I'm now 42. My 20 year old son told me about this "new" genre of music..... called chillwave. I listened.....not bad actually.... then I said " this is "chillwave" when I was a lad.....and played this. He has listened to it 20 times in 3 days. You can teach young dogs "new" tricks.
Awesome comment, man. I'm 23 and chill-wave was huge when I was in high school (and still is). I'm a big fan of IDM and ambient, as well as chill-wave! Nice. You and your boy are both choice!
What an artist. Britain really does produce some talent. Big Shout from the US. I'm also loving other various UK electronica based acts like Faithless, Orbital, Underworld, Aphex Twin, Sqaurepusher, Unkle, Goldie, Stereo MC's, Chemical Brothers, The Streets, The Prodigy, Roni Size, Massive Attack, The Bug, Allflaws
I had just turned 16 when Little Fluffy Clouds was released, we would lie in the park in summer with a ghetto blaster and listen to tunes on LSD. Little Fluffy Clouds was one of the most beautiful tunes for that, lying and looking up at the sky while tripping balls. 34 years later I finally got to see it played live at the Ozric Tentacles and Orb joint gig in Leeds a few weeks back, absolutely blew my mind on mushrooms, one of the best nights of my life. I'll never get tired of listening to The Orb and hope I don't have to wait another 34 years.
What a superb timeless Album! :D You can DANCE to it, read to it, screw to it, or just kick back and/or smoke pot to it, and enjoy the deep aural tapestry of blood-pulse rhythm and esoteric samples....And getting something new out of it with each listen :D (this era of the group particularly, followed up by the INCREDIBLE 45 minute long single "The Blue Room" and the 1992 masterpiece *U.F.Orb* ) Bottom Line - You GOTTA love *The Orb*

I'm 27 and this is one of my favorite albums of all time. I've always been fascinated by space/sci fi stuff. My favorite part is the start of Supernova at the End of the Universe when the spaceship leaves Earth and that masterfully crafted spacey ambient vibe kicks in after the first two more dance oriented tracks. "We've got a beautiful view of the Earth here... and it's absolutely fantastic" It feels like you're physically inside that spaceship. That's what ambient music is about, being able to take you somewhere with just sound effects and samples. I've never done any psychedelic drugs but if I ever will, this is the music I'd play.
Hands down my favorite part is the thrusters too. The sound is so powerful, achieving thrust of 7 miles per second to reach earth's escape velocity. I love sci-fi and immediately felt at home in the blackhole's singularity of Insterstellar.
I saw the orb at the fridge in Brixton back in the day. They played this entire set and more. It was an all nighter. Two mates, red and yellow ying yangs followed up by yellow burgers. Best night of my life...
My copy of this on CD has a cardboard sleeve - it's absolutely shagged. Heard Little Fluffy Clouds for the first time on a Sunday morning, about 6am, on some comedown radio show. It must have been late 1990 - I can remember where I was. Funny...I can't remember anything else about 1990. Smiley face indeed.
I agree! and very happy to have heard it not too long after its release. I caught them near when Toxygene was released and happy to have browsed their back catalog...
Yeah, I remember this, Primal Scream’s “screamadelica” and My Bloody Valentine’s “Loveless” all coming out about the same time. It was a very trippy, drugged-out time in my life, and the music reflected this.
Everybody loves this album, and deservedly so, but U.F.Orb is also just as good, if not better. I believe it topped the mainstream album chart on release. Strange how a classic #1 album has been forgotten
Crushing at times , but you're glad you were there aren't you . I was in San Francisco , surrounded by gentle English and Irish people , tripping my head off
Still listening still not bored and in wonder at the beautiful collection of sounds put together in this masterpiece of an album I want the whole album at my funeral! esp @ 15.55
Last track..... Mind blowing......can lace tracks with this......enjoy this trip. I have this CD and case, I bought for one song not knowing the experience I was in for.
I was looking for Little Fluffy Clouds as a single, the record store kept telling me they could not get me a copy, after 3 weeks visiting them, the owner said he had the album in stock now, I took a chance and bought the double cd, the best money I ever spent on my music. I still play it today.
Been listening to this occasionally for decades since it came out. Bought a CD copy at least once. It is just as good dead sober now as it was as in my (ahem) college years. Good music to listen to while studying for exams :)
Bought this on vinyl when it first came out. Shifted my consciousness permanently, completely blown away, I had never heard music like it in all my life. The impact was instant, the world changed with the release of this album. The same effect as Gong's Free Floating Anarchy, a similar album in many ways.
Hillage's presence is ALWAYS worth noting! The fact that the Orb remixed & sampled Pink Floyd and went on to collaborate with David Gilmour on Metallic Spheres is a logical extension of their forays into psychedelic/prog and Hillage more than fits the bill in "this" Orb.
I just picked up as a record (what those of us old enough to remember when record albums were just records not vinyl) from Amazon and I must say if you have a decent stereo BUY THIS on record format!! the sound is AMAZING!!!
Quite possibly the greatest album of all time, there is so much emotion in this and I have no idea why it touches me so much but it does, I did see them play the whole of this on tour the first time around and have fond memories of a night in Brixton, but it's more than that, they really seem to have put together a collection of sounds of your life from the womb to well you know where, it's beautiful beyond my English capabilities.

I think the samples from the beginning of that track are from Flash Gordon circa 1981
