That brings back some memories. I travelled the 'misery line' for several years in the 90s. Mainly to Basildon, but also London Fenchurch Street (both from Southend).

it took till 1998 when the first ever sliding door trains arrived on the line
they were called the Class 317's - nothing new about them they were surplus trains from the West Anglia line

Started commuting to Fenchurch Street from Basildon in 1991. Couldn’t imagine the old slam door trains in today’s safety conscious world - those passengers who used to leap out as the train pulled in so they didn’t have to walk from the front of the train back to the exit.

How things have changed! This line is run by C2C and is one of the best.

Yep C2C is class but has definitely also gone a bit downhill in the last 2 years

C2c are appalling nowadays and rude customer service

Agreed! It's incredible how it's now in the top five of best train operators in the UK. The stuff they do to make things right when it all goes wrong is astonishing compared to other uk operators
