I never had any issue when it comes to solving blanks. But, i guess, everyone has some kind of weakness. What you can do is that try to look for some hints, like, if a blank is followed by an article, then Noun is the answer; try to look for a verb if there is an adverb to the immediate left or immediate right of a blank. Also, if a blank is followed by any preposition then Gerund is the one that you should be searching for. Most importantly, knowing Synonyms is the best you can do because the answer will be,somewhere, near about.
