The Replacements - set two - live at the 7th Street Entry (1981)

  • During the first week of September 1981, Twin/Tone took the mobile recording unit and rented a bunch of video gear and recorded 15 bands live (five nights) at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis... This video is from the show on September 5th.
The band had released "Sorry Ma..." earlier in the year and were already working on future projects. These songs are presented as they were recorded live... in set order and very much with the tuning that troubled the night. The Replacements were the middle band of three (Husker Du closed the show) and played two 25 minute sets.

I just watched the TPT documentary on MInnesota Hardcore - and discovered my old buddy - the photo was 1984 the doc said - so he was 13 years old - as the "2nd wave." I played the Entry when I was 16 years old. I saw hardcore bands there and the main room. Yes Husker Du was graffiti on the old West high school in Uptown. Even for us youngsters - the vibe was in the air.

Interesting observation. IMO this is probably the best of all RUclips / Matts offerings. Super-tight...everyone spot-on. As years progressed, Paul’s songwriting developed a bit of Beatles-like tune-full clever sweetness that when combined with Bob’s more “hardcore” sensibility created tension..and...some really great output that was probably better than they themselves appreciated.

I love all of the 'Mats stuff, but there was definitely something missing after Bob and Chris left.

Bob especially added something special. I was amazed they even tried to carry on without him. The story goes that when they went to Memphis to record demos for ‘Pleased To Meet Me’, the plan was to break up right there in the studio, but I guess they had a change of heart. PTMM is a good album, but pretty far removed from what came before. At that point it turned into the Paul show. Once Chris was out that should have been the end, but the end didn’t take long to come after that. Something like six months.

The Twin Tone stuff is all that matters. Best live footage I've seen of them.

@@Brewzerr Paul wrote the songs, not Bob. Why wouldn't they carry on without him, when the driving creative force was still in the band?

Why carry on? Bob was the heart, who gives a shit who wrote the songs. They were mediocre after Bob left

Bob's lead gtr could be a little louder in the mix. take some of the volume and some of the distortion from Paul.

Sounds great despite the tuning. Reading the book about them now. Didn’t realize the extent of their partying. Fantastic band!

Is this available in the original format anywhere? I don't see why it needed to have the top and bottom of the image cut off. Otherwise this rules.
