Aussie mum here. When I was younger, I just completely took him for granted, we heard his great songs nearly every day on the radio. Now that I’m ancient, I see the greatness of his amazing voice and connection with his audiences. He is special, and also a very good bloke!!

💯 Exactly what I was thinking, then read your comment! lol Born in the 80"s and grew up listening to him almost every day but never realised how good he really is! And even the word good is an understatement! This man can do any genre with ease!

Yikes - that's me. Known John's songs since Sadie and always knew I like him, but like you, I'm now ancient and I feel so sad that I never went to see him. He is one of the greats in the world not just Australia.

    • @Schiltzenberger
      @Schiltzenberger 23 дня назад +9

Yep, same here. I was into metal music where it's either falsetto or mouth full of gravel type vocals. So never appreciated some of our mainstream music and singers. Plus, we did hear him pretty much every single day.
INXS and Crowded House had some success overseas, but for some reason John Farnham never really cracked it. So I actually enjoy watching people react to him for the first time.

In his book (and I highly recommend the audiobook version) he talks about his desire to sing again but also the challenges associated with that. Unfortunately there is a possibility that we will never hear him perform live again, and the few brief moments that he sings during the recording of the audiobook may be the last time we get the privilege of hearing him sing.
Having said that I wouldn’t be angry if he chose to retire from public life. He has entertained generations of Australians for decades and deserves to enjoy his retirement.

This is my first time listening to Mr. Farnham. When I looked him up it said he was born on July 1 1949 and became a pop idol from 1967 through 1979. Of course, John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote the song. :D Classic indeed. Look at the size of the audience. *Wow.*

John also was lead singer with Little River Band for a few years after his Pop Idol times. After this he released his album Whispering Jack, which is still the highest selling album in Australia by an Australian artist to this day. His career as a contemporary rock/pop artist never faulted after this. He is much loved in Australia, where he is known as "the Voice".

The song that powered his comeback in 1986 after his original star had faded: ruclips.net/video/8voNPJmp1ww/видео.html still an anthem in our country nearly 40 years later. Thanks for listening to John - he does indeed have an amazing voice, as we in Australia have known for over 50 years, but much of the rest of the world missed out on. Lovely to see more people discovering him now!
If you'd like to listen to more, I'd suggest 'You're the Voice' next, also with the MSO: ruclips.net/video/8voNPJmp1ww/видео.html This is his most famous song, and was the one that revived his career when released in 1986. There is far more of his to discover after that as well, it's a very deep rabbit hole, but worth exploring. Just always, always listen to live versions with John - his vocals are always perfection, and his stage presence and charisma are so much a part of why he is loved so much.

It is hard to imagine that John had to fight tooth and nail to be recognised as a performer only a few short years before this wonderful concert. He couldn't shuck his old 60s popstar "Sadie, the Cleaning Lady" image he struggled with through the 70s and early 80s. He went out on a limb and recorded You're The Voice, his friend and lifelong manager (until he died from covid in 2022) Glenn Wheatley was forced to release it under his own label because none of the big labels would touch John. He's a national treasure who has been unwell over the past few years. I hope you listen to much more of his work, there are so many songs every bit as good.

If this was your first introduction to our Aussie legend, John Farnham then get ready for the long and wonderful journey down the rabbit hole, with over 50 years of performing there is so much incredible music from John and co out there to discover. John is the greatest and most versatile male vocalist of all time, he can sing anything, any genre, including opera. With huge power, near limitless vocal range, amazing performance style(especially with his mic and mic stand tricks), crowd participation, breath technique, mic technique, he’s got everything. This entire concert was epic and you could react to every song and not be disappointed, I’ve listened to John for most of my life and never seen or heard him do an even average performance. I could recommend songs for days, and there’s a lot of them but if you are going to react to John anything is bound to be amazing but always choose a live performance where possible, especially back then, no auto tune, no tricks, just John and always nails it. And this was John’s arrangement of the Beatles classic “help” and the best arrangement.

Thank you for this reaction - oh what a find ! I opened RUclips and first video to come up was yours. I saw this concert when the tour came to my home city, Brisbane, and it was brilliant from start to finish. Help was one of four encores, if memory serves, so he'd been singing a couple of hours at this point. I was seated side-on to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) and they were having the time of their lives! One muso who was with the MSO at the time recently said this was the best gig of his career. Sorta confirms my theory that if you scratch the surface of a Classical musician you'll find a headbanger trying to get out. I was on an endorphin high for days afterwards!
John has an extraordinary back catalogue spanning 5 decades and almost every genre you could think of. From this one concert with the MSO there's a plethora of show stoppers, but the next one has to be You're the Voice, as it was the song that catapulted him into fame. In fact here in Oz he is known as The Voice. I'll attach the link below.
I also recommend from the same concert, the high octane Playing To Win, which John co-wrote, and his cover of ACDC's Long Way to the Top, in which quite frankly the orchestra completely stole the show!😂

Something to always watch for with John is his mic control, at times he has the mic a couple of feet away from his mouth but still clear as a bell, he picked up the nickname "Whispering Jack" from studio technicians due to his habit of blowing out the mics unless he reduced his volume significantly or they muffled the microphone by draping cloth over it...

