. But I say all this because I agree this is a big problem for this generation of kids.

There's also a fear of stigma among some parents (primarily "lower economic classes"), which can prevent them from seeking help. If those kids can't get help from their parents, they become that much more hopeless - a dangerous place to be.

With respect to readers of colour, I wonder if young Americans of colour are experiencing more depression and suicidal ideation because they are far more aware--through the internet and twenty four hour cable television--of the terrible reach of systemic racism, and just how wildly unfair and blatantly rigged the system--socially, economically, politically, judicially, etc.--is toward people of colour. (This is not meant to let the UK and Canada off the hook.) This generation has seen so many "viewers cautioned" videos of men of colour being killed by American police, has watched accounts of the murderous destruction of prosperous Black American communities, has learned of the staggering number of lynchings and has seen violent racists parading through American streets. And most recently this generation has witnessed state governors show far more concern about the feelings of overly sensitive White children and their raucous parents than about the need for Black children--indeed, all American children--to learn of the history of slavery in the states. Surely anyone reasonable, informed person would find this depressing, but most especially so if it directly impacted their hopes, dreams--and their very lives.
As one of my favourite RUclips content creators says, "It's just a thought."
    Cheers

A psychotherapist spends 45-60 minutes a week with an adolescent. Someone who prescribes is usually overwhelmed by treating too many patients and spends 15-20 minutes/month or less with their patients. There'no mechanism via health insurance to pay therapists to communicate w/ prescribers. Good therapists get a signed release from parents to do so anyway.

@@kesart8378 In Ohio, my kids have had years where their classes started at 7:45 am or earlier, which means they were catching the bus or getting a ride sometimes before 7 am. They had to get up at 6 am. In the winter months, it's dark until around 7:20. All of that is too early. I think it's scheduled like that for economic reasons, because they need to run the buses multiple times, with some schools in the district starting earlier than others and the same buses used for both.

Reading a lot of these comments, and all the opinions are touching every viewpoint. It seems to me the answer lies in simplifying ones own life. There are parts of america who do not care about the internet and comparing themselves to others. Yes, and they are modern communities with active lifestyles. As an avid walker myself i notice more and more kids are out at the park where I exercise WITHOUT a smartphone or any other device and they are having a blast! I live in a mixed race community and most of us interact with each other. We also have organized sports with supportive parents watching their kids and rooting them on. Most kids are flexible if you give them a chance to be kids and give them a little room to make mistakes. No, my community is not well off either in fact it is a lower class community with a great park system and a small town feel.

I’m from Texas(and just started my junior year of college). Tbh a lot of kids my age group(18-21) and other teens look younger than some years back(I’m not sure but I think because of less smoking and exposure to certain things, plus also better nutrition and health approaches), yes with the exception of some athletes(the athletes always look bigger/stronger and able to grow facial hair easily because of exercise(and higher testosterone….an example is the pitcher Roman kimball on South Carolina who recently recovered from tommy john surgery), but sadly we’re suffering because of both external pressures and mental health(basically the need to succeed at a certain age and frequent comparisons with those who have achieved a lot)

Face the facts, the youth in our Country have no real hope that this Country will be able to give them the right to a American dream. For years I watch kids fight to get h8gh grades they are keeping GPA, A are the intended goal. With the fight to keep in school most need to hold jobs, then there is college wow if they get help for cost, can they eat keep a bed to get good rest. I've seen children going to school from shelters, sleeping in cars with mother and father holding low paying jobs, part time hours only, well they don't need to have a health plan for part time ect. If a two parent home (car) hold jobs and they can't find a place they can afford. How and where is the possible American Dream, I know it's possible but most of us get no breaks. I knew nothing about credit and why tax re s help us how without credit u can't get jobs, we are on the way.out on top of know I NG what's going on with the coming treats on this world they know who is hold the end for us its worse than being attacked but to be told it never happened, that's our Country with the capital criminals. They never fix anything just keep us out of reach of breaking down the walls

When you get home you are tired and you have chores around the house to do before the next day and you do not have time to laugh and play with your children, children need that. There is a time for work and a time for play. America is all about too much work . A four day work week for the general population would be good. Our children are suffering. Corporations can survive without working people to death. Plus, we should help other country’s where we can, but we can’t be expected to safe the world with our tax money, our people need that tax money here at home.