Oh honey, just keep going down that rabbit hole. Our John is the GOAT. Look for his recording of Black Dog. It was just a mike/sound check and the sound recordist happened to press record. He only ever performed it to an audience once I believe. Most performers would be like “this was the performance of a lifetime” John and his crew were like “yep, good sound check”

You just came up in my RUclips, and I subscribed as you won me over for two reasons. The way you explained your channel is exactly how I think. The music of yesteryear has heart and soul. The resurrection of John on RUclips this past year has been phenomenal. It's been great watching younger ones appreciate older music.
John never let's you down. He always gives his heart to every song. A true showman. He's respected by every artist who comes in contact with him. Every individual or band member or artist that appears on stage with him or has ever shared the stage, love him. He respects everyone's talent. His backup singer's have been with him for decades. That in itself speaks volumes. He is very funny character, shows humility, and treats any fan on the street like a friend. You couldn't meet a more genuine and lovable man. That's why he's our treasure. Always was, always will be. I say that because I've followed him since he began. Plus, a lot of us girls had a crush on him growing up lol 😅
I know he's brilliant at everything he sings, but as a hint, do yourself a favour and watch....It's a Long Way to the Top ( If you wanna Rock 'n Roll ) with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
I guarantee you will never see another performance by anyone anywhere in which every single person on that stage, John, guest musicians, backup singer's all bring the house down and the Orchestra does things you would never expect . Look for the Orchestra's conductor. His face says it all.😁 This performance will knock your socks off as far as entertainment goes😂 Anyhow you, too, I think will become a fan once you hear all his genre's and why appropriately he's named " The Voice ". Like many here has said, always listen to John, live !

I've heard John Lennon heard Farnsey's version (it came out early in the year Lennon died) and said that's how he wanted to do it, but the managers insisted on the fast, peppy, poppy version the Beatles did. Don't know if it's true, but it makes a good story.

Yes this is the late 80's. And the Motorola Brick came out in 1983. Well at least it did in Australia.
John Farnham is a living legend here in Aus.. The most loved and respected artist ever. He has had number one hits in 6 decades. So appeals to multiple generations. He was a teen pop idol i the late 60's to mid 70's and King of Pop in Aus for 5 years in a row. His popularity waned in the late 70's and early 80's.....then, after a 4 years stint as the lead singer of The Little River Band, he came back with a vengence in the late 80's with his multi platinum album, Whispering Jack, followed by many more multi platinum albums and number one songs over the next 3 decades. He is still massively respected today, and considered by most Aussies, especicially other musicians, as the greatest vocalist on the planet..he has one of those voices that just got better and better as he aged. Even into his late 60's he still sang note perfect, in the same key and with the same power as he did in his 30's and 40's. He is now in his 70's and if it wasn't for his recent health issues with mouth cancer, he would still be singing like that.
Not only a brilliant singer, performer and musician but also a wonderful humanitarian. ❤❤

John always acknowledges those on stage with him. He lifts others up. She John live at least 3 times. Stunned silence is an appropriate reaction.
The other thing to note is not only is the audience singing along, they are singing along to John's version of Help rather than the timing/tempo of the Beatles original release.

You're supposed to get lost in the experience when it's a by an Absolute Legend like John. Known here in Australia as THE VOICE. ( As distinct from his massive hit: "You're The Voice. > A Tribute performance of this sung just tonight - by Robbie Williams at the Sydney Harbour New Years Eve Concert. )
🎉 Happy New Year to you too!
John is entirely self-taught & sang across just about every genre, including musical theatre. He's also a fantastic song writer. ( Have a listen to his 'Burn For You' he wrote for his lovely wife; Jilly.)
The very first record I ever bought, aged 12, was his 'One Is The Loneliest No.' Adored him then & ever since. A genuinely nice down to earth guy - without a shred of star ego.
John had a look at expanding his profile overseas, but his family were here and I heard the record labels wanted to pigeon hole him as a kind of bland blond Aussie David Cassidy style - which he is far too diverse for.
Many have commented on his wonderful timbre, power and stage presence, and speculated that if he'd been classically trained, he might have become our finest Tenor.
I'm glad he followed his own track.
John was still singing just as perfectly & powerfully into his early , his last performance only a couple of years back at a Bushfire Recovery Benefit Concert.
Sadly, just after this, he was diagnosed with invasive mouth cancer and underwent multiple surgeries and treatments. He won't be singing again, but he's given us a large back catalogue and many beautiful memories. Enjoy exploring more of John's inspirational vocals.
And Hello to 3025 from Tasmania. 😊

The original by The Beatles was a pop song, which came out in the mid 60's just as John(Johnny) Farnham was starting his career. John's version is more a rock ballad which he first performed in the early 70's, but adding the orchestra alongside his band took it to another level. A great Australian artist, a true gentleman and consummate entertainer; who is the only Australian artist to have a number-one record album or single in five consecutive decades, Cliff Richard is the only other artist to achieve this feat(internationally).
